    Debris/ice/TPS assessment and integrated photographic analysis for Shuttle Mission STS-56

    The Debris Team developed and implemented measures to control damage from debris in the Shuttle operational environment and to make the control measures a part of routine launch flows. These measures include engineering surveillance during vehicle processing and closeout operations, facility and flight hardware inspections before and after launch, and photographic analysis of mission events. Photographic analyses of mission imagery from launch, on-orbit, and landing provide significant data in verifying proper operation of systems and evaluating anomalies. In addition to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Photo/Video Analysis, reports from JSC, MSFC, and Rockwell International--Downey are also included in this document to provide an integrated assessment of the mission

    For over 30 years the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) has processed the Space Shuttle; handling all hands-on aspects from receiving the Orbiter, External Tanks, Solid Rocket Booster Segments, and Payloads, through certification, check-out, and assembly, and ending with fueling, count-down, and launch. A team of thousands have worked this highly complicated, yet supremely organized, process and have, as a consequence, generated an exceptional amount of technology to solve a host of problems.     A debris/ice/thermal protection system assessment and integrated photographic analysis was conducted for Shuttle mission STS-68. Debris inspections of the flight elements and launch pad were performed before and after launch. Icing conditions on the External Tank were assessed by the use of computer programs, nomographs, and infrared scanner data during cryogenic loading of the vehicle followed by on-pad visual inspection. High speed photography of the launch was analyzed to identify ice/debris sources and evaluate potential vehicle damage and/or in-flight anomalies. This report-documents the ice/debris/thermal protection system conditions and integrated photographic analysis of Shuttle mission STS-68, and the resulting effect on the Space Shuttle Program

The report focuses on the economic impact of the vacation rental home industry in 25 Florida counties selected by the client, Florida Realtors® (Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Nassau, Duval, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Orange, Osceola, Brevard, Volusia, and Flagler). When combined, these 25 counties include 89.3% of the total amount of registered vacation rental homes in the state of Florida

    Lightning Impulse Current Tests on Conductive Fabrics

    Submitted to "Journal of Industrial Textiles"The large amount of electric current associated to lightning discharges is hazardous for living beings, equipment, structures and buildings. To protect those targets against lightning are used Lightning Protection Systems (LPS). However, there are some temporary outdoor activities and backcountry places where an adequate LPS cannot be set up mainly due to the large dimensions of its components and its heavy weight. On the search of light weight lightning protection materials that can be used as part of special LPS, we research some types of electroconductive fabrics by applying high lightning impulse currents in laboratory. The fabric samples checked were pieces of 10 cm x 10 cm: two rip-stop type, a plain-weave, a non-woven and a carbon-impregnated polymeric, all of them obtained commercially. Under laboratory conditions, these samples were subject to subsequent lightning impulse currents registering the voltage and current signals. Optical and scanning electron microscope inspections were performed after tests. Despite some changes visualized as marks left on the fabric surface, the results show that investigated conductive textiles can endure ground currents produced by atmospheric lightning since they withstand the several applied laboratory lightning impulse currents. The outcomes suggest that the weave pattern of the conductive fabric influences the lightning current tolerance, enabling some conductive fabrics to be used in heavy-current applications and as part of personal LPS for outdoor, backcountry and mobile shelters, particularly when lightweight and portability are mandatory

    Association between long-term air pollution exposure and COVID-19 mortality in Latin America

    Recent studies have shown a relationship between air pollution and increased vulnerability and mortality due to COVID-19. Most of these studies have looked at developed countries. This study examines the relationship between long-term exposure to air pollution and COVID-19-related deaths in four countries of Latin America that have been highly affected by the pandemic: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. Our results suggest that an increase in long-term exposure of 1 μg/m3 of fine particles is associated with a 2.7 percent increase in the COVID-19 mortality rate. This relationship is found primarily in municipalities of metropolitan areas, where urban air pollution sources dominate, and air quality guidelines are usually exceeded. By focusing the analysis on Latin America, we provide a first glimpse on the role of air pollution as a risk factor for COVID-19 mortality within a context characterized by weak environmental institutions, limited health care capacity and high levels of inequality

    Synthesis of Palladium with Different Nanoscale Structures by Sputtering Deposition onto Fiber Templates

    A flexible and versatile method combining sputtering and electrospinning techniques was used to shape different palladium morphological structures with nanoscale features. The samples were prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering onto thermally degradable polymer templates. The sputtering parameters were chosen to deposit the metal under low adatom-mobility conditions. After deposition, the template was removed by heat treatment, thereby forming different palladium morphologies with shapes resembling ribbons and half tubes, amongst others. X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that they are composed of crystalline palladium or palladium oxide, depending on the heat treatment. The cylindrical walls are composed of 30 nm or smaller crystallites, as measured from transmission electron microscopy images. A mathematical simulation demonstrate that the morphological structures obtained are a consequence of the sputtering line-of-sight deposition process. This fabrication process can be varied to modify three types of structures at the nanoscale level: the external shape, the columnar shape of the walls, and the nano-crystallinity. The external shape can be modified by controlling the deposition time and the fiber template diameter. The columnar shape of the walls and the nano-crystallinity can be modified by changes in the sputtering process parameters. The nanoscale morphologies created have potential uses in sensing and photonic applications
