Quarkonium production at the LHC: a phenomenological analysis of surprisingly simple data patterns
The LHC quarkonium production measurements reveal a startling observation:
the J/, (2S), and (nS) -differential cross sections are compatible with one universal momentum
scaling pattern. Considering also the absence of strong polarizations of
directly and indirectly produced S-wave mesons, we are led to the conclusion
that there is currently no evidence of a dependence of the partonic production
mechanisms on the quantum numbers and mass of the final state. The experimental
observations supporting this universal production scenario are remarkably
significant, as shown by a new analysis approach, unbiased by specific
theoretical calculations of partonic cross sections, which are only considered
a posteriori, in comparisons with the data-driven results.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Model-independent constraints on the shape parameters of dilepton angular distributions
The coefficients determining the dilepton decay angular distribution of
vector particles obey certain positivity constraints and a rotation-invariant
identity. These relations are a direct consequence of the covariance properties
of angular momentum eigenstates and are independent of the production
mechanism. The Lam-Tung relation can be derived as a particular case, simply
recognizing that the Drell-Yan dilepton is always produced transversely
polarized with respect to one or more quantization axes. The dilepton angular
distribution continues to be characterized by a frame-independent identity also
when the Lam-Tung relation is violated. Moreover, the violation can be easily
characterized by measuring a one-dimensional distribution depending on one
shape coefficient.Comment: 7 page
Governance systems, when addressing post-disaster action, play an important role in minimizing the community’s vulnerability in future disruptive events. The literature describes how post-disaster actions towards resistance-resilience measures are often implemented, shifting to adaptive-resilience approaches as a second concern, and disregarding resilience-transformative strategies. Two consecutive wildfires in the Centro Region (Portugal), in 2017, cut off access to the Services of General Interest (SGIs) and knocked off-balance the socioeconomic territorial structure and identity (the main impact was 116 mortal victims). In this paper, the media coverage of the phenomena during the 12 months following the disaster is analysed using a sample of 150 news articles published in two newspapers. The public discourses are indicative of the overall importance given to the impact and to the responses based on resistance-resilience measures. Moreover, the theoretical and practical challenges for the policy design and organization of the governance systems in post-disaster contexts is discussed
Universal kinematic scaling as a probe of factorized long-distance effects in high-energy quarkonium production
Dimensional analysis reveals general kinematic scaling rules for the momentum, mass, and energy dependence of Drell–Yan and quarkonium cross sections. Their application to mid-rapidity LHC data provides strong experimental evidence supporting the validity of the factorization ansatz, a cornerstone of non-relativistic QCD, still lacking theoretical demonstration. Moreover, data-driven patterns emerge for the factorizable long-distance bound-state formation effects, including a remarkable correlation between the S-wave quarkonium cross sections and their binding energies. Assuming that this scaling can be extended to the P-wave case, we obtain precise predictions for the not yet measured feed-down fractions, thereby providing a complete picture of the charmonium and bottomonium feed-down structure. This is crucial information for quantitative interpretations of quarkonium production data, including studies of the suppression patterns measured in nucleus-nucleus collisions.Peer Reviewe
Newton, Malebranche and the inverted proportion of Voltaire
This study aims to investigate the idea of God present in Voltaire’s texts from the Cirey period and to compare them with a specific set of texts from his old age period, in order to note the nuances and changes regarding this central concept of the author’s metaphysics. In this process, we will note how Newton’s philosophy was supplanted by that of Malebranche as Voltaire’s main source. We will also examine the consequences this change will cause in Voltaire’s metaphysical theory. Keywords: God, metaphysics, Enlightenment

Estimating net migrations at regional and age-specific group levels
Following the Mediterranean Region trend, the Portuguese peripheral NUTS III regions are simultaneously affected by a human desertification and population ageing. In order to analyse the requirements to revert this process, DEMOSPIN project - Economically Sustainable DEMOgraphy - ReverSing Decline in Peripheral RegIoNs - is developing a joint demographic-economic model, where migrations are the link between the economic and demographic dynamics. The developed model estimates net migration for each age group, considering three kinds of migrants: i) the active age groups migrants (20-65 years old), responsive to job opportunities; ii) the older age groups (more than 65 years old), where migrations reverse the movements occurred in the past, and iii) the youngest age groups (less than 20 years old) which follow the parents migrations or are driven by opportunities to study elsewhere. This model was based on the census data for 1991, 2001 and 2011 and was developed to estimate migration based i) on socioeconomic factors: creation or destruction of employment (split in primary and nor primary sector), GDP per capita and demographic potential and ii) on the ancient migration, occurred 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years ago (for example, the migration of the 65 to 70 years old population related to migration of 25 to 30 years old 40 years ago). A satellite model was developed for migrants with ages below 20 years old where movement is related to parent?s migration patterns. The coefficients of the regression model are specific to each age group and sex. The results show a very high adjustment for younger groups, between migration and socioeconomic drivers. For people older than 40 years, such adjustment is lower but it is partially compensated by the effect of migrations occurred in the past. Globally, the model provides an accurate description of NUTS III migration patterns. This paper will present, at first, the migration patterns of the Portuguese peripheral regions and the theoretical basis of migration estimation models and its determinants. Afterwards, it will describe the methodology underlying the model construction and the obtained results, providing a deep understanding of the migration dynamics of the regions under study
