    Effects of Therapy Dogs on Anxiety in Children Participating in Sexual Abuse Forensic Interviews at Children\u27s Advocacy Center

    This study investigated the effect of therapy dogs on physiological and psychological measures of anxiety before and after a forensic interview in children who may have been sexually abused. A convenience sample consisted of 37 children ages 6 to 12 years who presented at a children’s advocacy center for sexual abuse forensic interviews. Twenty children had a therapy dog present during their time at the Center and 17 did not. Researchers measured systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) using a Zelwa WS-TS Touch Screen Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor. State- anxiety was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children. All measurements were taken before and after participation in a forensic interview. Results indicate no significant differences in state-anxiety and physiological arousal in children who had the dog present in the waiting room compared to the children in the dog absent condition

    Digital correlation detector for low-cost Omega navigation

    Techniques to lower the cost of using the Omega global navigation network with phase-locked loops (PLL) were developed. The technique that was accepted as being "optimal" is called the memory-aided phase-locked loop (MAPLL) since it allows operation on all eight Omega time slots with one PLL through the implementation of a random access memory. The receiver front-end and the signals that it transmits to the PLL were first described. A brief statistical analysis of these signals was then made to allow a rough comparison between the front-end presented in this work and a commercially available front-end to be made. The hardware and theory of application of the MAPLL were described, ending with an analysis of data taken with the MAPLL. Some conclusions and recommendations were also given

    Stability of the Submillimeter Brightness of the Atmosphere Above Mauna Kea, Chajnantor and the South Pole

    The summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the area near Cerro Chajnantor in Chile, and the South Pole are sites of large millimeter or submillimeter wavelength telescopes. We have placed 860 GHz sky brightness monitors at all three sites and present a comparative study of the measured submillimeter brightness due to atmospheric thermal emission.     The Prominence of Affect in Creativity: Expanding the Conception of Creativity in Mathematical Problem Solving

    Constructs such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration have been accepted as integral components of creativity. In this chapter, the authors discuss affect (Leder GC, Pehkonen E, Törner G (eds), Beliefs: a hidden variable in mathematics education? Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, 2002; McLeod DB, J Res Math Educ 25:637–647, 1994; McLeod DB, Adams VM, Affect and mathematical problem solving: a new perspective. Springer, New York, 1989) as it relates to the production of creative outcomes in mathematical problem solving episodes. The saliency of affect in creativity cannot be underestimated, as problem solvers require an appropriate state of mind in order to be maximally productive in creative endeavors. Attention is invested in commonly accepted sub-constructs of affect such as anxiety, aspiration(s), attitude, interest, and locus of control, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and value (Anderson LW, Bourke SF, Assessing affective characteristics in the schools. Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Mahwah, 2000). A new sub-construct of creativity that is germane and instrumental to the production of creative outcomes is called iconoclasm and it is discussed in the context of mathematical problem solving episodes

    The Intramolecular Loss of Fluorescence by Lysine Derivatized with Naphthalenedialdehyde

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://www.opticsinfobase.org/as/abstract.cfm?URI=as-44-5-858.Derivatization of primary amines such as amino acids and peptides with naphthalenedialdehyde (NDA) in the presence of cyanide ion yields cyanobenzo[f]-isoindole (CBI) adducts that are highly fluorescent. However, the fluorescence is seriously quenched with amines that possess more than one primary amine site, as is the case with lysine. Although it was found that the adsorption of CBI2-lysine on a solid substrate restored the fluorescence, the reason for the solution quenching, with respect to results for mono-derivatized amines, was investigated. The experiments to probe the quenching were based on the assumption that the mechanism responsible for quenching involved a charge-transfer (CT) excited state. Thus, it was found that the solvent properties of viscosity and polarity affected the lifetime and quantum yield of fluorescence in a manner consistent with the proposed mechanism

    We present a detailed study of the magnetic properties of sol-gel prepared nickel oxide nanoparticles of different sizes. We report various measurements such as frequency, field and temperature dependence of ac susceptibility, temperature and field dependence of dc magnetization and time decay of thermoremanent magnetization.     SDW and FISDW transition of (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4 at high magnetic fields

    The magnetic field dependence of the SDW transition in (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4 for various anion cooling rates has been measured, with the field up to 27T parallel to the lowest conductivity direction cc^{\ast}. For quenched (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4, the SDW transition temperature TSDWT_{\rm {SDW}} increases from 4.5K in zero field up to 8.4K at 27T. A quadratic behavior is observed below 18T, followed by a saturation behavior. These results are consistent with the prediction of the mean-field theory. From these behaviors, TSDWT_{\rm {SDW}} is estimated as TSDW0T_{\rm {SDW_0}}=13.5K for the perfect nesting case. This indicates that the SDW phase in quenched (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4, where TSDWT_{\rm {SDW}} is less than 6K, is strongly suppressed by the two-dimensionality of the system. In the intermediate cooled state in which the SDW phase does not appear in zero field, the transition temperature for the field-induced SDW shows a quadratic behavior above 12T and there is no saturation behavior even at 27T, in contrast to the FISDW phase in the relaxed state. This behavior can probably be attributed to the difference of the dimerized gap due to anion ordering.Comment: 4pages,5figures(EPS), accepted for publication in PR

    Magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out along the highly conducting a axis in the FISDW phase of hydrogened and deuterated (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4 for various cooling rates through the anion ordering temperature. With increasing the cooling rate, a) the high field phase boundary βHI\beta_{\rm {HI}}, observed at 27 T in hydrogened samples for slowly cooled, is shifted towards a lower field, b) the last semimetallic SDW phase below βHI\beta_{\rm {HI}} is suppressed, and c) the FISDW insulating phase above βHI\beta_{\rm {HI}} is enhanced in both salts. The cooling rate dependence of the FISDW transition and of βHI\beta_{\rm {HI}} in both salts can be explained by taking into account the peculiar SDW nesting vector stabilized by the dimerized gap due to anion ordering.Comment: 6pages,6figures(EPS), accepted for publication in PR
