$2.00 Gas! Studying the Effects of a Gas Tax Moratorium

There are surprisingly few estimates of the effect of sales taxes on retail prices, especially at the firm level. Further, along both sides of a state border, a change in one state%u2019s sales tax can shed light on the nature of competition, as a subset of firms effectively experiences a change in its marginal cost. This paper considers the suspension, and subsequent reinstatement, of the 5% gasoline sales tax in Illinois and Indiana following a temporary price spike in the spring of 2000. Earlier laws set the timing of the reinstatements, providing plausibly exogenous changes in the tax rates. Using a unique dataset of daily, gas station-level data, retail gas prices are found to drop by 3% following the suspension, and increase by 4% following the reinstatements. After linking the stations to driving distance data, some evidence suggests that the tax increases are associated with higher prices up to an hour%u2019s drive into neighboring states.

Advanced Rotorcraft Transmission (ART) program-Boeing helicopters status report

    Get PDF
The Advanced Rotorcraft Transmission (ART) program is structured to incorporate key emerging material and component technologies into an advanced rotorcraft transmission with the intention of making significant improvements in the state of the art (SOA). Specific objectives of ART are: (1) Reduce transmission weight by 25 pct.; (2) Reduce transmission noise by 10 dB; and (3) Improve transmission life and reliability, while extending Mean Time Between Removal to 5000 hr. Boeing selected a transmission sized for the Tactical Tilt Rotor (TTR) aircraft which meets the Future Air Attack Vehicle (FAVV) requirements. Component development testing will be conducted to evaluate the high risk concepts prior to finalizing the advanced transmission configuration. The results of tradeoff studies and development test which were completed are summarized

A World Apart: How Distance Education Can Effectively Reach Around the Globe

    Get PDF
Distance education has revolutionized the field of education by giving faculty the ability to reach students anywhere on Earth. In many cases, the distances between faculty and students can be rather large with associated opportunities and challenges. An obvious challenge is the need for timely communications between faculty and students as well as among the students themselves. This can be compounded if the nature of the course requires widely dispersed students to work together as a group with the transfer of documents and frequent communications driven by deadlines as well as the desire to produce a complete document that adheres to all requirements

An initial evaluation of MathPad(2): A tool for creating dynamic mathematical illustrations

    Get PDF
MathPad(2) is a pen-based application prototype for creating mathematical sketches. Using a modeless gestural interface, it lets users make dynamic illustrations by associating handwritten mathematics with free-form drawings and provides a set of tools for graphing and evaluating mathematical expressions and solving equations. In this paper, we present the results of an initial evaluation of the MathPad(2) prototype, examining the user interface\u27s intuitiveness and the application\u27s perceived usefulness. Our evaluations are based on both performance and questionnaire results including first attempt gesture performance, interface recall tests, and surveys of user interface satisfaction and perceived usefulness. The results of our evaluation suggest that, although some test subjects had difficulty with our mathematical expression recognizer, they found the interface, in general, intuitive and easy to remember. More importantly, these results suggest the prototype has the potential to assist beginning physics and mathematics students in problem solving and understanding scientific concepts. Dontrell, Who Kissed The Sea: An Expedition into Technical Direction

The Nebraska Repertory Theatre, in partnership with the Johnny Carson School of Theater, Film, and Emerging Media Arts at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, chose to produce Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea in March of 2021. Playwright Nathan Alan Davis completed the play in 2017. He is originally from Rockford, Illinois, and a graduate of Indiana University. Dontrell was his second produced play, premiering in June 2014 at the Source Festival in Washington, DC. Several theatres since 2014 have produced the play, and ours was the third show of the 2021-2022 season. The director was Ron Himes, the Founder and Producing Director of the St. Louis Black Repertory Company. Himes and Nebraska Repertory Theatre artistic director Andy Park agreed to mount the production on the Howell Stage, a 300-seat proscenium theater located in the Temple building on the University campus. After its performances here, it was to travel to the Samuel B. and Charles B. Edison Theatre, located in the Mallinckrodt Center in the Washington University campus. Performances in St. Louis were delayed until June of 2022, however, due to concerns with Covid-19. The Nebraska graduate faculty assigned me the role of Technical Director for the production in March of 2021. This role put me in charge of budgeting materials and labor, drafting and engineering scenery, managing personnel, maintaining safety, scheduling space times, loading scenery into the venue, communicating, and collaborating with other departments, communicating, and collaborating with St. Louis Black Rep for shipping and installation of the show in St. Louis, and upholding the conceptual design of the Scenic Designer. This thesis will focus on my process and experience as said Technical Director for the production to demonstrate that I possessed the proficiency skills required for successful completion of the above tasks.
