Neural coding strategies and mechanisms of competition
A long running debate has concerned the question of whether neural
representations are encoded using a distributed or a local coding scheme. In
both schemes individual neurons respond to certain specific patterns of
pre-synaptic activity. Hence, rather than being dichotomous, both coding
schemes are based on the same representational mechanism. We argue that a
population of neurons needs to be capable of learning both local and distributed
representations, as appropriate to the task, and should be capable of generating
both local and distributed codes in response to different stimuli. Many neural
network algorithms, which are often employed as models of cognitive processes,
fail to meet all these requirements. In contrast, we present a neural network
architecture which enables a single algorithm to efficiently learn, and respond
using, both types of coding scheme
Reconstructive problems in canine liver homotransplantation with special reference to the postoperative role of hepatic venous flow
The homologous canine liver has been transplanted to recipient animals in which total hepatectomy and splenectomy have been performed. The longest survival after placement of the liver homograft was 20 1/2 days. Protection from hepatic ischemia for as long as 2 hours was obtained by cooling the donor liver to 10 to 20 degrees C. The arterial supply was restored through a hepatic artery-aortic pedicle which was removed in continuity with the liver and anastomosed to the descending aorta of the recipient. Internal biliary drainage was established. The volume of venous flow transmitted to the transplanted liver has been shown to be an important determinant of success. When this was excessive, as when both the portal and inferior caval flows were directed through the liver, hepatic and splanchnic beds. When the portal flow was normal or reduced, outflow block rarely occurred. An attempt has been made to relate the development of outflow block as it occurred in the transplanted liver to other circumstances, including hemorrhagic shock, in which similar phenomena have been observed
The End is Not the Injury: Posttraumatic Growth After Sport Injuries
This quantitative study explored whether serious injuries in varsity high school or collegiate athletes could produce Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). The impact of injury (season- or career-ending) and an athlete’s highest level of competition played (varsity high school or collegiate) were examined on five elements on the 2-item Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI): (1) relating to others, (2) new possibilities, (3) personal strength, (4) spiritual change, and (5) appreciation of life. This study provides evidence that sport level does not impact an athlete’s ability to produce PTG and bring awareness to trauma and the role PTG can have in an athlete’s life
Visual art inspired by the collective feeding behavior of sand-bubbler crabs
Sand--bubblers are crabs of the genera Dotilla and Scopimera which are known
to produce remarkable patterns and structures at tropical beaches. From these
pattern-making abilities, we may draw inspiration for digital visual art. A
simple mathematical model is proposed and an algorithm is designed that may
create such sand-bubbler patterns artificially. In addition, design parameters
to modify the patterns are identified and analyzed by computational aesthetic
measures. Finally, an extension of the algorithm is discussed that may enable
controlling and guiding generative evolution of the art-making process
An invisibility cloak using silver nanowires
In this paper, we use the parameter retrieval method together with an
analytical effective medium approach to design a well-performed invisible
cloak, which is based on an empirical revised version of the reduced cloak. The
designed cloak can be implemented by silver nanowires with elliptical
cross-sections embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate host. This cloak is
numerically proved to be robust for both the inner hidden object as well as
incoming detecting waves, and is much simpler thus easier to manufacture when
compared with the earlier proposed one [Nat. Photon. 1, 224 (2007)].Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Measurement of sulfur L2,3 and carbon K edge XANES in a polythiophene film using a high harmonic supercontinuum
We use a high harmonic generated supercontinuum in the soft X-ray region to measure X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra in polythiophene (poly(3-hexylthiophene)) films at multiple absorption edges. A few-cycle carrier-envelope phase-stable laser pulse centered at 1800 nm was used to generate a stable soft X-ray supercontinuum, with amplitude gating limiting the generated pulse duration to a single optical half-cycle. We report a quantitative transmission measurement of the sulfur L2,3 edge over the range 160-200 eV and the carbon K edge from 280 to 330 eV. These spectra show all the features previously reported in the XANES spectra of polythiophene, but for the first time they are measured with a source that has an approximately 1 fs pulse duration. This study opens the door to measurements that can fully time-resolve the photoexcited electronic dynamics in these systems
Polarization of coalitions in an agent-based model of political discourse
Political discourse is the verbal interaction between political actors in a policy domain. This article explains the formation of polarized advocacy or discourse coalitions in this complex phenomenon by presenting a dynamic, stochastic, and discrete agent-based model based on graph theory and local optimization. In a series of thought experiments, actors compute their utility of contributing a specific statement to the discourse by following ideological criteria, preferential attachment, agenda-setting strategies, governmental coherence, or other mechanisms. The evolving macro-level discourse is represented as a dynamic network and evaluated against arguments from the literature on the policy process. A simple combination of four theoretical mechanisms is already able to produce artificial policy debates with theoretically plausible properties. Any sufficiently realistic configuration must entail innovative and path-dependent elements as well as a blend of exogenous preferences and endogenous opinion formation mechanisms
