Surface micromachined membranes for tunnel transducers

    Get PDF
We have developed low-temperature surface micromachining procedures for the fabrication of suspended SiO2/Si3N4 membranes. This fabrication method was integrated with electron beam lithography, anisotropic ion etching, and electroplating to construct electrostatically deflectable tunnel transducers. We show the structures and some preliminary measurements on the performance of these monolithic devices

Soft lithography replica molding of critically coupled polymer microring resonators

    Get PDF
We use soft lithography replica molding to fabricate unclad polystyrene (PS) and clad SU-8 microring resonator filters. The PS resonator has an intrinsic quality factor of 1.0/spl times/10/sup 4/ at /spl lambda/=1.55 /spl mu/m, while that of the SU-8 resonator is 7100. The extinction ratios of the PS and SU-8 microring filters are -12 and -20 dB, respectively, with net insertion losses of 6.7 and 9.9 dB. The good quality factors and high extinction ratios of the microring resonator filters show the practicality of soft-lithography replica molding for the fabrication of integrated optical devices

Coupled Resonator Optical Waveguides: Toward the Slowing and Storage of Light

    Get PDF
The development of a simple, solid-state-based technology to slow the propagation of light could prove an important step in the realization of the high-bit-rate communication systems of the future. The use of coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) as practical elements to slow and store light pulses is one possibility

Small Business Consulting: A 10-Region Analysis of Small Business Institute Programs, 1990*

    Get PDF
Small  Business  Institute  programs  have  operated  in the  U .S . for  almost  two decades.  This particular i1ehicle for small business consulting has  been the focus of many studies. However, a comparative analysis of the programs of the 10 SBA geographical regions has yet to be undertaken. This study examines similarities and differences in the SBI programs  in all 10  regions and  at the same time provides a database upon which other hypotheses may be developed . The benefits anticipated from the results of the research may be used in public policy decisions and in evaluating contributions  by SBIs  to the private  sector

A Comparative Analysis of Two Alternatives to Chemical Aircraft Paint Stripping

    Get PDF
The Air Force must periodically strip and paint its aircraft to prevent the damaging effects of corrosion. The paint removal process typically involves the use of toxic chemicals such as methylene chloride which are soon to be banned as a result of impending environmental regulations and increased costs associated with handling and disposing of such material. The Air Force must choose an alternative to methylene chloride chemical stripping which complies with environmental regulations and reduces costs. This thesis compares the life cycle costs and environmental impacts of two alternatives to chemical aircraft stripping. Plastic Media Blasting (PMB) and Modified Medium Pressure Water (MPW) are compared based on stripping a C-130 aircraft by the PMB process at the Lockheed Aircraft Service Center in Ontario, CA and the MPW process by Warner-Robins AFB, GA. The results of the study indicate that MPW has the lower life cycle costs

Do Trustees and Administrators Matter? Diversifying the Faculty Across Gender Lines

    Get PDF
Our paper focuses on the role that the gender composition of the leaders of American colleges and universities – trustees, presidents/chancellors, and provosts/academic vice presidents – plays in influencing the rate at which academic institutions diversify their faculty across gender lines. Our analyses make use of institutional level panel data that we have collected for a large sample of American academic institutions. We find, other factors held constant including our estimate of the “expected” share of new hires that should be female, that institutions with female presidents/chancellors and female provosts/academic vice presidents, as well as those with a greater share of female trustees, increase their shares of female faculty at a more rapid rate. The magnitudes of the effects of these leaders are larger at smaller institutions, where central administrators may play a larger role in faculty hiring decisions. A critical share of female trustees must be reached before the gender composition of the board matters

Ohio Jury Interrogatories: Civil Rule 49(B)

    Get PDF
Ohio\u27s Civ. R. 49(B) permits parties to submit interrogatories to the jury in order to test the jury\u27s thinking in rendering a verdict. Unlike traditional jury interrogatories, the rule limits interrogatories to subject matter normally associated with the special verdict. For centuries the use of the special verdict has plagued the legal community with confusion. The practitioner, the jury and the trial judge have each had difficulty in a variety of ways when the special verdict is involved
