Exploring the feasibility of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) as a mechanism for school culture change to improve mental health
Adolescence is a key time to prevent or reduce poor mental health outcomes. Supportive school environments play an important role in this, and the concept of health-promoting schools have been supported globally. Participatory action research (PAR) combines theory, practice, action, and reflection by developing practical solutions to address concerns and issues within communities. Running four PAR groups across three secondary schools, we explored the feasibility of using the approach as a mechanism for bringing about culture change and improving mental health. We undertook interviews and focus groups with students (n = 24), school staff (n = 11), facilitators (n = 3), and parents/carers (n = 2). Findings are organised under five key headings: 1) Establishing PAR groups, and the PAR cycle; 2) PAR group impact; 3) Facilitators of PAR success; 4) Barriers to PAR success; 5) Future recommendations. This study demonstrated the feasibility of PAR as a tool to improve school culture. Students participating in PAR were engaged, passionate, and motivated to influence and transform school culture to improve mental health. Future research should aim to trial the PAR approach on a larger scale, to determine whether the barriers and facilitators of PAR success identified here are relevant and transferable to schools in other contexts, and to measure the impact of such initiatives on mental health outcomes
A systems map of the determinants of child health inequalities in England at the local level
Children and young people in the UK have worse health outcomes than in many similar western countries and child health inequalities are persistent and increasing. Systems thinking has emerged as a promising approach to addressing complex public health issues. We report on a systems approach to mapping the determinants of child health inequalities at the local level in England for young people aged 0–25, and describe the resulting map. Qualitative group concept mapping workshops were held in two contrasting English local authorities with a range of stakeholders: professionals (N = 35); children and young people (N = 33) and carers (N = 5). Initial area maps were developed, and augmented using data from qualitative interviews with professionals (N = 16). The resulting local maps were reviewed and validated by expert stakeholders in each area (N = 9; N = 35). Commonalities between two area-specific system maps (and removal of locality-specific factors) were used to develop a map that could be applied in any English local area. Two rounds of online survey (N = 21; N = 8) experts in public health, local governance and systems science refined the final system map displaying the determinants of child health inequalities. The process created a map of over 150 factors influencing inequalities in health outcomes for children aged 0–25 years at the local area level. The system map has six domains; physical environment, governance, economic, social, service, and personal. To our knowledge this is the first study taking a systems approach to addressing inequalities across all aspects of child health. The study shows how group concept mapping can support systems thinking at the local level. The resulting system map illustrates the complexity of factors influencing child health inequalities, and it may be a useful tool in demonstrating to stakeholders the importance of policies that tackle the systemic drivers of child health inequalities beyond those traditionally associated with public health
Flexible aggregation in multiple attribute decision making: Application to the Kuranda Range Road Upgrade
The conventional method of aggregating the satisfaction of transport projects with respect to multiple attributes is commonly some variant of Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), which involves the sum of products of standardized outcomes of projects with respect to attributes and attribute importance weights. It is suggested that alternative forms of aggregation might be more useful, in particular, the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator introduced by Yager (1988). Attribute importance weights and satisfaction of attributes by projects may be aggregated prior to aggregation via an OWA operator. In this case OWA operator weights may be based on the "attitudinal character of the decision maker expressed in terms of the degree of "orness and "andness of the aggregation. A well-known approach is maximum entropy aggregation, in which weights are derived to be as "even (or as minimally dispersed) as a possible subject to satisfying a given "orness or "andness constraint. Recently, aggregation processes have been proposed by Larsen (199920022003) which have several desirable properties and also may be considered as alternative forms of aggregation. An example is given relating to the Kuranda Range Road upgrade (Queensland, Australia) which is limited by grade, poor overtaking opportunities, poor horizontal alignment, and other constraints, and the road is expected to become increasingly congested over the next few years. Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the beta-decay of 137Xe to the Ground State of 137Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory
We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and
experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique -decay
transition ^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+). The
experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment
of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200,
together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for
collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated
signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075
to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the
first-forbidden non-unique -decay shape, this work constitutes a novel
test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor
antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.Comment: Version as accepted by PR
Setups for eliminating static charge of the ATLAS18 strip sensors
Construction of the new all-silicon Inner Tracker (ITk), developed by the
ATLAS collaboration for the High Luminosity LHC, started in 2020 and is
expected to continue till 2028. The ITk detector will include 18,000 highly
segmented and radiation hard n+-in-p silicon strip sensors (ATLAS18), which are
being manufactured by Hamamatsu Photonics. Mechanical and electrical
characteristics of produced sensors are measured upon their delivery at several
institutes participating in a complex Quality Control (QC) program. The QC
tests performed on each individual sensor check the overall integrity and
quality of the sensor. During the QC testing of production ATLAS18 strip
sensors, an increased number of sensors that failed the electrical tests was
observed. In particular, IV measurements indicated an early breakdown, while
large areas containing several tens or hundreds of neighbouring strips with low
interstrip isolation were identified by the Full strip tests, and leakage
current instabilities were measured in a long-term leakage current stability
setup. Moreover, a high surface electrostatic charge reaching a level of
several hundreds of volts per inch was measured on a large number of sensors
and on the plastic sheets, which mechanically protect these sensors in their
paper envelopes. Accumulated data indicates a clear correlation between
observed electrical failures and the sensor charge-up. To mitigate the
above-described issues, the QC testing sites significantly modified the sensor
handling procedures and introduced sensor recovery techniques based on
irradiation of the sensor surface with UV light or application of intensive
flows of ionized gas. In this presentation, we will describe the setups
implemented by the QC testing sites to treat silicon strip sensors affected by
static charge and evaluate the effectiveness of these setups in terms of
improvement of the sensor performance
