Merge Problems with High Speed Sorters

    Get PDF
To meet customer demands on distribution the necessity of sorting systems for unit loads in regard to quantity and capacity is growing up constantly. Due to that, manufactures offer powerful sorting machines with a capacity up to 15.000 pieces per hour. Those machines are for instance Crossbelt or Tilt-Tray sorters. The output of these sorters is calculated by the equation of throughput. The point of interest is the merge, referring to the overall efficiency of the single sorter. The motion sequence during merging has to be absolutely quick and precise to achieve exact positioning using minimized distances of the single items and high velocities on the main conveyer. Actual research activities at the Institute of Logistics Engineering at the Technical University of Graz will provide improved solutions for this problem. The mathematical and mechanical models are representing a way how to describe and optimize the merging of single piece items. A basic example will show the transactions while merging in detail and the results will be discussed. Furthermore a layout proposal to simplify and increase the merging of goods will be presented

Monte Carlo Algorithm to Study Performance Parameters of Shuttle Systems

Shuttle systems provide alternative solutions in storage technology. Ma-terial flow analyses of these systems are extensive due to complex interac-tion of several shuttles and lift elements. Besides classic cycle time calcu-lation, it also requires advanced analyzing methods. At the Institute of Logistics Engineering (ITL), Graz University of Technology, an innovative, software-based approach has been developed to investigate the performance of shuttle systems. This approach is based on the Monte Carlo method. The software tool takes into account a variety of different systems and operating parameters to reflect operative behavior of shuttle systems

Hybrid electroactive morphing at real scale - application to Airbus A320 wings

Electroactive Morphing is a multidisciplinary axis, combining aerodynamics, innovative materials and mechatronics. This concept consists in improving the aerodynamic performance by the use of actuators deforming the airfoil of an aircraft in real time. Supported by Airbus, the modeling, design and implementation of a small scale demonstrator is a first step. Based on an A320 wing profile, it is equipped with actuators for hybrid electroactive morphing: large deformations at low speeds by Shape Memory Alloys are associated with the integration at the trailing edge of piezoelectric actuators allowing high operating frequencies at lower amplitude. A second step of the thesis is dedicated to wind tunnel tests. The measurement of forces and the Particle Image Velocimetries allow for the understanding of the flow and turbulence physics. The study of this fluid-structure-actuator coupling presents the effects of the morphism by independent actuation; then the nonlinear coupling of the hybrid actuation. The third step is the transition to a realistic scale of actuators, by designing an "electro-morphed" macro-actuator. An optimization sizing approach is proposed. Based on new actuation technologies, a prototype of such a macro-actuator is then designed to be tested

On the multidisciplinary control and sensing of a smart hybrid morphing wing

Morphing wing technology is of great interest for improving the aerodynamic performance of future aircraft. A morphing wing prototype using both surface embedded Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and piezoelectric macro fiber composite (MFC) actuators has been designed for wind tunnel experiments. This smart wing is a mechatronic system that contains embedded sensors to measure the surrounding flow and control the actuators. This article will focus on the control of the cambering system which is achieved using a group of nested control loops as well as on the perspective of a novel control strategy using in-situ temperature measurements. It will be shown that by exploiting the inherent hysteretic properties of the SMAs cambering a significant reduction in power consumption is possible by appropriately tailoring the control strategy. Furthermore, by comparing the post-processed pressure signals recorded during the wind tunnel experiments to the aerodynamic performance gains a perspective for a novel in-situ control will be shown
