    Localization of tyrosine kinase-coding region in v-abl oncogene by the expression of v-abl-encoded proteins in bacteria

    A series of plasmids containing different segments of the v-abl oncogene have been constructed to express different portions of the v- abl protein in bacteria. The tyrosine kinase activity of these proteins was determined by an in vitro assay employing histones or angiotensin II as substrates for the v-abl-encoded tyrosine kinase. These experiments show that the 5'-1.2 kilobases of v-abl is necessary and sufficient to produce an active tyrosine kinase which is functional as a monomeric soluble protein. The kinase-coding region corresponds to the minimal region of v-abl required for the transformation of fibroblasts. The kinase-coding region also coincides with the conserved protein sequences which are found in other tyrosine kinases. A compact domain of the v-abl protein including this kinase-coding region can accumulate to high levels in bacteria. The C-terminal region of the v- abl protein is not needed for the kinase activity and is rapidly degraded in bacteria

    Likelihood Analysis of Repeating in the BATSE Catalogue

    I describe a new likelihood technique, based on counts-in-cells statistics, that I use to analyze repeating in the BATSE 1B and 2B catalogues. Using the 1B data, I find that repeating is preferred over non-repeating by 4.3:1 odds, with a well-defined peak at 5-6 repetitions per source. I find that the post-1B data are consistent with the repeating model inferred from the 1B data, after taking into account the lower fraction of bursts with well-determined positions. Combining the two data sets, I find that the odds favoring repeating over non-repeating are almost unaffected at 4:1, with a narrower peak at 5 repetitions per source. I conclude that the data sets are consistent both with each other and with repeating, and that for these data sets the odds favor repeating.Comment: 5 pages including 3 encapsulated figures, as a uuencoded, gzipped, Postscript file.     Application of inelastic epithermal neutron scattering to the vibrational spectroscopy of adsorbed molecules: Butane physisorbed on graphite (0001) surfaces

    doi:10.1063/1.448924Inelastic epithermal neutron scattering (IENS) has been used to investigate the intramolecular vibrations of butane [CH3(CH2)2CH3] physisorbed on the (0001) surfaces of a graphite powder. The purpose of these studies was to assess IENS as a vibrational spectroscopy for adsorbed species by using a relatively well‐characterized substrate (Carbopack B). The experiments were performed on the IN1 spectrometer located on a beam from the ''hot'' source at the Institut Laue‐Langevin reactor in Grenoble. Film coverages of 1.0 and 3.6 layers were investigated at a temperature of 78 K. The IENS spectra are rich in structure, containing eight vibrational bands in the energy‐transfer range from 280-3470 cm−1 (35-430 meV). The similarity in the spectra at the two coverages investigated indicates that in this energy‐transfer range the butane intramolecular modes are not strongly perturbed by physisorption on graphite. A detailed comparison is made between the monolayer IENS spectrum and those calculated from models of a free and adsorbed molecule. Both models employ a previously derived intramolecular force field in the normal mode calculation. A third calculation assumes the displacement eigenvectors of the free molecule but replaces the mode eigenfrequencies by their measured Raman and IR values. It reproduces the observed IENS spectra very well. The large number of vibrational bands observed and the close agreement with the calculated spectra suggest butane as a desirable adsorbate for similar experiments on catalytic substrates.This work was supported in part by National Science Foundation Grants DMR-1905958, INT- 8012228, and DMR-8304366 and by a grant of the Petroleum Research fund, administered by the American Chemical Society

    Determination of the magnetization profile of Co/Mg periodic multilayers by magneto-optic Kerr effect and X-ray magnetic resonant reflectivity

    The resonant magnetic reflectivity of Co/Mg multilayers around the Co L2,3 absorption edge is simulated then measured on a specifically designed sample. The dichroic signal is obtained when making the difference between the two reflectivities measured with the magnetic field applied in two opposite directions parallel to the sample surface. The simulations show that the existence of magnetic dead layers at the interfaces between the Co and Mg layers leads to an important increase of the dichroic signal measured in the vicinity of the third Bragg peak that otherwise should be negligible. The measurements are in agreement with the model introducing 0.25 nm thick dead layers. This is attributed to the Co atoms in contact with the Mg layers and thus we conclude that the Co-Mg interfaces are abrupt from the magnetic point of view.Comment: 8 page

    Possible large phase in psi(2S) -> 1-0- Decays

    The strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes are analyzed on the basis of the measurements of J/psi, psi(2S) -> 1-0- in e+e- experiments. The currently available experimental information is revised with inclusion of the contribution from e+e- -> gamma * -> 1-0- . The study shows that a large phase around minus 90 degree between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes could not be ruled out by the experimental data for psi(2S).Comment: 4 page
