    IRAS and ground-based observations of star formation regions in the Magellanic clouds

    The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) detected several hundred individual regions of star formation in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Nearly two dozen of the brightest such sources were searched for from the ground at 10 microns; most of these were located and measured at wavelengths from 0.6 to 20 microns. Three principle results emerge from this study: First, the IRAS data show that star formation is considerably less active in the SMC than in the LMC, relative either to mass, luminosity, or H I content. The reduced activity in the SMC is consistent with the smaller amount of molecular material inferred from CO observations. Second, the sizes of the objects range from less than a few arcsecs (objects which look like extremely compact HII regions, with little or no extended radio, optical, or infrared emission) to some tens of arcsecs across (giant HII regions, of which the largest and brightest is 30 Doradus). Third, there are no obvious differences in the characteristics of the central portions of the LMC and SMC sources; all look like Galactic H II regions of similar luminosity

    Surface topography of the Greenland Ice Sheet from satellite radar altimetry

    Surface elevation maps of the southern half of the Greenland subcontinent are produced from radar altimeter data acquired by the Seasat satellite. A summary of the processing procedure and examples of return waveform data are given. The elevation data are used to generate a regular grid which is then computer contoured to provide an elevation contour map. Ancillary maps show the statistical quality of the elevation data and various characteristics of the surface. The elevation map is used to define ice flow directions and delineate the major drainage basins. Regular maps of the Jakobshavns Glacier drainage basin and the ice divide in the vicinity of Crete Station are presented. Altimeter derived elevations are compared with elevations measured both by satellite geoceivers and optical surveying

    A Nonpolymorphic Class I Gene in the Murine Major Histocompatibility Complex

    DNA sequence analysis of a class I gene (QlO), which maps to the Qa2,3 locus in the C57BL/lO (H- 2b haplotype) mouse, reveals that it is almost identical to a cDNA clone (pH16) isolated from a SWR/J (H-2q haplotype) mouse liver cDNA library. Exon 5, in particular, has an unusual structure such that a polypeptide product is unlikely to be anchored in the cell membrane. Our findings suggest that the two sequences are derived from allelic class I genes, which are nonpolymorphic, in contrast to H-2K allelic sequences from the same mice, and they may encode liver-specific polypeptides of unknown function. Our previous studies indicate that the QlO gene is a potential donor gene for the generation of mutations at the H-2K locus by inter-gene transfer of genetic information. Thus the lack of polymorphism in class I genes at the QlO locus implies either that they are not recipients for such exchanges or that selective pressure prevents the accumulation of mutations in genes at this locus

    An Attempt to Detect the Galactic Bulge at 12 microns with IRAS

    Surface brightness maps at 12 microns, derived from observations with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), are used to estimate the integrated flux at this wavelength from the Galactic bulge as a function of galactic latitude along the minor axis. A simple model was used to remove Galactic disk emission (e.g. unresolved stars and dust) from the IRAS measurements. The resulting estimates are compared with predictions for the 12 micron bulge surface brightness based on observations of complete samples of optically identified M giants in several minor axis bulge fields. No evidence is found for any significant component of 12m emission in the bulge other than that expected from the optically identified M star sample plus normal, lower luminosity stars. Known large amplitude variables and point sources from the IRAS catalogue contribute only a small fraction to the total 12 micron flux.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 13 pages of text including tables in MS WORD97 generated postscript; 3 figures in postscript by Sigma Plo

    Entanglement Patterns in Mutually Unbiased Basis Sets for N Prime-state Particles

    A few simply-stated rules govern the entanglement patterns that can occur in mutually unbiased basis sets (MUBs), and constrain the combinations of such patterns that can coexist (ie, the stoichiometry) in full complements of p^N+1 MUBs. We consider Hilbert spaces of prime power dimension (as realized by systems of N prime-state particles, or qupits), where full complements are known to exist, and we assume only that MUBs are eigenbases of generalized Pauli operators, without using a particular construction. The general rules include the following: 1) In any MUB, a particular qupit appears either in a pure state, or totally entangled, and 2) in any full MUB complement, each qupit is pure in p+1 bases (not necessarily the same ones), and totally entangled in the remaining p^N-p. It follows that the maximum number of product bases is p+1, and when this number is realized, all remaining p^N-p bases in the complement are characterized by the total entanglement of every qupit. This "standard distribution" is inescapable for two qupits (of any p), where only product and generalized Bell bases are admissible MUB types. This and the following results generalize previous results for qubits and qutrits. With three qupits there are three MUB types, and a number of combinations (p+2) are possible in full complements. With N=4, there are 6 MUB types for p=2, but new MUB types become possible with larger p, and these are essential to the realization of full complements. With this example, we argue that new MUB types, showing new entanglement characteristics, should enter with every step in N, and when N is a prime plus 1, also at critical p values, p=N-1.     A gridded surface-elevation data set and a geo-referenced data base for the Seasat radar altimeter data over Greenland are described. This is a user guide to accompany the data provided to data centers and other users. The grid points are on a polar stereographic projection with a nominal spacing of 20 km. The gridded elevations are derived from the elevation data in the geo-referenced data base by a weighted fitting of a surface in the neighborhood of each grid point. The gridded elevations are useful for the creating of large-scale contour maps, and the geo-referenced data base is useful for regridding, creating smaller-scale contour maps, and examinating individual elevation measurements in specific geographic areas. Tape formats are described, and a FORTRAN program for reading the data tape is listed and provided on the tape
