Stochastic procedure to extract and to integrate landslide susceptibility maps: an example of mountainous watershed in Taiwan
International audienceThe Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) is here incorporated into a deterministic landslide model (SHALSTAB) to generate 4000 landslide susceptibility maps which enclose various combinations of full range parameters. Furthermore, an improved index is adopted into GLUE as a criterion to measure model performance, and through that, 200 maps holding top 5% performance are retrieved. Proper ranges for parameters are obtained through GLUE yet they only perform well if combined appropriately. The 200 better maps are overlapped to construct an integrated landslide susceptibility map. Instead of giving a single parameter set or a single susceptibility map, the merit of extracting and integrating procedure is to envelope uncertainties inherited in model structure and input parameters. Bias due to subjective parameter input is potentially reduced. The entire procedure is applied to the Chi-Jia-Wan, a mountainous watershed in Taiwan. The integrated map shows high-risk area (>50% predicted landslide probability) only occupies 16.4% of the entire watershed while able to correctly identify 60% of the actual landslides. For areas above 2100 m height the map is even more successful (projects 77 of the 98 actual landslides). Interactions among parameters are discussed to highlight the unsolvable equifinality problem and improperness of presenting a single model result
Aging-Induced Dynamics for Statically Indeterminate System
Statically indeterminate systems are experimentally demonstrated to be in
fact dynamical at the microscopic scale. Take the classic ladder-wall problem,
for instance. Depending on the Young's modulus of the wall, it may take up to
twenty minutes before its weight saturates. This finding is shown to be shared
by other statically indeterminate systems, such as a granule silo and a beam
with three support points. We believe that the aging effect is responsible for
this surprising phenomenon because it can be correlated with the evolution of
microscopic contact area with the wall and floor. Finally, a heuristic and
simple method is introduced that can uniquely determine and analytically solve
the saturated weight without invoking detailed material properties.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Gingyo-San Enhances Immunity and Potentiates Infectious Bursal Disease Vaccination
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of Gingyo-san (GGS), a traditional Chinese medical formula, on peripheral lymphocyte proliferation and serum antibody titers in chickens vaccinated against the infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus. Treatment groups were fed one of three doses of GGS in their diet (0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%, w/w), and the IBD vaccine was administered at 1 and 3 weeks of age. At Weeks 8, 12 and 16, changes in serum IBD antibody titers were measured via the micro-method and T cell proliferation. In gene expression experiments, GGS-treated peripheral T lymphocytes were stimulated with concanavalin A (ConA) for 24 h. The mRNA expression of interleukin-2 (IL-2), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) was determined using a semi-quantitative RT-PCR assay. The results showed that a low dose of GGS could significantly raise the antibody titers. Medium and high doses of GGS enhanced IL-2 and IFN-γ production. GGS altered the expression of IL-4 and IL-12 in T lymphocytes. CD4+ T lymphocyte development was also skewed towards the Th1 phenotype. GGS enhanced cell-mediated immunity and augmented the effects of IBD vaccination in strengthening subsequent anti-viral responses
A QoS-Guaranteed Coverage Precedence Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks
For mission-critical applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) involving extensive battlefield surveillance, medical healthcare, etc., it is crucial to have low-power, new protocols, methodologies and structures for transferring data and information in a network with full sensing coverage capability for an extended working period. The upmost mission is to ensure that the network is fully functional providing reliable transmission of the sensed data without the risk of data loss. WSNs have been applied to various types of mission-critical applications. Coverage preservation is one of the most essential functions to guarantee quality of service (QoS) in WSNs. However, a tradeoff exists between sensing coverage and network lifetime due to the limited energy supplies of sensor nodes. In this study, we propose a routing protocol to accommodate both energy-balance and coverage-preservation for sensor nodes in WSNs. The energy consumption for radio transmissions and the residual energy over the network are taken into account when the proposed protocol determines an energy-efficient route for a packet. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol is able to increase the duration of the on-duty network and provide up to 98.3% and 85.7% of extra service time with 100% sensing coverage ratio comparing with LEACH and the LEACH-Coverage-U protocols, respectively
Extractive Bioconversion of Gamma-Cyclodextrin and Recycling of Cyclodextrin Glycosyltransferase in Liquid Biphasic System Using Thermo-Separating Polymer
An extractive bioconversion conducted on soluble starch with cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) enzyme in ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EOPO)/potassium phosphates liquid biphasic system (LBS) to extract gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) was examined. A range of EOPO (with potassium phosphates) molecular weights was screen to investigate the effect of the latter on the partioning efficency of CGTase and γ-CD. The results show that the optimal top phase γ-CD yield (74.4%) was reached in 35.0% (w/w) EOPO 970 and 10.0% (w/w) potassium phosphate with 2.0% (w/w) sodium chloride. A theoretical explanation for the effect of NaCl on γ-CD was also presented. After a 2 h bioconversion process, a total of 0.87 mg/mL concentration of γ-CD was produced in the EOPO/ phosphates LBS top phase. After the extraction of top phase from LBS, four continuous repetitive batches were successfully conducted with relative CGTase activity of 1.00, 0.86, 0.45, and 0.40 respectively
Production of y-cyclodextrin by Bacillus cereus cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase using extractive bioconversion in polymer-salt aqueous two-phase system
Aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) extractive bioconversion provides a technique which integrates bioconversion and purification into a single step process. Extractive bioconversion of gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) from soluble starch with cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase, EC 2.4.1.19) enzyme derived from Bacillus cereus was evaluated using polyethylene glycol (PEG)/potassium phosphate based on ATPS. The optimum condition was attained in the ATPS constituted of 30.0% (w/w) PEG 3000 g/mol and 7.0% (w/w) potassium phosphate. A γ-CD concentration of 1.60 mg/mL with a 19% concentration ratio was recovered after 1 h bioconversion process. The γ-CD was mainly partitioned to the top phase (YT = 81.88%), with CGTase partitioning in the salt-rich bottom phase (KCGTase = 0.51). Repetitive batch processes of extractive bioconversion were successfully recycled three times, indicating that this is an environmental friendly and a cost saving technique for γ-CD production and purification
Relation of early-stage renal insufficiency and cardiac structure and function in a large population of asymptomatic Asians: a cross-sectional cohort analysis
BackgroundFew studies have addressed early-stage kidney disease and preclinical cardiac structural and functional abnormalities from a large-scale Asian population. Further, the extent to which measures of myocardial function and whether these associations may vary by testing various formulas of renal insufficiency remains largely unexplored.ObjectiveTo explore the associations among renal function, proteinuria, and left ventricular (LV) structural and diastolic functional alterations.DesignA cross-sectional, retrospective cohort study.SettingRegistered data from a cardiovascular health screening program at MacKay Memorial Hospital from June 2009 to December 2012.ParticipantsAsymptomatic individuals.MeasurementsRenal function was evaluated in terms of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by both MDRD and CKD-EPI formulas and severity of proteinuria, which were further related to cardiac structure, diastolic function (including LV e’ by tissue Doppler), and circulating N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level.ResultsAmong 4942 participants (65.8% men, mean age 49.4 ± 11.2 years), the mean CKD-EPI/MDRD eGFR was 90.6 ± 15.7 and 88.5 ± 16.9 ml/min/1.73m2, respectively. Lower eGFR, estimated either by the MDRD or CKD-EPI method, and higher proteinuria were significantly associated with lower LV e’ and higher NT-proBNP (all p<0.05) even after adjusting for clinical covariates. In general, lower eGFR estimated by CKD-EPI and MDRD displayed similar impacts on worsening e’ and NT-proBNP, rather than E/e’, in multivariate models. Finally, lower LV e’ or higher composite diastolic score, rather than E/e’, demonstrated remarkable interaction with eGFR level estimated by either CKD-EPI or MDRD on circulating NT-proBNP level (p interaction <0.05).LimitationsProteinuria was estimated using a urine dipstick rather than more accurately by the urine protein-to-creatinine ratio. Also, pertaining drug history and clinical hard outcomes were lacking.ConclusionBoth clinical estimate of renal insufficiency by eGFR or proteinuria, even in a relatively early clinical stage, were tightly linked to impaired cardiac diastolic relaxation and circulating NT-proBNP level. Elevation of NT-proBNP with worsening renal function may be influenced by impaired myocardial relaxation
Association of Female Menopause With Atrioventricular Mechanics and Outcomes
BACKGROUND: Despite known sex differences in cardiac structure and function, little is known about how menopause and estrogen associate with atrioventricular mechanics and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To study how, sex differences, loss of estrogen in menopause and duration of menopause, relate to atrioventricular mechanics and outcomes. METHODS: Among 4051 asymptomatic adults (49.8 ± 10.8 years, 35%women), left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) mechanics were assessed using speckle-tracking. RESULTS: Post-menopausal (vs. pre-menopausal) women had similar LV ejection fraction but reduced GLS, reduced PALS, increased LA stiffness, higher LV sphericity and LV torsion (all p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis showed menopause to be associated with greater LV sphericity (0.02, 95%CI 0.01, 0.03), higher indexed LV mass (LVMi), lower mitral e’, lower LV GLS (0.37, 95%CI 0.04–0.70), higher LV torsion, larger LA volume, worse PALS (∼2.4-fold) and greater LA stiffness (0.028, 95%CI 0.01–0.05). Increasing years of menopause was associated with further reduction in GLS, markedly worse LA mechanics despite greater LV sphericity and higher torsion. Lower estradiol levels correlated with more impaired LV diastolic function, impaired LV GLS, greater LA stiffness, and increased LV sphericity and LV torsion (all p < 0.05). Approximately 5.5% (37/669) of post-menopausal women incident HF over 2.9 years of follow-up. Greater LV sphericity [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.04, 95%CI 1.00–1.07], impaired GLS (aHR 0.87, 95%CI 0.78–0.97), reduced peak left atrial longitudinal strain (PALS, aHR 0.94, 95%CI 0.90–0.99) and higher LA stiffness (aHR 10.5, 95%CI 1.69–64.6) were independently associated with the primary outcome of HF hospitalizations in post-menopause. Both PALS < 23% (aHR:1.32, 95%CI 1.01–3.49) and GLS < 16% (aHR:5.80, 95%CI 1.79–18.8) remained prognostic for the incidence of HF in post-menopausal women in dichotomous analyses, even after adjusting for confounders. Results were consistent with composite outcomes of HF hospitalizations and 1-year all-cause mortality as well. CONCLUSION: Menopause was associated with greater LV/LA remodeling and reduced LV longitudinal and LA function in women. The cardiac functional deficit with menopause and lower estradiol levels, along with their independent prognostic value post-menopause, may elucidate sex differences in heart failure further
