    The Looking Glass Lens: Self-concept Changes Due to Social Media Practices

    This study brought an enduring social psychology theory into the era of mass self-communication. Cooley’s (1902) looking glass self posits that the self-concept is built, in part, by how a person sees him- or herself and, in part, by the reaction of others. For social media producers, neither the reflection nor others’ judgment needs to be imagined. Digital media can serve as a mediated mirror and social media sites provide the space where others’ judgments are clearly posted. YouTube producers were asked if they had come to see themselves differently since posting to the mega-media site and, if so, how. Forty-six participants reported self-concept changes ranging from being more accepting of their physical appearance to gaining confidence from overcoming the sting of negative comments to being empowerment due to a new role within a global, digital environment. The combination of media and media sharing platforms can serve as a digital looking glass lens.

    Study of the spatial variation of the biodegradation rate of the herbicide bentazone with soil depth using contrasting incubation methods

    Vertical and horizontal spatial variability in the biodegradation of the herbicide bentazone was compared in sandy-loam soil from an agricultural field using sieved soil and intact soil cores. An initial experiment compared degradation at five depths between 0 and 80 cm using sieved soil. Degradation was shown to follow the first-order kinetics, and time to 50% degradation (DT50), declined progressively with soil depth from 56 d at 0–10 cm to 520 d at 70–80 cm. DT50 was significantly correlated with organic matter, pH and dehydrogenase activity. In a subsequent experiment, degradation rate was compared after 127 d in sieved soil and intact cores from 0 to 10 and 50 to 60 cm depth from 10 locations across a 160 × 90 m portion of the field. Method of incubation significantly affected mean dissipation rate, although there were relatively small differences in the amount of pesticide remaining in intact cores and sieved soil, accounting for between 4.6% and 10.6% of that added. Spatial variability in degradation rate was higher in soil from 0 to 10 cm depth relative to that from 50 and 60 cm depth in both sieved soil and intact core assessments. Patterns of spatial variability measured using cores and sieved soil were similar at 50–60 cm, but not at 0–10 cm depth. This could reflect loss of environmental context following processing of sieved soil. In particular, moisture content, which was controlled in sieved soil, was found to be variable in cores, and was significantly correlated with degradation rate in intact topsoil cores from 0 to 10 cm depth

    Community Navigation as a Field of Practice: Reframing Service Delivery to Meet the Needs of Communities’ Marginalized Populations

    Community navigators help individuals and families access local services and assistance through a combination of referrals and interpersonal support. The Denver Foundation launched the Basic Human Needs Navigator Learning Community in February 2014 to help navigators working with local organizations and community members practicing navigation independently improve their practice and identify similarities and differences in their approaches. This article discusses the multiyear, peer-learning project, including the general lessons the foundation learned about both navigation and the use of a learning-community approach to reach its field-building goals. Reports from participating organizations and community members over four years suggest the efficacy of both navigation as a model for addressing gaps in service provision and of the learning-community approach in driving early-stage field-building outcomes

    Sustaining Civic Engagement: Faculty Development, Roles, and Rewards

    Civic engagement of students, faculty, and staff is identified as central to the mission of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Although nearly all of the Campus Compact Indicators of Engagement could be cited as mechanisms through which IUPUI’s civic engagement mission is supported (Bringle and Hatcher 2004), this article will focus on faculty roles and rewards. Following an introduction that describes the university’s core mission and values with respect to civic engagement, the discussion will focus on specific policies, procedures, and programs to support faculty roles and rewards for civic engagement. A conceptual framework for faculty development, based on experiential learning theory (Kolb 1984) is used to organize a description of faculty development activities to promote civic engagement

    Mind-Body Skills Groups for Adolescents with Depression in Primary Care: A Pilot Study

    Objective: To determine acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of Mind-Body Skills Groups (MBSGs) as a treatment for depressed adolescents in primary care. Methods: A single arm clinical trial was conducted. A 10-week MBSG program was implemented in primary care. Participants completed self-report measures at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-months following the MBSGs. Measures included the Children’s Depression Inventory-2, Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Self-Efficacy for Depressed Adolescents, rumination subscale of the Children’s Response Style Questionnaire, and a short acceptability questionnaire. Results: Participants included 43 adolescents. The total depression scores significantly improved following the MBSG intervention and continued to improve significantly from post-treatment to follow-up. Mindfulness, self-efficacy, rumination, and suicidal ideation all had significant improvement following the intervention. Acceptability of the program was strong, and attendance was excellent. Discussion: Preliminary evidence suggests that MBSGs are an acceptable treatment for primary care settings and lead to improved depression symptoms in adolescents.Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center and the Herbert Simon Family Foundation (070241-00002B

    Effect of carbohydrate feeding on the bone metabolic response to running

    Bone resorption is increased after running, with no change in bone formation. Feeding during exercise might attenuate this increase, preventing associated problems for bone. This study investigated the immediate and short-term bone metabolic responses to carbohydrate (CHO) feeding during treadmill running. Ten men completed two 7-day trials, once being fed CHO (8% glucose immediately before, every 20 min during, and immediately after exercise at a rate of 0.7 g CHO·kg body mass-1·h-1) and once being fed placebo (PBO). On day 4 of each trial, participants completed a 120-min treadmill run at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). Blood was taken at baseline (BASE), immediately after exercise (EE), after 60 (R1) and 120 (R2) min of recovery, and on three follow-up days (FU1-FU3). Markers of bone resorption [COOH-terminal telopeptide region of collagen type 1 (β-CTX)] and formation [NH2-terminal propeptides of procollagen type 1 (P1NP)] were measured, along with osteocalcin (OC), parathyroid hormone (PTH), albumin-adjusted calcium (ACa), phosphate, glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), insulin, cortisol, leptin, and osteoprotogerin (OPG). Area under the curve was calculated in terms of the immediate (BASE, EE, R1, and R2) and short-term (BASE, FU1, FU2, and FU3) responses to exercise. β-CTX, P1NP, and IL-6 responses to exercise were significantly lower in the immediate postexercise period with CHO feeding compared with PBO (β-CTX: P=0.028; P1NP: P=0.021; IL-6: P=0.036), although there was no difference in the short-term response (β-CTX: P=0.856; P1NP: P=0.721; IL-6: P=0.327). No other variable was significantly affected by CHO feeding during exercise. We conclude that CHO feeding during exercise attenuated the β-CTX and P1NP responses in the hours but not days following exercise, indicating an acute effect of CHO feeding on bone turnover

    Nonresponse Error in Mail Surveys: Top Ten Problems

    Conducting mail surveys can result in nonresponse error, which occurs when the potential participant is unwilling to participate or impossible to contact. Nonresponse can result in a reduction in precision of the study and may bias results. The purpose of this paper is to describe and make readers aware of a top ten list of mailed survey problems affecting the response rate encountered over time with different research projects, while utilizing the Dillman Total Design Method. Ten nonresponse error problems were identified, such as inserter machine gets sequence out of order, capitalization in databases, and mailing discarded by postal service. These ten mishaps can potentiate nonresponse errors, but there are ways to minimize their frequency. Suggestions offered stem from our own experiences during research projects. Our goal is to increase researchers' knowledge of nonresponse error problems and to offer solutions which can decrease nonresponse error in future projects
