A Technician's Dream? The Critical Reception of 3-D Films in Britain

    Get PDF
Recent debates about the role of 3-D within cinema (and other media) have contained the traces of a largely anti-stereoscopic agenda that can be traced back to critical responses to 3-D in the 1950s. This article considers how British film reviews from the 1950s and 1980s established potent terms of discussion around the 3-D technology, its potential aesthetic development, and the role of stereoscopy within cinema. Exploring the parameters that the original reviewers set in place concerning the 3-D aesthetic, notably claims around realism, novelty, and gimmickry, the article argues that the language and terms of 1950s British film reviewers have worked to set an agenda that resonates through both the 1980s 3-D revival and modern day digital 3-D

Maryland: Round 1 - State Level Field Network Study of the Implementation of the Affordable Care Act

This report is part of a series of 21 state and regional studies examining the rollout of the ACA. The national network -- with 36 states and 61 researchers -- is led by the Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy research arm of the State University of New York, the Brookings Institution, and the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania. There is clear alignment among most groups and institutions on the state's adoption and implementation of the ACA. Because of its all-payer rate system, competition between private plans and exchange plans is muted. Some conservative elements in the Democratic-heavy legislature oppose rate-setting and the state's generous Medicaid expansions as well as its affirmation of the ACA. But with strong Democratic majorities in both houses, together with Democrats in the governor's and lieutenant governor's offices and professionals with policy and political expertise, the state's progressive reformers are clear winners. The state's inclusive and generous eligibility decisions will afford coverage to a broad portion of the state's uninsured populations. Advocates for these groups also win. In the case of Maryland, the "stars were aligned" to formulate an aggressive and expansive approach to the law. Minority opposition simply could not mount effective challenges to these forces

Profile morphology and polarization of young pulsars

We present polarization profiles at 1.4 and 3.1 GHz for 14 young pulsars with characteristic ages less than 75 kyr. Careful calibration ensures that the absolute position angle of the linearly polarized radiation at the pulsar is obtained. In combination with previously published data we draw three main conclusions about the pulse profiles of young pulsars. (1) Pulse profiles are simple and consist of either one or two prominent components. (2) The linearly polarized fraction is nearly always in excess of 70 per cent. (3) In profiles with two components the trailing component nearly always dominates, only the trailing component shows circular polarization and the position angle swing is generally flat across the leading component and steep across the trailing component. Based on these results we can make the following generalisations about the emission beams of young pulsars. (1) There is a single, relatively wide cone of emission from near the last open field lines. (2) Core emission is absent or rather weak. (3) The height of the emission is between 1 and 10 per cent of the light cylinder radius.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 page

"A step into the abyss" Transmedia in the UK Games and Television Industries

    Get PDF
This article uses a media industries studies perspective to investigate the current state of transmedia production in the UK. Analysing the discursive statements of a range of industry participants from both UK television and games industries, the article reveals a series of contradictions and misunderstandings that may be limiting the effectiveness of multi-platform projects. By comparing overlapping discursive patterns around attitudes to risk, measures of success, authorship between the two industries, and repeated concerns over the balance of creative and commercial imperatives, the article argues that existing hierarchies of power between media industries threaten to derail future convergence

Origin of the transient unpulsed radio emission from the PSR B1259-63 binary system

    Get PDF
We discuss the interpretation of transient, unpulsed radio emission detected from the unique pulsar/Be-star binary system PSR B1259-63. Extensive monitoring of the 1994 and 1997 periastron passages has shown that the source flares over a 100-day interval around periastron, varying on time-scales as short as a day and peaking at 60 mJy (~100 times the apastron flux density) at 1.4 GHz. Interpreting the emission as synchrotron radiation, we show that (i) the observed variations in flux density are too large to be caused by the shock interaction between the pulsar wind and an isotropic, radiatively driven, Be-star wind, and (ii) the radio emitting electrons do not originate from the pulsar wind. We argue instead that the radio electrons originate from the circumstellar disk of the Be star and are accelerated at two epochs, one before and one after periastron, when the pulsar passes through the disk. A simple model incorporating two epochs of impulsive acceleration followed by synchrotron cooling reproduces the essential features of the radio light curve and spectrum and is consistent with the system geometry inferred from pulsed radio data.Comment: To be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters 7 pages, 1 postscript figur

What role does the right side of the heart play in circulation?

    Get PDF
Right ventricular failure (RVF) is an underestimated problem in intensive care. This review explores the physiology and pathophysiology of right ventricular function and the pulmonary circulation. When RVF is secondary to an acute increase in afterload, the picture is one of acute cor pulmonale, as occurs in the context of acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary embolism and sepsis. RVF can also be caused by right myocardial dysfunction. Pulmonary arterial catheterization and echocardiography are discussed in terms of their roles in diagnosis and treatment. Treatments include options to reduce right ventricular afterload, specific pulmonary vasodilators and inotropes

    A viscous-inviscid interactive compressor calculations

    Get PDF
A viscous-inviscid interactive procedure for subsonic flow is developed and applied to an axial compressor stage. Calculations are carried out on a two-dimensional blade-to-blade region of constant radius assumed to occupy a mid-span location. Hub and tip effects are neglected. The Euler equations are solved by MacCormack's method, a viscous marching procedure is used in the boundary layers and wake, and an iterative interaction scheme is constructed that matches them in a way that incorporates information related to momentum and enthalpy thicknesses as well as the displacement thickness. The calculations are quasi-three-dimensional in the sense that the boundary layer and wake solutions allow for the presence of spanwise (radial) velocities
