Estimating Water Demand Schedules for Selected Industries in Arkansas
Water demand functions for the paper and chemical industries in the state of Arkansas were estimated utilizing data collected from individual plants throughout the state. Regression analysis was used to estimate demand functions from a data base which included information on intake and gross water use by source, recirculated water use, costs of acquiring, treating, and discharging water, plant output, employment, and level of technology. The demand for intake water was estimated as an exponential function of average water costs and the level of technology primarily. Price elasticities of demand were estimated as approximately equal to one for both industries. The results of this study could be used to determine the effects of various public policies on the withdrawal of water for industrial purposes

An Evaluation of the Sustainability of Global Tuna Stocks Relative to Marine Stewardship Council Criteria
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has established a program whereby a fishery may be certified as being sustainable. The sustainability of a fishery is defined by MSC criteria which are embodied in three Principles: relating to the status of the stock, the ecosystem of which the stock is a member and the fishery management system. Since many of these MSC criteria are comparable for global tuna stocks, the MSC scoring system was used to evaluate nineteen stocks of tropical and temperate tunas throughout the world and to evaluate the management systems of the Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMO) associated with these stocks
Relativistic Cyclotron Radiation Detection of Tritium Decay Electrons as a New Technique for Measuring the Neutrino Mass
The shape of the beta decay energy distribution is sensitive to the mass of
the electron neutrino. Attempts to measure the endpoint shape of tritium decay
have so far seen no distortion from the zero-mass form, thus placing an upper
limit of m_nu_beta < 2.3 eV. Here we show that a new type of electron energy
spectroscopy could improve future measurements of this spectrum and therefore
of the neutrino mass. We propose to detect the coherent cyclotron radiation
emitted by an energetic electron in a magnetic field. For mildly relativistic
electrons, like those in tritium decay, the relativistic shift of the cyclotron
frequency allows us to extract the electron energy from the emitted radiation.
We present calculations for the energy resolution, noise limits, high-rate
measurement capability, and systematic errors expected in such an experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Hyperspherical theory of anisotropic exciton
A new approach to the theory of anisotropic exciton based on Fock
transformation, i.e., on a stereographic projection of the momentum to the unit
4-dimensional (4D) sphere, is developed. Hyperspherical functions are used as a
basis of the perturbation theory. The binding energies, wave functions and
oscillator strengths of elongated as well as flattened excitons are obtained
numerically. It is shown that with an increase of the anisotropy degree the
oscillator strengths are markedly redistributed between optically active and
formerly inactive states, making the latter optically active. An approximate
analytical solution of the anisotropic exciton problem taking into account the
angular momentum conserving terms is obtained. This solution gives the binding
energies of moderately anisotropic exciton with a good accuracy and provides a
useful qualitative description of the energy level evolution.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Study of deposition of YBa2Cu3O7-x on cubic zirconia
Films of YBa2Cu3O7-x were grown on (100) cubic zirconia with 8 percent yttria by laser ablation from sintered targets of YBa2Cu3O7-x. The temperature of the zirconia substrate during growth was varied between 700 and 780 C. The atmosphere during growth was 170 mtorr of O2. The films were subsequently slowly cooled in-situ in 1 atm of O2. The best films were c-axis aligned and had a transition temperature of 87.7 K. The superconducting transition temperature and the X-ray diffraction analysis is reported as a function of the substrate temperature and of the angle between the laser beam and the target's normal
