The aim of this study is to analise the relation between frustration tolerance and video game addiction. It is also intended to analyze a series of variables related to video game behavior and certain characteristics of video games that may mediante in such addiction. A sample of 203 people, of which 123 people claimed to be regular video game players, was obtained for this study. Different tests were used: a test dedicated to evaluate frustration tolerance was applied to the totality of the sample, while a test dedicated to evaluate video game addiction and an ad hoc scale built to evaluate the characteristics of both the video games played and the gaming behavior were applied 2 only to the group of regular video game players. The results obtained show that frustration tolerance was signifficantly different between the video game players when only extreme scores in video game addiction were considered. In the same way, all the variables related to the characteristics of the videogames and video game behaviour obtained signifficant relation with video game addiction. By the results of this study we can conclude that frustration tolerance is a key element that needs to be considered when video game addiction is being approached. Video game characteristics also need to be considered in order to understand the relation between video games and addiction

Injuries to the brachial plexus and subclavian and axillary arteries are uncommon and serious complications of shoulder girdle trauma, due to the close anatomical relationship between them. Neurovascular injuries are most frequent in penetrant lesions, but are are after a closed trauma. When neurological symptoms develop insidiously, some days to weeks after trauma, that should lead to the suspicion of a vascular injury. We report a delayed brachial plexus paralysis in a 39 years old male, who sustained an anterior dislocation of the shoulder ten days before. The DIVAS showed a pseudoaneurysm of the axillary artery and the EMG confirmed the brachial plexus palsy. Treatment consisted in surgical release repair of the vascular defect. One year follow-up show good clinical result

A reattributional training program as a therapeutic strategy for fear of flying

In this study the results for the validation of a reattributional training program applied to the fear of #ying are presented. The program is made up of 13 ($1) sessions and consists of three phases: Information; reattributional training; and the elaboration and application of the treatment designed by the patient with the help of the therapist. The program was applied to 24 patients while 24 other patients made up the waiting control group. The therapeutic success was evaluated by means of self-report scales, and by recording psychophysiological variables in a situation in which subjects viewed a video tape of a #ight. Signi"cant di!erences were obtained from the ANOVAs between experimental and control groups in all of the self-reported variables (p(0.001) and in some of the psychophysiological variables (p(0.05). The results support the e!ectiveness of the program. ( 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

MadridES

Adaptive attunement of selective covert attention to evolutionary-relevant emotional visual scenes

    No full text
We investigated selective attention to emotional scenes in peripheral vision, as a function of adaptive relevance of scene affective content for male and female observers. Pairs of emotional neutral images appeared peripherally with perceptual stimulus differences controlled while viewers were fixating on a different stimulus in central vision. Early selective orienting was assessed by the probability of directing the first fixation towards either scene, and the time until first fixation. Emotional scenes selectively captured covert attention even when they were task irrelevant, thus revealing involuntary, automatic processing. Sex of observers and specific emotional scene content (e.g., male-to-female-aggression, families and babies, etc.) interactively modulated covert attention, depending on adaptive priorities and goals for each sex, both for pleasant and unpleasant content. The attentional system exhibits domain-specific and sex-specific biases and attunements, probably rooted in evolutionary pressures to enhance reproductive and protective success. Emotional cues selectively capture covert attention based on their bio-social significance
