The optimal accumulation of human capital over the life cycle / BEBR No.553
Includes bibliographical references (p. 28)."This paper summarizes the important contributions of the new life cycle human capital literature and demonstrates that many of these results can be derived more simply than in their original presentations. Within three period discrete-time framework it is demonstrated how the optimal pattern of human capital investment over the life cycle depends upon the choice of the objective function, the life cycle of leisure, and the extent of nonmarket benefits of human capital. The paper offers sufficient conditions for the optimality of a profile of monotonically declining investment activity over the life cycle.
The application of time-series MODIS NDVI profiles for the acquisition of crop information across Afghanistan
We investigated and developed a prototype crop information system integrating 250 m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data with other available remotely sensed imagery, field data, and knowledge as part of a wider project monitoring opium and cereal crops. NDVI profiles exhibited large geographical variations in timing, height, shape, and number of peaks, with characteristics determined by underlying crop mixes, growth cycles, and agricultural practices. MODIS pixels were typically bigger than the field sizes, but profiles were indicators of crop phenology as the growth stages of the main first-cycle crops (opium poppy and cereals) were in phase. Profiles were used to investigate crop rotations, areas of newly exploited agriculture, localized variation in land management, and environmental factors such as water availability and disease. Near-real-time tracking of the current years’ profile provided forecasts of crop growth stages, early warning of drought, and mapping of affected areas. Derived data products and bulletins provided timely crop information to the UK Government and other international stakeholders to assist the development of counter-narcotic policy, plan activity, and measure progress. Results show the potential for transferring these techniques to other agricultural systems

Survey and monitoring of opium poppy and wheat in Afghanistan: 2003-2009
An integrated application of remote-sensing technology was devised and applied in Afghanistan during 2003–2009 providing critical information on cereal and poppy cultivation and poppy eradication. The results influenced UK and international policy and counter-narcotics actions in Afghanistan

Illuminating trap density trends in amorphous oxide semiconductors with ultrabroadband photoconduction
Under varying growth and device processing conditions, ultrabroadband
photoconduction (UBPC) reveals strongly evolving trends in the defect density
of states (DoS) for amorphous oxide semiconductor thin-film transistors (TFTs).
Spanning the wide bandgap of amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO), UBPC identifies
seven oxygen-deep donor vacancy peaks that are independently confirmed by
energetically matching to photoluminescence emission peaks. The sub-gap DoS
from 15 different types of a-IGZO TFTs all yield similar DoS, except only
back-channel etch TFTs can have a deep acceptor peak seen at 2.2 eV below the
conduction band mobility edge. This deep acceptor is likely a zinc vacancy,
evidenced by trap density which becomes 5-6x larger when TFT wet-etch methods
are employed. Certain DoS peaks are strongly enhanced for TFTs with active
channel processing damage caused by plasma exposure. While Ar implantation and
He plasma processing damage are similar, Ar plasma yields more disorder showing
a 2x larger valence-band Urbach energy and two orders of magnitude increase in
the deep oxygen vacancy trap density. Changing the growth conditions of a-IGZO
also impacts the DoS, with zinc-rich TFTs showing much poorer electrical
performance compared to 1:1:1 molar ratio a-IGZO TFTs owing to the former
having a ~10xlarger oxygen vacancy trap density. Finally, hydrogen is found to
behave as a donor in amorphous indium tin gallium zinc oxide TFTs.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Dissecting the genetic components of a quantitative trait locus for blood pressure and renal pathology on rat chromosome 3
Background: We have previously confirmed the importance of rat chromosome 3 (RNO3) genetic loci on blood pressure elevation, pulse pressure (PP) variability and renal pathology during salt challenge in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHRSP) rat. The aims of this study were to generate a panel of RNO3 congenic sub-strains to genetically dissect the implicated loci and identify positional candidate genes by microarray expression profiling and analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
Method and results: A panel of congenic sub-strains were generated containing Wistar-Kyoto (WKY)-introgressed segments of varying size on the SHRSP genetic background, focused within the first 50 Mbp of RNO3. Haemodynamic profiling during salt challenge demonstrated significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and PP variability in SP.WKYGla3a, SP.WKYGla3c, SP.WKYGla3d and SP.WKYGla3e sub-strains. Only SBP and DBP were significantly reduced during salt challenge in SP.WKYGla3b and SP.WKYGla3f sub-strains, whereas SP.WKYGla3g rats did not differ in haemodynamic response to SHRSP. Those sub-strains demonstrating significantly reduced PP variability during salt challenge also demonstrated significantly reduced renal pathology and proteinuria. Microarray expression profiling prioritized two candidate genes for blood pressure regulation (Dnm1, Tor1b), localized within the common congenic interval shared by SP.WKYGla3d and SP.WKYGla3f strains, and one candidate gene for salt-induced PP variability and renal pathology (Rabgap1), located within the region unique to the SP.WKYGla3d strain. Comparison of next-generation sequencing data identified variants within additional positional genes that are likely to affect protein function.
Conclusion: This study has identified distinct intervals on RNO3-containing genes that may be important for blood pressure regulation and renal pathology during salt challenge
