    Intake of fat-soluble vitamins in the Belgian population : adequacy and contribution of foods, fortified foods and supplements

    A key challenge of public health nutrition is to provide the majority of the population with a sufficient level of micronutrients while preventing high-consumers from exceeding the tolerable upper intake level. Data of the 2014 Belgian food consumption survey (n = 3200) were used to assess fat-soluble vitamin (vitamins A, D, E and K) intake from the consumption of foods, fortified foods and supplements. This study revealed inadequate intakes for vitamin A, from all sources, in the entire Belgian population and possible inadequacies for vitamin D. The prevalence of inadequate intake of vitamin A was lowest in children aged 3-6 (6-7%) and highest in adolescents (girls, 26%; boys, 34-37%). Except for women aged 60-64 years, more than 95% of the subjects had vitamin D intake from all sources below the adequate intake (AI) of 15 mu g/day. The risk for inadequate intake of vitamins K and E was low (median > AI). Belgian fortification and supplementation practices are currently inadequate to eradicate suboptimal intakes of vitamins A and D, but increase median vitamin E intake close to the adequate intake. For vitamin A, a small proportion (1-4%) of young children were at risk of exceeding the upper intake level (UL), while for vitamin D, inclusion of supplements slightly increased the risk for excessive intakes (% > UL) in adult women and young children. The results may guide health authorities when developing population health interventions and regulations to ensure adequate intake of fat-soluble vitamins in Belgium

    Present wetland management has been developed largely on a trial and error basis (Figure 1 ). The effects of many important environmental variables on wetland productivity 253 are not known, consequently management results have not been predictable with a high degree of accuracy (Weller 1981 ). Many marsh management techniques have been described; however, consistently successful marsh management requires a more comprehensive understanding of the structure and function of wetland systems. Although there have been numerous observational studies, major advances in our understanding will result from tightly controlled experimentation which permits the integration of simultaneous research efforts by a number of different scientific disciplines (Reichle 1975, Weller 1978). Because wetlands are temporally dynamic, this type of multi-disciplinary ecosystem analysis must also span a number of years to document the annual and long-term variability within the system. By better understanding the structure and function of wetlands, managers will be better able to design management techniques and strategies suited to their particular situation and therefore realize greater success in manipulating the productivity of these systems (Figure I)

    Herschel HIFI observations of O2_2 toward Orion: special conditions for shock enhanced emission

    We report observations of molecular oxygen (O2_2) rotational transitions at 487 GHz, 774 GHz, and 1121 GHz toward Orion Peak A. The O2 lines at 487 GHz and 774 GHz are detected at velocities of 10-12 km/s with line widths 3 km/s; however, the transition at 1121 GHz is not detected. The observed line characteristics, combined with the results of earlier observations, suggest that the region responsible for the O2_2 emission is 9" (6e16 cm) in size, and is located close to the H2 Peak 1position (where vibrationally-excited H2_2 emission peaks), and not at Peak A, 23" away. The peak O2 column density is 1.1e18/cm2. The line velocity is close to that of 621 GHz water maser emission found in this portion of the Orion Molecular Cloud, and having a shock with velocity vector lying nearly in the plane of the sky is consistent with producing maximum maser gain along the line-of-sight. The enhanced O2_2 abundance compared to that generally found in dense interstellar clouds can be explained by passage of a low-velocity C-shock through a clump with preshock density 2e4/cm3, if a reasonable flux of UV radiation is present. The postshock O2_2 can explain the emission from the source if its line of sight dimension is ~10 times larger than its size on the plane of the sky. The special geometry and conditions required may explain why O2_2 emission has not been detected in the cores of other massive star-forming molecular clouds.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure

    What's on job seekers' social media sites? A content analysis and effects of structure on recruiter judgments and predictive validity

    Many organizational representatives review social media (SM) information (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) when recruiting and assessing job applicants. Despite this, very little empirical data exist concerning the SM information available to organizations or whether assessments of such information are a valid predictor of work outcomes. This multistudy investigation examines several critical issues in this emerging area. In Study 1, we conducted a content analysis of job seekers' Facebook sites (n = 266) and found that these sites often provide demographic variables that U.S. employment laws typically prohibit organizations from using when making personnel decisions (e.g., age, ethnicity, and religion), as well as other personal information that is not work-related (e.g., sexual orientation, marital status). In Study (n = 140), we examined whether job seekers' SM information is related to recruiter evaluations. Results revealed that various types of SM information correlated with recruiter judgments of hireability, including demographic variables (e.g.. gender, marital status), variables organizations routinely assess (e.g.. education. training, and skills). and variables that may be a concern to organizations (e.g., profanity. sexual behavior). In Study 3 (ta = 81), we examined whether structuring SM assessments (e.g., via rater training) affects criterion-related validity. Results showed that structuring SM assessments did not appear to improve the prediction of future job performance or withdrawal intentions. Overall, the present findings suggest that organizations should be cautious about assessing SM information during the staffing process

    Quality of interhospital transport of critically ill patients: a prospective audit

    INTRODUCTION: The aim of transferring a critically ill patient to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary referral centre is to improve prognosis. The transport itself must be as safe as possible and should not pose additional risks. We performed a prospective audit of the quality of interhospital transports to our university hospital-based medical ICU. METHODS: Transfers were undertaken using standard ambulances. On departure and immediately after arrival, the following data were collected: blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation, arterial blood gas analysis, serum lactic acid, plasma haemoglobin concentration, blood glucose, mechanical ventilation settings, use of vasopressor/inotropic drugs, and presence of venous and arterial catheters. Ambulance personnel completed forms describing haemodynamic and ventilatory data during transport. Data were collected by our research nurse and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 100 consecutive transfers of ICU patients over a 14-month period were evaluated. Sixty-five per cent of patients were mechanically ventilated; 38% were on vasoactive drugs. Thirty-seven per cent exhibited an increased number of vital variables beyond predefined thresholds after transport compared with before transport; 34% had an equal number; and 29% had a lower number of vital variables beyond thresholds after transport. The distance of transport did not correlate with the condition on arrival. Six patients died within 24 hours after arrival; vital variables in these patients were not significantly different from those in patients who survived the first 24 hours. ICU mortality was 27%. Adverse events occurred in 34% of transfers; in 50% of these transports, pretransport recommendations given by the intensivist of our ICU were ignored. Approximately 30% of events may be attributed to technical problems. CONCLUSION: On aggregate, the quality of transport in our catchment area carried out using standard ambulances appeared to be satisfactory. However, examination of the data in greater detail revealed a number of preventable events. Further improvement must be achieved by better communication between referring and receiving hospitals, and by strict adherence to checklists and to published protocols. Patients transported between ICUs are still critically ill and should be treated as such

    Genotype-phenotype correlation in adult-onset acid maltase deficiency

    We performed a clinical, biochemical, and genetic study in 16 patients from 11 families with adult‐onset acid maltase deficiency. All patients were compound heterozygotes and carried the IVS1(– 13T→G) transversion on one allele; the second allele harbored either a deletion of a T at position 525 in exon 2 (7 probands, 64%) or a deletion of exon 18 (1 proband, 9%). Detrioration of handicap was related to age, and decrease in vital capacity to duration of the symptomatic stage. Respiratory insufficiency was never the first manifestation. The levels of activity of serum creatine kinase and of β‐glucosidase in peripheral blood cells or muscle were helpful for the diagnosis, but did not have prognostic value. The adult form of acid maltase deficiency appears to be both clinically and genetically rather homogeneous; decrease of β‐glucosidase activity is the final common pathway leading to destruction of muscle fibers and progression of muscle weakness over a period of years.
