Compliant and stretchable thermoelectric coils for energy harvesting in miniature flexible devices
With accelerating trends in miniaturization of semiconductor devices, techniques for energy harvesting become increasingly important, especially in wearable technologies and sensors for the internet of things. Although thermoelectric systems have many attractive attributes in this context, maintaining large temperature differences across the device terminals and achieving low–thermal impedance interfaces to the surrounding environment become increasingly difficult to achieve as the characteristic dimensions decrease. Here, we propose and demonstrate an architectural solution to this problem, where thin-film active materials integrate into compliant, open three-dimensional (3D) forms. This approach not only enables efficient thermal impedance matching but also multiplies the heat flow through the harvester, thereby increasing the efficiencies for power conversion. Interconnected arrays of 3D thermoelectric coils built using microscale ribbons of monocrystalline silicon as the active material demonstrate these concepts. Quantitative measurements and simulations establish the basic operating principles and the key design features. The results suggest a scalable strategy for deploying hard thermoelectric thin-film materials in harvesters that can integrate effectively with soft materials systems, including those of the human body
A Novel Dual Self-Centering Friction Damper for Seismic Responses Control of Steel Frame
Due to their weight, the seismic response control of buildings needs a large-scale damper. To reduce the consumption of shape memory alloys (SMAs), this study proposed a dual self-centering pattern accomplished by the coil springs and SMA, which could drive the energy dissipation device to recenter. Combined with the friction energy dissipation device (FD), the dual self-centering friction damper (D-SCFD) was designed, and the motivation and parameters were described. The mechanical properties of D-SCFD, including the simplified D-SCFD mechanical model, theoretical index calculations of recentering, and energy dissipation performance, were then investigated. The seismic response mitigation of the steel frame adopting the D-SCFDs under consecutive strong earthquakes was finally analyzed. The results showed that a decrease in the consumption of SMA by the dual self-centering pattern was feasible, especially in the case of low demand for the recentering performance. Reducing the D-SCFD’s recentering performance hardly affected the steel frame’s residual inter-story drift ratios when the residual deformation rate was less than 50%, which can help strengthen the controls on the steel frame’s peak seismic responses. It is recommended to utilize the D-SCFD with not too high a recentering performance to mitigate the seismic response of the structure
Multifunctional Textiles with Flame Retardant and Antibacterial Properties: A Review
It is well known that bacterial infections and fire-hazards are potentially injurious in daily life. With the increased security awareness of life and properties as well as the improvement of living standards, there has been an increasing demand for multifunctional textiles with flame retardant and antibacterial properties, especially in the fields of home furnishing and medical protection. So far, various treatment methods, including the spray method, the dip-coating method, and the pad-dry-cure method, have been used to apply functional finishing agents onto fabrics to achieve the functionalization in the past exploration stage. Moreover, in addition to the traditional finishing technology, a number of novel technologies have emerged, such as layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition, the sol-gel process, and chemical grafting modification. In addition, some natural biomasses, including chitin, chitosan (CS), and several synthetic functional compounds that possess both flame-retardant and bacteriostatic properties, have also received extensive attention. Hence, this review focuses on introducing some commonly used finishing technologies and flame retardant/antibacterial agents. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods and materials were summarized, which will contribute to future research and promote the development and progress of the industry
