Test well exploration in the Myakka River Basin area, Florida

    Get PDF
In recent years, difficulties encountered in obtaining ground-water supplies with acceptable chemical characteristics in the Myakka River basin area led to the implementation of a test drilling program. Under this program, well drilling and data collection were executed in such a manner that all water-producing zones of the local aquifers, together with the quality and quantity of the water available, were effectively identified. A step-drilling method was utilized which allowed the collection of formation cuttings, water samples, and water-level data, from isolated zones in the well as drilling proceeded. The step drilling procedure is described. The driller's logs, geophysical logs, and chemical quality of water tables are presented.(Document has 66 pages.

If Doubt Arises : How the Department of State\u27s Interpretation of The Immigration and Naturalization Act Invites Discrimination Against the Children of Gay and Lesbian Americans

    Get PDF
Federal statutes granting US. citizenship to children born abroad to an American parent became law long before the advent of reproductive technologies that have helped millions of people grow their families. As written, the laws require further interpretation to address situations where a child is born to a married couple when one parent is American but does not have a biological link to the child. The U.S. Department of State \u27s interpretation of the laws requires staff to review a series offactors when a family applies for their child\u27s citizenship by birth abroad, and these factors result in gay and lesbian headed families always having to prove a biological link between the American parent and child, whilefamilies with straight parents generally do not. The State Department\u27s biological test does not reflect federal appellate courts\u27 understanding of parent-child legal relationships. Courts understand the law as interested in the marital status of the parents at the time of birth, deeming a child born during the course of a valid marriage to be the legal child of the two married parents. This test ignores biology and can be more equitably applied to gay and lesbian parents as well as their straight peers, since the focus is on the parents\u27 marriage rather than the child\u27s conception. Families whose children have been denied US. citizenship by birth abroad to a gay or lesbian American parent are suing the State Department, relying on the judicial test. This comment explores the laws and lawsuits and proposes changes to State Department policy

    Codes from Riemann-Roch Spaces for Y2 = Xp - X over GF(P)

Let Χ denote the hyperelliptic curve y2 = xp - x over a field F of characteristic p. The automorphism group of Χ is G = PSL(2, p). Let D be a G-invariant divisor on Χ(F). We compute explicit F-bases for the Riemann-Roch space of D in many cases as well as G-module decompositions. AG codes with good parameters and large automorphism group are constructed as a result. Numerical examples using GAP and SAGE are also given

Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module feasibility report. Mission planning, mission analysis and software formulation

    Get PDF
A detailed performance evaluation of the Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module design was provided in support of OFT-1 ascent and OFT-1 intact launch aborts. The evaluation method used compared ARD results against results obtained using the full-up Space Vehicle Dynamic Simulations program under the same conditions. Results were presented for each of the three major ARD math models: (1) the ascent numerical integrator; (2) the mass model, and (3) the second stage predictor as well as the total ARD module. These results demonstrate that the baselined ARD module meets all design objectives for mission control center orbital flight test launch/abort support

How Do Quantitative And Qualitative Factors Influence The Selection Of Comparable, Competitive, And Aspirant Groups Under The Proposed AACSB Accreditation Maintenance Process?

    Get PDF
The AACSB Blue Ribbon Committee on Accreditation Quality was “formed to do a thorough review of AACSB International's accreditation standards and procedures and to propose changes appropriate for global quality leadership in the next decade...” Within the proposal from the Blue Ribbon Committee is a change from a reaffirmation process with a site visit every ten years to a maintenance program resulting in a team visit in the sixth year of the cycle. Under the old standards applicants were required to submit “to the appropriate accreditation committee chair, in care of the AACSB International office, five nominations for each team role; i.e., five names for chair, five names for advisor, five for member, and if accounting accreditation were applicable, five names for vice-chair and five names for accounting advisor.” The proposed standards include a team selection process whereby the “applicant submits three comparison groups selected from members of the Accreditation Council... AACSB International will develop an on-line system to assist the applicant to identify potential comparison schools, officially select schools for each comparison group, and continuously maintain comparison group listings in an AACSB International database. Some information is currently available. The on-line service, www.aacsb.edu/knowledgeservices, offers advanced search functions that produce institution lists based on optionally selected criteria.” This AACSB provided information as well as information from other sources constitutes the basis for the recommended comparison group selection process

Preparing a Small Town for a Hazardous Materials Incident: An Examination of Evacuation Routing Algorithms and Plume Models

Evacuation and shelter in place are two common protective action measures during hazardous events that involve the release of hazardous materials. These responses are complex and require advanced planning to determine their appropriateness to reduce human exposure to hazardous materials and minimize related health risks. Evacuation and shelter in place responses were assessed for people in the town of Erwin, Tennessee, USA, a small, rural town in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, using a release of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). The population at risk was identified using historical meteorological data and the Radiological Assessment System for Consequence Analysis tool to create plume models for a hypothetical release of UF6 from a nuclear fuel facility that downblends highly enriched uranium. Two hypothetical evacuation scenarios were modeled. One uses the total road network in Erwin and the other involves a train impeding access to an arterial evacuation route. Two routing algorithms available within the custom network analyst routing tool (ArcCASPER) were used for each scenario: 1) a basic shortest path algorithm and 2) a capacity-aware shortest path evacuation routing algorithm. Post-hoc analyses of each scenario and algorithm indicated that the capacity-aware algorithm predicted the quickest evacuation times for both scenarios. Roads with the longest evacuation times and all critical facilities that would benefit from sheltering in place were identified. The study concluded that the capacity-aware algorithm available within ArcCASPER is the most realistic for the town of Erwin

Quality of care for intimate partner violence in South African primary care : a qualitative study

CITATION: Joyner, K. & Mash, B. 2014. Quality of care for intimate partner violence in South African primary care : a qualitative study. Violence and Victims, 29(4):652-669.The original publication is available at http://www.springerpub.com/violence-and-victims.htmlENGLISH SUMMARY : Intimate partner violence (IPV) makes a substantial contribution to the burden of disease in South Africa. This article explores the current quality of care for IPV in public sector primary care facilities within the Western Cape. Only 10% of women attending primary care, while suffering from IPV, were recognized. Case studies, based on in-depth interviews and medical records, were used to reflect on the quality of care received among the women who were recognized. Care tended to be superficial, fragmented, poorly coordinated, and lacking in continuity. The recognition, management, and appropriate documentation of IPV should be prioritized within the training of primary care providers. It may be necessary to appoint IPV champions within primary care to ensure comprehensive care for survivors of IPV.Post prin
