Pre-corneal tear film thickness in humans measured with a novel technique.
PurposeThe purpose of this work was to gather preliminary data in normals and dry eye subjects, using a new, non-invasive imaging platform to measure the thickness of pre-corneal tear film.MethodsHuman subjects were screened for dry eye and classified as dry or normal. Tear film thickness over the inferior paracentral cornea was measured using laser illumination and a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera. A previously developed mathematical model was used to calculate the thickness of the tear film by applying the principle of spatial auto-correlation function (ACF).ResultsMean tear film thickness values (±SD) were 3.05 Όm (0.20) and 2.48 Όm (0.32) on the initial visit for normals (n=18) and dry eye subjects (n=22), respectively, and were significantly different (p<0.001, 2-sample t-test). Repeatability was good between visit 1 and 2 for normals (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]=0.935) and dry eye subjects (ICC=0.950). Tear film thickness increased above baseline for the dry eye subjects following viscous drop instillation and remained significantly elevated for up to approximately 32 min (n=20; p<0.05 until 32 min; general linear mixed model and Dunnett's tests).ConclusionsThis technique for imaging the ocular surface appears to provide tear thickness values in agreement with other non-invasive methods. Moreover, the technique can differentiate between normal and dry eye patient types
Advances in molecular pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Although the past two decades have produced exciting discoveries in the genetics and pathology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progress in developing an effective therapy remains slow. This review summarizes the critical discoveries and outlines the advances in disease characterization, diagnosis, imaging, and biomarkers, along with the current status of approaches to ALS care and treatment. Additional knowledge of the factors driving disease progression and heterogeneity will hopefully soon transform the care for patients with ALS into an individualized, multi-prong approach able to prevent disease progression sufficiently to allow for a dignified life with limited disability
MultiFab: a machine vision assisted platform for multi-material 3D printing
We have developed a multi-material 3D printing platform that is high-resolution, low-cost, and extensible. The key part of our platform is an integrated machine vision system. This system allows for self-calibration of printheads, 3D scanning, and a closed-feedback loop to enable print corrections. The integration of machine vision with 3D printing simplifies the overall platform design and enables new applications such as 3D printing over auxiliary parts. Furthermore, our platform dramatically expands the range of parts that can be 3D printed by simultaneously supporting up to 10 different materials that can interact optically and mechanically. The platform achieves a resolution of at least 40 ÎŒm by utilizing piezoelectric inkjet printheads adapted for 3D printing. The hardware is low cost (less than $7,000) since it is built exclusively from off-the-shelf components. The architecture is extensible and modular -- adding, removing, and exchanging printing modules can be done quickly. We provide a detailed analysis of the system's performance. Ordered Phases of Itinerant Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Magnets and Their Electronic Properties
A field theory appropriate for magnets that display helical order due to the
Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism, a class that includes MnSi and FeGe, is used to
derive the phase diagram in a mean-field approximation. The helical phase, the
conical phase in an external magnetic field, and recent proposals for the
structure of the A-phase and the non-Fermi-liquid region in the paramagnetic
phase are discussed. It is shown that the orientation of the helical pitch
vector along an external magnetic field within the conical phase occurs via two
distinct phase transitions. The Goldstone modes that result from the long-range
order in the various phases are determined, and their consequences for
electronic properties, in particular the specific heat, the single-particle
relaxation time, and the electrical and thermal conductivities, are derived.
Various aspects of the ferromagnetic limit, and qualitative differences between
the transport properties of helimagnets and ferromagnets, are also discussed.Comment: 22pp, 8 eps fig
SEA 32 MULTI-DOMAIN, MANNED-UNMANNED LITTORAL DENIAL SYSTEM
This report details a systems engineering approach to design a manned-unmanned, multi-domain, littoral denial system of systems, projected over the next decade. Mission context scenarios were created to provide diverse system operating environments, enabling a flexible system architecture to address a variety of threats in near-peer competition. With efforts to employ cost-effective and attritable unmanned components, open-source platform reviews were conducted to determine performance parameters, cost, and technical readiness levels, ultimately influencing the eligibility and appropriateness of these platforms for system integration. This evaluation led to a value system design for each candidate platform, providing quantitative analysis for its potential contribution to our system functions as they pertain to each mission scenario. An optimization program under cost constraints was then utilized to yield ideal platform combinations while meeting all functional requirements. Each architecture that resulted from the optimization program was then subjected to a combat model to verify its effectiveness, and then compared to conventional littoral denial constructs. Analysis and comparison of each system architecture yielded relevant insights for the project sponsor at OPNAV N9I (Director of Warfare Integration). Each scenario-dependent system of systems yielded improvements in certain functional evaluations, while also producing degradations in other functional areas.Approved for public release. The O(N) Nonlinear Sigma Model in the Functional Schr\"{o}dinger Picture
We present a functional Schr\"{o}dinger picture formalism of the
(1+1)-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. The energy density has been
calculated to two-loop order using the wave functional of a gaussian form, and
from which the nonperturbative mass gap of the boson fields has been obtained.
The functional Schr\"{o}dinger picture approach combined with the variational
technique is shownto describe the characteristics of the ground state of the
