Physics of the rhythmic applause
We discuss in detail a human scale example of the synchronization phenomenon,
namely the dynamics of the rhythmic applause. After a detailed experimental
investigation, we describe the phenomenon with an approach based on the
classical Kuramoto model. Computer simulations based on the theoretical
assumptions, reproduce perfectly the observed dynamics. We argue that a
frustration present in the system is responsible for the interesting interplay

Changes in ozone and PM2.5 in Europe during the period of 1990-2030 : Role of reductions in land and ship emissions
Air pollution is among the top threats to human health and ecosystems despite the substantial decrease in anthropogenic emissions. Meanwhile, the role of ship emissions on air quality is becoming increasingly important with the growing maritime transport and less strict regulations. In this study, we modeled the air quality in Europe between 1990 and 2030 with ten-year intervals, using the regional air quality model CAMx version 6.50, to investigate the changes in the past (1990-2010) as well as the effects of different land and ship emission scenarios in the future (2020,2030). The modeled mean ozone levels decreased slightly during the first decade but then started increasing again especially in polluted areas. Results from the future scenarios suggest that by 2030 the peak ozone would decrease, leading to a decrease in the days exceeding the maximum daily 8-h average ozone (MDA8) limit values (60 ppb) by 51% in southern Europe relative to 1990. The model results show a decrease of 56% (6.3 mu g m(-3)) in PM2.5 concentrations from 1990 to 2030 under current legislation, mostly due to a large drop in sulfate (representing up to 44% of the total PM2.5 decrease during 1990-2000) while nitrate concentrations were predicted to go down with an increasing rate (10% of total PM2.5 decrease during 1990-2000 while 36% during 2020-2030). The ship emissions if reduced according to the maximum technically feasible reduction (MTFR) scenario were predicted to contribute up to 19% of the decrease in the PM2.5 concentrations over land between 2010 and 2030. Ship emission reductions according to the MTFR scenario would lead to a decrease in the days with MDA8 exceeding EU limits by 24-28% (10-14 days) around the coastal regions. The results obtained in our study show the increasing importance of ship emission reductions, after a relatively large decrease in land emissions was achieved in Europe. (c) 2020 The Authors. Measurement of Trace I-129 Concentrations in CsI Powder and Organic Liquid Scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of
major concern in low-background experiments. Procedures were devised to measure
trace concentrations of I-129 in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic
liquid scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) which leads to
improvement in sensitivities by several orders of magnitude over other methods.
No evidence of their existence in these materials were observed. Limits of < 6
X 10^{-13} g/g and < 2.6 X 10^{-17} g/g on the contaminations of I-129 in CsI
and liquid scintillator, respectively, were derived.These are the first results
in a research program whose goals are to develop techniques to measure trace

Symmetry in the insulator - quantum Hall - insulator transitions observed in a Ge/SiGe quantum well
We examine the magnetic field driven insulator-quantum Hall-insulator
transitions of the two dimensional hole gas in a Ge/SiGe quantum well. We
observe direct transitions between low and high magnetic field insulators and
the quantum Hall state. With increasing magnetic field, the transitions
from insulating to quantum Hall and quantum Hall to insulating are very similar
with respect to their transport properties. We address the temperature
dependence around the transitions and show that the characteristic energy scale
for the high field transition is larger.Comment: 4 page
Dynamical aspects of mean field plane rotators and the Kuramoto model
The Kuramoto model has been introduced in order to describe synchronization
phenomena observed in groups of cells, individuals, circuits, etc... We look at
the Kuramoto model with white noise forces: in mathematical terms it is a set
of N oscillators, each driven by an independent Brownian motion with a constant
drift, that is each oscillator has its own frequency, which, in general,
changes from one oscillator to another (these frequencies are usually taken to
be random and they may be viewed as a quenched disorder). The interactions
between oscillators are of long range type (mean field). We review some results
on the Kuramoto model from a statistical mechanics standpoint: we give in
particular necessary and sufficient conditions for reversibility and we point
out a formal analogy, in the N to infinity limit, with local mean field models
with conservative dynamics (an analogy that is exploited to identify in
particular a Lyapunov functional in the reversible set-up). We then focus on
the reversible Kuramoto model with sinusoidal interactions in the N to infinity
limit and analyze the stability of the non-trivial stationary profiles arising
when the interaction parameter K is larger than its critical value K_c. We
provide an analysis of the linear operator describing the time evolution in a
neighborhood of the synchronized profile: we exhibit a Hilbert space in which
this operator has a self-adjoint extension and we establish, as our main
result, a spectral gap inequality for every K>K_c.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Modeling the effect of reduced traffic due to COVID-19 measures on air quality using a chemical transport model : Impacts on the Po Valley and the Swiss Plateau regions
Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Author(s).The spread of COVID-19 has posed serious challenges for the global communities. To reduce the circulation of the infection, governmental bodies have imposed different lockdown measures at various levels of complexity and duration. As a result, a substantial reduction in mobility might have important, yet unknown, implications for air quality. In this study, we applied the Comprehensive Air quality Model with eXtensions (CAMx) to investigate potential changes in air quality and its chemical composition over northern Italy and Switzerland during periods when lockdown measures were enforced. Our results indicated that lockdown measures reduced nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air concentrations by up to 46% and 25% in the Po Valley and Swiss Plateau regions, respectively, whereas fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air concentrations were reduced only by up to 10% and 6%. This highlights the importance of other emission categories other than traffic for the total PM2.5 levels. The analysis of the PM2.5 components indicated that elemental carbon (EC) and particulate nitrate (NO3 -) were the species most affected by the lockdown measures, whereas a mild increase in the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) concentrations occurred in the Po Valley, and specifically over the metropolitan area of Milan. Our results indicated that an increase in the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere, i.e. in the cOH and cNO3 radicals, was mainly responsible for the mild increase in SOA concentrations.Peer reviewe
An Interactive Approach Based on Alternative Achievement Scale and Alternative Comprehensive Scale for Multiple Attribute Decision Making under Linguistic Environment
The aim of this paper is to develop an interactive approach for multiple attribute decision making with incomplete
weight information under linguistic environment. Some of the concepts are defined, such as the distance between
two 2-tuple linguistic variables, the expectation level of alternative, the achievement scale, the alternative
comprehensive scale under linguistic environment. Based on these concepts, we establish some linear programming
models, through which the decision maker interacts with the analyst. Furthermore, we establish a practical
interactive approach for selecting the most desirable alternative(s). The interactive process can be realized by
giving and revising the achievement scale and comprehensive scale of alternatives till the achievement scale and
the comprehensive scale are achieved to the decision maker’s request. Pairing symmetry of superconducting graphene
The possibility of intrinsic superconductivity in alkali-coated graphene
monolayers has been recently suggested theoretically. Here, we derive the
possible pairing symmetries of a carbon honeycomb lattice and discuss their
phase diagram. We also evaluate the superconducting local density of states
(LDOS) around an isolated impurity. This is directly related to scanning
tunneling microscopy experiments, and may evidence the occurrence of
