    Jesuit B-Schools: Powering Regional Socio-Economic Development and Problem Solving Through Analysis & Application of Best Global Practices

    Our exploratory research and development (R&D) project is a joint undertaking by two Jesuit institutions, Loyola Marymount University (LMU), U.S.A., and Universidad Loyola Andalucía (ULA), Spain. We aim to leverage collaborative potential of Jesuit B-schools to facilitate regional socio-economic development (RSED) and growth through the analysis and application of best global practices. Many universities have rich intellectual potential and information resources that are often underutilized. Our undertaking strives to engage these resources to foster positive impacts on RSED and problem-solving. The project aligns with Jesuit educational values and aims to redirect the creative power of the young generation from dependency toward positive values and meaningful socio-economic engagement. While progress and growth happen through innovation and imitation, much of the effort and resources are often dedicated to innovation without sufficient analysis of existing best global practices and their regional/local applications. Our joint project leverages Jesuit values and educational principles, such as academic excellence, experiential learning, and community service, to position Jesuit B-schools/universities as the catalysts of regional transformation nationally and internationally. We also aim to bridge the gap between the real world and academia by engaging intellectual power and information resources across Jesuit universities to facilitate regional socio-economic development and growth. Our joint project will identify several regional/municipal socio-economic problems or development priorities of common nature in Southern California (SoCal), U.S.A. and Córdoba, Spain, respectively. Tentatively, we identified the following common socio-economic problems/ priorities: for SoCal: access to healthcare; crime; housing affordability/ homelessness; poverty/income inequality; racial/ethnic inequality; for Córdoba: access to healthcare; aging population; lack of economic opportunities; poverty/income inequality; unemployment. We plan to conduct a teamwork project in which students at both universities will conduct a comparative study of best practices worldwide associated with socio-economic problems/ development priorities of common nature selected. Based on their analyses and identification of best global practices, we will organize an online seminar in which LMU and ULA students would interact and exchange their ideas. From their analysis and exchange of information with students from the other university, they will be able to develop and offer policy recommendations or strategic recommendations to respective governing bodies/government agencies in the selected regions. Our pilot project initially involving problem-solving and development on limited scale and two countries can be further expanded to larger-scale projects and multiple countries, prioritizing the Europe/U.S./Latin America (North-South) connection supported and guided by the Jesuit network. Successful implementation of our framework will facilitate efficiencies in the use of public resources in addressing socio-economic problem solving and development priorities of mutual interest. It can be aligned with the UN sustainable development goals and contribute to socio-economic progress and growth through the application of best global practices. LMU, ULA, and other institutions that are part of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) can make an impact in bringing together academia and local community by leveraging intellectual resources to foster socio-economic development, innovation and supporting the needs of local communities

    Síntesis y caracterización de nanosílices funcionalizadas injertadas con 3-aminopropil trietoxisilano para ser utilizadas en adhesivos de poliuretano

    En este trabajo se presentan los resultados obtenidos al modificar superficialmente una sílice pirogénica hidrófila comercial, con una superficie específica de 200 m2 /g, a la que se le injertó 3-aminopropiltrietoxisilano. La nanosílice modificada se añadió a adhesivos de poliuretano termoplástico en metiletilcetona. El material obtenido se caracterizó mediante sus propiedades mecánicas, térmicas, reológicas y adhesivas. Los resultados obtenidos se compararon con los de adhesivos de poliuretano sin sílice y con sílice sin modificar, preparados bajo las mismas condiciones experimentales.Fil: Vega Baudrit, José.     Identification of a novel human E-Cadherin splice variant andassessment of its effects upon EMT-related events

    Epithelial Cadherin (E-cadherin) is involved in calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion and signal transduction. The E-cadherin decrease/loss is a hallmark of Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), a key event in tumor progression. The underlying molecular mechanisms that trigger E-cadherin loss and consequent EMT have not been completely elucidated. This study reports the identification of a novel human E-cadherin variant mRNA produced by alternative splicing. A bioinformatics evaluation of the novel mRNA sequence and biochemical verifications suggest its regulation by Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD). The novel E-cadherin variant was detected in 29/42 (69%) human tumor cell lines, expressed at variable levels (E-cadherin variant expression relative to the wild type mRNA = 0.05-11.6%). Stable transfection of the novel E-cadherin variant in MCF-7 cells (MCF7Ecadvar) resulted in downregulation of wild type E-cadherin expression (transcript/protein) and EMT-related changes, among them acquisition of a fibroblastic-like cell phenotype, increased expression of Twist, Snail, Zeb1, and Slug transcriptional repressors and decreased expression of ESRP1 and ESRP2 RNA binding proteins. Moreover, loss of cytokeratins and gain of vimentin, N-cadherin and Dysadherin/FXYD5 proteins was observed. Dramatic changes in cell behavior were found in MCF7Ecadvar, as judged by the decreased cell-cell adhesion (Hanging-drop assay), increased cell motility (Wound Healing) and increased cell migration (Transwell) and invasion (Transwell w/Matrigel). Some changes were found in MCF-7 cells incubated with culture medium supplemented with conditioned medium from HEK-293 cells transfected with the E-cadherin variant mRNA. Further characterization of the novel E-cadherin variant will help understanding the molecular basis of tumor progression and improve cancer diagnosis.Fil: Matos, María Laura. A nivel mundial, el CaP es el cuarto cáncer más común combinando ambos sexos y el segundo más común en hombres.     Two Teaching Innovation Projects were carried out in the framework of the subjects ‘Physics I’ and ‘Physics II’ for different Degrees on Engineering at the Engineering High School of the University of Cadiz, Spain, during the 2013-2014 course. The aim of these Projects was to catch the interest of first course students on physical phenomena and principles, a matter frequently considered as ‘difficult’ or even ‘boring’ for them when it is approached from an excessively formal scope. The methodology of the two Projects was based on experiments of Recreational Physics, different toys and devices, and other resources as posters, books and online contents. The Projects were conducted during Theory, Laboratory, and Online classes of Physics I and II, and their results were evaluated from questionnaires to the students. Main conclusions derived from them were: i) a significant increment on the interest of students on Physics and Science; ii) the aim of students for learning more about this kind of recreational physical experiments; and iii) a general sensation of enjoying the study and analysis of physical phenomena by students –and teachers as well–. In addition, students manifested their interest in this methodology to be applied to other Engineering subjects of their Degrees
