    Borrowing Bronfenbrenner: an Argument for Increasing the Intersection of Diverse Theoretical and Applied Models

    We have observed that as the theoretical landscape in behavioral science continues to proliferate and diversify, it is not uncommon that distance between subspecialties emerge, artificially accentuating differences between camps. This may occur at the risk of losing sight of the common ground, and worsening communication between subspecialties. In this paper, we propose conceptual “crosswalking” as a means to preserve interdisciplinary communication within the behavioral sciences. This is illustrated using Bronfenbrenner\u27s Person-Process-Context-Time (PPCT) Model, mapped onto therapeutic modalities with a focus on ecological systems.     DETECTION AND DIAGNOSTICS OF A CORONAL SHOCK WAVE DRIVEN BY A PARTIAL-HALO CORONAL MASS EJECTION ON 2000 JUNE 28

    A fast partial-halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed on 2000 June 28 by instruments on the SOHO spacecraft. The CME leading edge and filamentary cold core were detected over the northwest limb at 2.32 R? by the SOHO UV Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS). The broad profile of the O?VI ?1032 line gives evidence of a shock front at the leading edge, supporting the identification of white-light CME sharp leading edges as fast-mode shocks. Line-of-sight speeds are as high as 1500 km s-1, comparable to the projected speed obtained from LASCO. Pumping of the O?VI ?1032 by Ly? (v = 1810 km s-1) and of O?VI ?1037 by O?VI ?1032 (v = 1648 km s-1) were detected, which provide diagnostics of outflow speed and density. The angle of the ejecta with the plane of the sky is obtained, combining the projected speed from LASCO with the line-of sight-speed, and varies between 7? and 46?. In the latter case the projected height of 2.32 R? was at an actual heliocentric distance of 3.6 R?. An associated solar energetic particle (SEP) event was observed at the L1 point following this CME. The abundance and charge-state data are consistent with a gradual shock-accelerated SEP event. A type II radio burst was observed at the same time the shock front was detected by UVCS

    Sporadic Infection of Wolbachia

    This study examines the distribution and invasion dynamics of Wolbachia in a recently established Formica fusca population. Preliminary data revealed the intermittent infection of Wolbachia across colonies, providing the opportunity to test for ecological factors affecting the acquisition and spread of the parasite. Only 35% of colonies are infected in this population. Both infected and noninfected nests have similar dispersion patterns that approximate a random distribution, suggesting that transmission of Wolbachia between adjacent colonies is not common. There is no difference in the infection rate between workers and brood, indicating that workers are not actively eliminating the infection. Our results show no significant association between Wolbachia infection and nest size; however, infected colonies tend to be larger than noninfected colonies. Finally, Wolbachia infection was not associated with queen number. Overall, our results suggest no large fitness differences between infected and noninfected colonies, although small fitness effects cannot be ruled out for this population

    Effects of antenatal betamethasone on preterm human and mouse ductus arteriosus: comparison with baboon data.

    BackgroundAlthough studies involving preterm infants ≤34 weeks gestation report a decreased incidence of patent ductus arteriosus after antenatal betamethasone, studies involving younger gestation infants report conflicting results.MethodsWe used preterm baboons, mice, and humans (≤276/7 weeks gestation) to examine betamethasone's effects on ductus gene expression and constriction both in vitro and in vivo.ResultsIn mice, betamethasone increased the sensitivity of the premature ductus to the contractile effects of oxygen without altering the effects of other contractile or vasodilatory stimuli. Betamethasone's effects on oxygen sensitivity could be eliminated by inhibiting endogenous prostaglandin/nitric oxide signaling. In mice and baboons, betamethasone increased the expression of several developmentally regulated genes that mediate oxygen-induced constriction (K+ channels) and inhibit vasodilator signaling (phosphodiesterases). In human infants, betamethasone increased the rate of ductus constriction at all gestational ages. However, in infants born ≤256/7 weeks gestation, betamethasone's contractile effects were only apparent when prostaglandin signaling was inhibited, whereas at 26-27 weeks gestation, betamethasone's contractile effects were apparent even in the absence of prostaglandin inhibitors.ConclusionsWe speculate that betamethasone's contractile effects may be mediated through genes that are developmentally regulated. This could explain why betamethasone's effects vary according to the infant's developmental age at birth

    On the Estimation of Solar Energetic Particle Injection Timing from Onset Times near Earth

    We examine the accuracy of a common technique for estimating the start time of solar energetic particle injection based on a linear fit to the observed onset time versus 1/(particle velocity). This is based on a concept that the first arriving particles move directly along the magnetic field with no scattering. We check this by performing numerical simulations of the transport of solar protons between 2 and 2000 MeV from the Sun to the Earth, for several assumptions regarding interplanetary scattering and the duration of particle injection, and analyzing the results using the inverse velocity fit. We find that in most cases, the onset times align close to a straight line as a function of inverse velocity. Despite this, the estimated injection time can be in error by several minutes. Also, the estimated path length can deviate greatly from the actual path length along the interplanetary magnetic field. The major difference between the estimated and actual path lengths implies that the first arriving particles cannot be viewed as moving directly along the interplanetary magnetic field.Comment: 19 pages, 3 Postscript figures.     The Critical Juncture Concept’s Evolving Capacity to Explain Policy Change

    This article examines the evolution of our understanding of the critical junctures concept. The concept finds its origins in historical intuitionalism, being employed in the context of path dependence to account for sudden and jarring institutional or policy changes. We argue that the concept and the literature surrounding it—now incorporating ideas, discourse, and agency—have gradually become more comprehensive and nuanced as historical institutionalism was followed by ideational historical institutionalism and constructivist and discursive institutionalism. The prime position of contingency has been supplanted by the role of ideas and agency in explaining critical junctures and other instances of less than transformative change. Consequently, the concept is now capable of providing more comprehensive explanations for policy change

    Lipopolysaccharide-pretreated plasmacytoid dendritic cells ameliorate experimental chronic kidney disease

    Plasmacytoid dendritic cells play important roles in inducing immune tolerance, preventing allograft rejection, and regulating immune responses in both autoimmune disease and graft-versus-host disease. In order to evaluate a possible protective effect of plasmacytoid dendritic cells against renal inflammation and injury, we purified these cells from mouse spleens and adoptively transferred lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated cells, modified ex vivo, into mice with adriamycin nephropathy. These LPS-treated cells localized to the kidney cortex and the lymph nodes draining the kidney, and protected the kidney from injury during adriamycin nephropathy. Glomerulosclerosis, tubular atrophy, interstitial expansion, proteinuria, and creatinine clearance were significantly reduced in mice with adriamycin nephropathy subsequently treated with LPS-activated plasmacytoid dendritic cells as compared to the kidney injury in mice given naive plasmacytoid dendritic cells. In addition, LPS-pretreated cells, but not naive plasmacytoid dendritic cells, convert CD4+CD25− T cells into Foxp3+ regulatory T cells and suppress the proinflammatory cytokine production of endogenous renal macrophages. This may explain their ability to protect against renal injury in adriamycin nephropathy

    Depressive symptoms and smoking among young Turkish and Moroccan ethnic minority groups in the Netherlands: a cross-sectional study

    ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Although evidence indicates a strong association between depressive symptoms and smoking among host and migrant adults, less is known about this relationship among young ethnic minority groups in Europe. This paper aims to assess the relationship between depressive symptoms and smoking among young Turkish and Moroccan migrants in the Netherlands. METHODS: Multiple logistic regression analyses was used to analyze cross-sectional data from a sample of 364 Turkish and Moroccan migrants aged 15 to 24 years. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to measure the presence of clinically significant depressive symptoms. Smoking behavior was measured by a number of questions. RESULTS: Of the respondents, 22% were smokers and 33% had depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher in smokers (42.9%) than in nonsmokers (29.5%). Respondents with depressive symptoms had increased odds of smoking even after adjusting for socioeconomic and cultural factors (OR = 2.68, 95% CI = 1.45-4.97). CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with smoking behavior in young Turkish and Moroccan migrants. In addition to other acknowledged factors, depressive symptoms should also be considered in relation to the smoking behavior of this group. Intervention programs for smoking behavior should take depressive symptoms into account for young Turkish and Moroccan migrant

    The courage to change: Patient perceptions of 12-Step fellowships

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>From a health services perspective, peer-based resources merit special attention. Participation in self-help fellowships, like the Twelve Step Groups (TSGs), have been shown to improve outcomes of patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and they represent a valuable adjunct to the SUD treatment system. This study investigated the relationship between patient perceptions of TSGs and the intent to participate in TSGs after receiving detoxification treatment.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We included 139 patients that entered a detoxification unit (detox) in Kristiansand, Norway. We analyzed factors associated with the intention to participate in TSGs post-discharge with contingency tables and ordinal regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Forty-eight percent of patients had participated in TSGs before entering detox. Respondents saw more advantages than disadvantages in TSG participation, but only 40% of patients showed high intentions of participating in TSGs post-discharge. A high intention to participate in TSGs was most strongly correlated with the notion that participation in TSGs could instill the courage to change. In a multivariate analysis, the perception that TSGs were beneficial was the strongest factor related to a high intention of TSG participation after treatment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings increased the understanding of factors most likely to influence decisions to attend TSGs in SUD treatment contexts with uncommon TSG participation. Our results suggested that the majority of patients may be sufficiently influenced by highlighting the potential gains of TSG participation. Treatment programs that do not focus on self-help group attendance during and after treatment should consider implementing facilitative measures to enhance utilization of these fellowships.</p
