Ferromagnetic Domain Structure of La0.78Ca0.22MnO3 Single Crystals
The magneto-optical technique has been employed to observe spontaneous
ferromagnetic domain structures in La0.78Ca0.22MnO3 single crystals. The
magnetic domain topology was found to be correlated with the intrinsic twin
structure of the investigated crystals. With decreasing temperature the regular
network of ferromagnetic domains undergoes significant changes resulting in
apparent rotation of the domain walls in the temperature range of 70-150 K. The
apparent rotation of the domain walls can be understood in terms of the
Jahn-Teller deformation of the orthorhombic unit cell, accompanied by

On the distribution of career longevity and the evolution of home run prowess in professional baseball
Statistical analysis is a major aspect of baseball, from player averages to
historical benchmarks and records. Much of baseball fanfare is based around
players exceeding the norm, some in a single game and others over a long
career. Career statistics serve as a metric for classifying players and
establishing their historical legacy. However, the concept of records and
benchmarks assumes that the level of competition in baseball is stationary in
time. Here we show that power-law probability density functions, a hallmark of
many complex systems that are driven by competition, govern career longevity in
baseball. We also find similar power laws in the density functions of all major
performance metrics for pitchers and batters. The use of performance-enhancing
drugs has a dark history, emerging as a problem for both amateur and
professional sports. We find statistical evidence consistent with
performance-enhancing drugs in the analysis of home runs hit by players in the
last 25 years. This is corroborated by the findings of the Mitchell Report [1],
a two-year investigation into the use of illegal steroids in major league
baseball, which recently revealed that over 5 percent of major league baseball
players tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in an anonymous 2003

Self-trapped Exciton and Franck-Condon Spectra Predicted in LaMnO
Because the ground state has cooperative Jahn-Teller order, electronic
excitations in LaMnO are predicted to self-trap by local rearrangement of
the lattice. The optical spectrum should show a Franck-Condon series, that is,
a Gaussian envelope of vibrational sidebands. Existing data are reinterpreted
in this way. The Raman spectrum is predicted to have strong multiphonon

Collective dynamics of two-mode stochastic oscillators
We study a system of two-mode stochastic oscillators coupled through their
collective output. As a function of a relevant parameter four qualitatively
distinct regimes of collective behavior are observed. In an extended region of
the parameter space the periodicity of the collective output is enhanced by the
considered coupling. This system can be used as a new model to describe
synchronization-like phenomena in systems of units with two or more oscillation
modes. The model can also explain how periodic dynamics can be generated by
coupling largely stochastic units. Similar systems could be responsible for the
emergence of rhythmic behavior in complex biological or sociological systems.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 5 figure
Ferromagnetic resonance in periodic particle arrays
We report measurements of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of arrays
of submicron size periodic particle arrays of permalloy produced by
electron-beam lithography. In contrast to plane ferromagnetic films, the
spectra of the arrays show a number of additional resonance peaks, whose
position depends strongly on the orientation of the external magnetic field and
the interparticle interaction. Time-dependent micromagnetic simulation of the
ac response show that these peaks are associated with coupled exchange and

kt - factorization and CCFM - the solution for describing the hadronic final states - everywhere ?
The basic ideas of kt-factorization and CCFM parton evolution is discussed.
The unintegrated gluon densities, obtained from CCFM fits to the proton
structure function data at HERA are used to predict hadronic final state cross
sections like jet production at HERA, but also comparisons with recent
measurements of heavy quark production at the Tevatron are presented. Finally,
the kt-factorization approach is applied to Higgs production at high energy
hadron hadron colliders and the transverse momentum spectrum of Higgs

Franck-Condon-Broadened Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectra Predicted in LaMnO3
The sudden photohole of least energy created in the photoemission process is
a vibrationally excited state of a small polaron. Therefore the photoemission
spectrum in LaMnO3 is predicted to have multiple Franck-Condon vibrational
sidebands. This generates an intrinsic line broadening approximately 0.5 eV.
The photoemission spectral function has two peaks whose central energies
disperse with band width approximately 1.2 eV. Signatures of these phenomena
are predicted to appear in angle-resolved photoemission spectra.Comment: Revtex file 4 pages and 3 figure
LiBC by polarized Raman spectroscopy: Evidence for lower crystal symmetry ?
The paper presents polarized Raman scattering study on a few-micron-size
crystallite of LiBC with natural faces. The experiment on as grown sample has
revealed a four lattice modes with frequencies at 1276 cm^-1, 830 cm^-1, 546
cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1, respectively. The number of observed Raman lines and their
selection rules are incompatible with the assumed D6h symmetry. The modes at
1276 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1 correspond to the expected Raman active modes. In
contrast with the superconducting compound MgB2, the B-C bond stretching mode
(at 1276 cm^-1) has rather small damping. The two "forbidden" modes (at 830
cm^-1 and 546 cm^-1) disappeared after subsequent thermal treatment.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, complementary experimental resul
