    Eosinophilic bronchitis, eosinophilic granuloma, and eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy in 75 dogs (2006-2016).

    BackgroundEosinophilic lung disease is a poorly understood inflammatory airway disease that results in substantial morbidity.ObjectiveTo describe clinical findings in dogs with eosinophilic lung disease defined on the basis of radiographic, bronchoscopic, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) analysis. Categories included eosinophilic bronchitis (EB), eosinophilic granuloma (EG), and eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy (EBP).AnimalsSeventy-five client owned dogs.MethodsMedical records were retrospectively reviewed for dogs with idiopathic BAL fluid eosinophilia. Information abstracted included duration and nature of clinical signs, bronchoscopic findings, and laboratory data. Thoracic radiographs were evaluated for the pattern of infiltrate, bronchiectasis, and lymphadenomegaly.ResultsThoracic radiographs were normal or demonstrated a bronchial pattern in 31 dogs assigned a diagnosis of EB. Nine dogs had intraluminal mass lesions and were bronchoscopically diagnosed with EG. The remaining 35 dogs were categorized as having EBP based on radiographic changes, yellow green mucus in the airways, mucosal changes, and airway collapse. Age and duration of cough did not differ among groups. Dogs with EB were less likely to have bronchiectasis or peripheral eosinophilia, had lower total nucleated cell count in BAL fluid, and lower percentage of eosinophils in BAL fluid compared to dogs in the other 2 groups. In contrast to previous reports, prolonged survival (>55 months) was documented in dogs with EG.Conclusions and clinical importanceDogs with eosinophilic lung disease can be categorized based on imaging, bronchoscopic and BAL fluid cytologic findings. Further studies are needed to establish response to treatment in these groups

    Clinical Management of a Patient with Chronic Recurrent Vertigo Following a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

    Vertigo, was provoked and right torsional up-beat nystagmus was observed in a 47-year-old patient when she was placed into the right Hallpike-Dix test position using infrared goggle technology. The clinical diagnosis was benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), specifically right posterior canalithiasis, resulting from a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) suffered approximately six-months earlier. Previous medical consultations did not include vestibular system examination, and Meclizine was prescribed to suppress her chief complaint of vertigo. Ultimately, the patient was successfully managed by performing two canalith repositioning maneuvers during a single clinical session. The patient reported 100% resolution of symptoms upon reexamination the following day, and the Hallpike-Dix test was negative. Continued symptom resolution was subjectively reported 10 days postintervention via telephone consultation. This case report supports previous publications concerning the presence of BPPV following TBI and the need for inclusion of vestibular system examination during medical consultation

    Comprehensive modeling of near-field nano-patterning

    Near-field nano-patterning greatly simplifies holographic lithography, but deformations in formed structures are potentially severe. A fast and efficient comprehensive model was developed to predict geometry more rigorously. Numerical results show simple intensity-threshold methods do not accurately predict shape or optical behavior. By modeling sources with partial coherence, unpolarized light, and an angular spectrum, it is shown that standard UV lamps can be used to form 3D structures

    Mapping the optical properties of slab-type two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides

    We report on systematic experimental mapping of the transmission properties of two-dimensional silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal waveguides for a broad range of hole radii, slab thicknesses and waveguide lengths for both TE and TM polarizations. Detailed analysis of numerous spectral features allows a direct comparison of experimental data with 3D plane wave and finite-difference time-domain calculations. We find, counter-intuitively, that the bandwidth for low-loss propagation completely vanishes for structural parameters where the photonic band gap is maximized. Our results demonstrate that, in order to maximize the bandwidth of low-loss waveguiding, the hole radius must be significantly reduced. While the photonic band gap considerably narrows, the bandwidth of low-loss propagation in PhC waveguides is increased up to 125nm with losses as low as 8±\pm2dB/cm.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    The structure and spectroscopic properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of perylene tetracarboxylic derivatives.

    A series of perylene tetracarboxylic diimides and monoimides have been fabricated into Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. These films have been spectroscopically characterized through UV-visible absorption, steady-state fluorescence, infrared and Raman techniques. Molecular exciton and excimer formation have been observed for these films. The average molecular orientation of the chromophore was deduced through infrared transmission and reflection/absorption techniques. Electronic spectroscopy revealed the nature of the packing of the materials. The role of subphase/molecule and molecule/molecule interactions in the structure of the film were discussed, as well as the role of the imide substitution. These materials were successfully incorporated, as donors, into energy transfer systems with lutetium diphthalocyanine as an acceptor. These monolayers were used to investigate surface enhanced infrared and surface enhanced infrared reflection/absorption. The distance dependence and angle dependence of the enhancement in the infrared was simulated by using the Maxwell-Garnett composite layer model.     Selective excitation of the LP11 mode in step index fiber using a phase mask

    We present a novel mode selective coupling technique for step index fiber. This technique utilizes phase matching for excitation of higher-order modes while suppressing the fundamental mode. Using this technique, a phase element is fabricated and tested to demonstrate the high coupling efficiency to the LP11 mode. In addition, we derive an analytical expression of the coupling efficiency of the LP11 using a single phase element

    Schools Pupils’ Perceptions of Factors Impacting on their Creativity Development in Ghana

    This study examines the pupils’ perceptions of factors likely to impact on their creativity development in public and private primary schools in Asokwa Sub-Metro Authority, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Questionnaires were administered to the pupils to examine their attitudes, beliefs, and current school and classroom environments. Pupils were found to possess accurate concepts regarding what constitutes creativity and revealed conflicts with the school and classroom environments. The paradox between public and private schools pupils’ reported support for creativity enrichment and virtual lack of related classroom practice and inadequate school infrastructure is explored as a result of multiple misconceptions and contributing variables. Results tested at the 0.05 level of significance indicated that significant difference existed in the pupils` perception of detail bases on (i) school type; (ii) age; while no significant difference existed in the perception of details of pupils based on school class and gender. Implications are discussed, as well as possible limitations and directions for future research. Further studies would need to be conducted to investigate the conditions under which perception of creativity development in children would be enhanced alongside their academic achievement.
