Tribunal: Emilio Congregado Ramírez de Aguilera (presidente); Jesús Rodríguez López (secretaria); Antonio Montañés Bernal (vocal). This thesis recognizes that the premises of standard cointegration (I (1)/I (0) dichotomy)
are too restrictive. In this sense, the empirical literature has shown that many economic
and financial time series hold long-range dependence in the autocorrelation function but
do not precisely exhibit a unit root process, i.e., the long memory process. For this reason,
traditional cointegration assumptions that the time series may follow the dichotomy I (0)/I (1)
are discard, in favour that they follow a fractional process I (d). We also shed the notion that
the error term follows a stationary process (I (0)) in cases of cointegration of both variables. In
turn, the rigidity of the traditional approach is overcome in favour of allowing for the series
to be cointegrated, and the error term does not necessarily need to be I (0); for example,
the error term may be cointegrated in order I(d − b), unlike other techniques that assume
the error term is I (0). In this sense, the Fractionally Cointegrated Vector Autorregressive
(FCVAR) model is an expansion of the traditional cointegrated VAR (CVAR) model, and
it allows to determine the number of equilibrium relations via cointegrating rank testing to
estimate memory parameters, long-run cointegrating relations with adjustment parameters,
and short-run lagged dynamics. To this end, in the current dissertation, we develop empirical
analysis to demonstrate the properties of the time series under the fractional cointegration
assumptions. In chapters 2 and 3 we consider the cointegrating relation and adjustment
dynamics amongst four major stock markets for the Eurozone, and the five major stock
markets for Latin America, respectively. The results evidence that there is a full financial
integration in both economic regions, despite of the financial crisis occurred in recent years
(this case is studied in chapter 2). The following 4 chapters are devoted to study the term
structure of interest rates. Indeed, we summarize an empirical review of the Expectations
Hypothesis of the Term Structure (EHTS) aiming to establish the adequate procedures for
its measurement by using time series and evidencing the linearity restrictions associated
with the traditional approaches used in time series applications on term structure (chapter
4). Furthermore, it is also analyzed the relationship between the European Over Night
Index Average (Eonia) rate and 3-month Euribor rate (chapter 5). In chapter 6, we apply a
pairwise estimation to a wide sample consisting on 9 different maturities of Treasury Constant
interest rates. Otherwise, in chapter 7, we use two historical databases for the USA in
order to check the behavior of short- and long-term interest rates. In this four chapters,
we demonstrate the fractional properties of the cointegrating relations subject to the EHTS
conditions. Additionally, we study how the spread is resulting both interest rates, jointly,
analyzing the long memory in the spread that has implications for the monetary transmission
mechanism and its effectiveness. In chapter 8, the US debt sustainability is analyzed taking
into account the Intertemporal Budget Constraint conditions. We propose different scenarios
in which the deficit, i.e., the difference between revenues and expenditures, possess different
features, providing significant implications for policy makers. Then, the dominance between
revenues and expenditures in the common trend is shown. Finally, in chapter 9, concerning
the crude oil market, we test if the relationship between West Texas Intermediate and Brent
crude oil is globalized or regionalized. Besides, the difference between both crude oils may
be an indicator of forecasting, depending the value of its degree of integration and to finish,
the driver of the relationship is defined, which may be an indicator for business operators,
arbitrageurs, economic agents and policy makers.Esta tesis reconoce que las premisas de la cointegración estándar (dicotomía I (1)/I (0)) son
demasiado restrictivas.
fraccional I (d).
ajuste y dinámica a corto plazo.
a corto y largo plazo.
How did the Sovereign debt crisis affect the Euro financial integration? A fractional cointegration approach.
This paper examines financial integration among stock markets in the Eurozone using the prices from each
stock index. Monthly time series are constructed for four major stock indices for the period between 1998
and 2016. A fractional cointegrated vector autoregressive model is estimated at an international level. Our
results show that there is a perfect and complete Euro financial integration. Considering the possible
existence of structural breaks, this paper also examines the fractional cointegration within each regime,
showing that Euro financial integration is very robust. However, in the financial and sovereign debt crisis
regime, IBEX 35 appears to be the weak link in Euro financial integration, unless Euro financial
integration recovers when this period ends
The Yield Curve as a Recession Leading Indicator. An Application for Gradient Boosting and Random Forest
Most representative decision-tree ensemble methods have been used to examine the variable importance of Treasury term spreads to predict US economic recessions with a balance of generating rules for US economic recession detection. A strategy is proposed for training the classifiers with Treasury term spreads data and the results are compared in order to select the best model for interpretability. We also discuss the use of SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework to understand US recession forecasts by analyzing feature importance. Consistently with the existing literature we find the most relevant Treasury term spreads for predicting US economic recession and a methodology for detecting relevant rules for economic recession detection. In this case, the most relevant term spread found is 3-month–6-month, which is proposed to be monitored by economic authorities. Finally, the methodology detected rules with high lift on predicting economic recession that can be used by these entities for this propose. This latter result stands in contrast to a growing body of literature demonstrating that machine learning methods are useful for interpretation comparing many alternative algorithms and we discuss the interpretation for our result and propose further research lines aligned with this work
Fiscal sustainability, monetary policy and economic growth in the Euro Area: In search of the ultimate causal path
To assess the ultimate causal flow between monetary policy indicators, fiscal sustainability and economic growth has been deeply studied in the literature. However, this issue is still open to discussion due to mixed results and caveats/limitations of existing studies. Importantly, previous analyses mostly focus on bivariate/trivariate systems, missing a relevant piece of economic drivers. We analyse jointly these interdependencies by applying multivariate Granger Causality and determining an ultimate ”causality path” excluding redundant relationships. Thus, we combine recent developments introduced to estimate the Granger causality procedure based on Meta-analysis in heterogeneous mixed panels and graphical models searching iteratively for the existing dependencies between a multivariate set of information. Our results provide novel empirical evidence suggesting that monetary policy variables play a leading role in the resulting complex economic system. Furthermore, we do find evidence supporting the role of Total Expenditure as a driver of fiscal policy.Sánchez-Fuentes acknowledges the financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (project

The Role of Eonia in the Dynamics of Short-Term Interbank Rates
To signal monetary policies and market expectations, we apply a
fractionally cointegrated vector autoregressive (FCVAR) model, aiming to analyse
the expectations hypothesis of term structure (EHTS), persistence in the
Euro OverNight Index Average (Eonia) spread and permanent-transitory decomposition
using a novel approach. We use a monthly frequency sample for the 3-
month Euribor rate and Eonia rate, covering the period from January 1999 to
February 2019. The results obtained confirm the EHTS and show evidence of a
high persistence of the spread, which means that shocks may impede effectiveness
in monetary policy and that the European Central Bank (ECB) loses control
over interest rates. Additionally, according to permanent-transitory decomposition,
we determine that the Eonia rate has a permanent component and thus
dominates the common trend in the cointegration system. In sum, if the ECB
wants to keep the interbank market interest rates under control, it must contemplate
the evolution of the Eonia rate
The Effect of the U.S. Quantitative Easing on the Term Structure. A Spatial Panel Model Approach
In this paper, we apply the spatial panel model that accounts for serial dynamics, crosssectional dependence, and common factors to assess interest rate sensitivity across the term structure to changes in the policy rate. Considering the Quantitative Easing (QE) program as a breakpoint, we apply this method before and after implementing this program. First, results suggest the existence of spillovers between different maturities. Second, after QE implementation, the impact of monetary policy is influencing more time the interest rates, that is, it will be more persistent, and the influence of Federal Funds rate on Treasury Constant rates has changed, although remaining the same pattern where short-term maturities are more sensitive than long-term ones. Finally, our findings may suggest that the Fed would possess more controllability of the term structure and a more efficient transmission mechanism. These results possess important considerations to policymakers and the effectiveness of the monetary policy applied by the Fed
The influence of cigarette price on the cigarette consumption in Spain: a Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index analysis from 1957 to 2018
Background: The price elasticity of tobacco emerges
as an instrument for minimizing tobacco consumption,
sustained by the idea that although tobacco has an
addictive nature, an increase in its price causes a decrease
in its consumption. However, the price is not the only
component of tobacco consumption studied in the literature.
Some studies include income as an explanatory component
of tobacco consumption. These studies conclude
that income affects tobacco consumption positively.
Methods: In this paper, the factors that affect the
consumption of cigarettes are measured for the Spanish
market using time series data from 1957 to 2018 and by
applying the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index LMDI
method. The novel application of this method to this body
of literature allows us to verify how effective the price
policies that the government has implemented against the
consumption of cigarettes have been.
Results: Our results reveal that income is a determining
factor that sometimes nullifies the effect of policies
when governments increase the price of cigarettes by
taxes. In order to reduce the prevalence of smokers, the
increase in the price of tobacco must consider the effect
of income on consumption, so that it does not cancel the
effects of health policy.
Conclusions: It is strongly recommended that tax
authorities consider these results before applying antismoking
policies. If the authorities do not do so, it is possible
that they will not obtain the expected results in terms
of minimized the cigarette consumption
