Improved Log(gf) Values for Lines of Ti I and Abundance Determinations in the Photospheres of the Sun and Metal-Poor Star HD 84937 (Accurate Transition Probabilities for Ti I)
New atomic transition probability measurements for 948 lines of Ti I are reported. Branching fractions from Fourier transform spectra and from spectra recorded using a 3 m echelle spectrometer are combined with published radiative lifetimes from laser-induced fluorescence measurements to determine these transition probabilities. Generally good agreement is found in comparisons to the NIST Atomic Spectra Database. The new Ti I data are applied to re-determine the Ti abundance in the photospheres of the Sun and metal-poor star HD 84937 using many lines covering a range of wavelength and excitation potential to explore possible non-local thermal equilibrium effects. Improved V I Log(gf) Values and Abundance Determinations in the Photospheres of the Sun and Metal-Poor Star HD 84937
New emission branching fraction measurements for 836 lines of the first spectrum of vanadium (V I) are determined from hollow cathode lamp spectra recorded with the National Solar Observatory 1 m Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and a high-resolution echelle spectrometer. The branching fractions are combined with recently published radiative lifetimes from laser-induced fluorescence measurements to determine accurate absolute atomic transition probabilities for the 836 lines. The FTS data are also used to extract new hyperfine structure A coefficients for 26 levels of neutral vanadium. These new laboratory data are applied to determine the V abundance in the Sun and metal-poor star HD 84937, yielding log epsilon(V) = 3.956 +/- 0.004 (sigma = 0.037) based on 93 V I lines and log epsilon(V) = 1.89 +/- 0.03 (sigma = 0.07) based on nine Vi lines, respectively, using the Holweger-Muller 1D model. The Next Influenza Pandemic: Lessons from Hong Kong, 1997
The 1997 Hong Kong outbreak of an avian influenzalike virus, with 18 proven human cases, many severe or fatal, highlighted the challenges of novel influenza viruses. Lessons from this episode can improve international and national planning for influenza pandemics in seven areas: expanded international commitment to first responses to pandemic threats; surveillance for influenza in key densely populated areas with large live-animal markets; new, economical diagnostic tests not based on eggs; contingency procedures for diagnostic work with highly pathogenic viruses where biocontainment laboratories do not exist; ability of health facilities in developing nations to communicate electronically, nationally and internationally; licenses for new vaccine production methods; and improved equity in supply of pharmaceutical products, as well as availability of basic health services, during a global influenza crisis. The Hong Kong epidemic also underscores the need for national committees and country-specific pandemic plans.publishedVersio
Positive Clinical Psychology and Schema Therapy (ST): the development of the Young Positive Schema Questionnaire (YPSQ) to complement the Young Schema Questionnaire 3 Short Form (YSQ-S3)
Negative schemas have been widely recognized as being linked to psychopathology and mental health, and they are central to the Schema Therapy (ST) model. This study is the first to report on the psychometric properties of the Young Positive Schema Questionnaire (YPSQ). In a combined community sample (Manila, Philippines, n = 559; Bangalore, India, n = 350; Singapore, n = 628), we identified a 56-item 14-factor solution for the YPSQ. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the 14-factor model for data from the Singapore sample as well as 2 other samples; an Eastern sample from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (n =229) and a Western sample from the United States (n = 214). Construct validity was demonstrated with the Young Schema Questionnaire 3 Short Form (YSQ-S3) that measures negative schemas and divergent validity was demonstrated for 11 of the YPSQ subscales with their respective negative schema counterparts. Convergent validity of the 14 subscales of YPSQ was demonstrated with measures of personality dispositions, emotional distress, well-being, trait gratitude, and humor styles. Positive schemas also showed incremental validity over and above negative schemas for these same measures thus demonstrating that both positive and negative schemas are separate constructs that relate in unique ways to mental health. Implications for using both the YPSQ and the YSQ-S3 scales in tandem in ST as well as cultural nuances from the use of Asian samples were discussed
Influence of positional correlations on the propagation of waves in a complex medium with polydisperse resonant scatterers
We present experimental results on a model system for studying wave
propagation in a complex medium exhibiting low frequency resonances. These
experiments enable us to investigate a fundamental question that is relevant
for many materials, such as metamaterials, where low-frequency scattering
resonances strongly influence the effective medium properties. This question
concerns the effect of correlations in the positions of the scatterers on the
coupling between their resonances, and hence on wave transport through the
medium. To examine this question experimentally, we measure the effective
medium wave number of acoustic waves in a sample made of bubbles embedded in an
elastic matrix over a frequency range that includes the resonance frequency of
the bubbles. The effective medium is highly dispersive, showing peaks in the
attenuation and the phase velocity as functions of the frequency, which cannot
be accurately described using the Independent Scattering Approximation (ISA).
This discrepancy may be explained by the effects of the positional correlations
of the scatterers, which we show to be dependent on the size of the scatterers.
We propose a self-consistent approach for taking this "polydisperse
correlation" into account and show that our model better describes the
experimental results than the ISA
HexPak and GradPak: variable-pitch dual-head IFUs for the WIYN 3.5m Telescope Bench Spectrograph
We describe the design, construction, and expected performance of two new
fiber integral field units (IFUs) --- HexPak and GradPak --- for the WIYN 3.5m
Telescope Nasmyth focus and Bench Spectrograph. These are the first IFUs to
provide formatted fiber integral field spectroscopy with simultaneous sampling
of varying angular scales. HexPak and GradPak are in a single cable with a
dual-head design, permitting easy switching between the two different IFU heads
on the telescope without changing the spectrograph feed: the two heads feed a
variable-width double-slit. Each IFU head is comprised of a fixed arrangement
of fibers with a range of fiber diameters. The layout and diameters of the
fibers within each array are scientifically-driven for observations of
galaxies: HexPak is designed to observe face-on spiral or spheroidal galaxies
while GradPak is optimized for edge-on studies of galaxy disks. HexPak is a
hexagonal array of 2.9 arcsec fibers subtending a 40.9 arcsec diameter, with a
high-resolution circular core of 0.94 arcsec fibers subtending 6 arcsec
diameter. GradPak is a 39 by 55 arcsec rectangular array with rows of fibers of
increasing diameter from angular scales of 1.9 arcsec to 5.6 arcsec across the
array. The variable pitch of these IFU heads allows for adequate sampling of

Can Reflection from Grains Diagnose the Albedo?
By radiation transfer models with a realistic power spectra of the projected
density distributions, we show that the optical properties of grains are poorly
constrained by observations of reflection nebulae. The ISM is known to be
hierarchically clumped from a variety of observations (molecules, H I,
far-infrared). Our models assume the albedo and phase parameter of the dust,
the radial optical depth of the sphere averaged over all directions, and random
distributions of the dust within the sphere. The outputs are the stellar
extinction, optical depth, and flux of scattered light as seen from various
viewing angles. Observations provide the extinction and scattered flux from a
particular direction.
Hierarchical geometry has a large effect on the flux of scattered light
emerging from a nebula for a particular extinction of the exciting star. There
is a very large spread in both scattered fluxes and extinctions for any
distribution of dust. Consequently, an observed stellar extinction and
scattered flux can be fitted by a wide range of albedos. With hierarchical
geometry it is not completely safe to determine even relative optical constants
from multiwavelength observations of the same reflection nebula. The geometry
effectively changes with wavelength as the opacity of the clumps varies. Limits
on the implications of observing the same object in various wavelengths are
discussed briefly.
Henry (2002) uses a recipe to determine the scattered flux from a star with a
given extinction. It is claimed to be independent of the geometry. It provides
considerably more scattering than our models, probably leading to an

Assessing direct contributions of morphological awareness and prosodic sensitivity to children’s word reading and reading comprehension
We examined the independent contributions of prosodic sensitivity and morphological awareness to word reading, text reading accuracy, and reading comprehension. We did so in a longitudinal study of English-speaking children (N = 70). At 5 to 7 years of age, children completed the metalinguistic measures along with control measures of phonological awareness and vocabulary. Children completed the reading measures two years later. Morphological awareness, but not prosodic sensitivity made a significant independent contribution to word reading, text reading accuracy and reading comprehension. The effects of morphological awareness on reading comprehension remained after controls for word reading. These results suggest that morphological awareness needs to be considered seriously in models of reading development and that prosodic sensitivity might have primarily indirect relations to reading outcomes.

Personality predictors of levels of forgiveness two and a half years after the transgression
The aim of the present study was to explore whether the domains and facets of the five-factor model of personality predicted motivational states for avoidance and revenge following a transgression at a second temporal point distant from the original transgression. A sample of 438 university students, who reported experiencing a serious transgression against them, completed measures of avoidance and revenge motivations around the transgression and five-factor personality domains and facets at time 1, and measures of avoidance and revenge motivations two and a half years later. The findings suggest that neuroticism, and specifically anger hostility, predicts revenge and avoidance motivation
