Robustness of Equations Under Operational Extensions

Sound behavioral equations on open terms may become unsound after conservative extensions of the underlying operational semantics. Providing criteria under which such equations are preserved is extremely useful; in particular, it can avoid the need to repeat proofs when extending the specified language. This paper investigates preservation of sound equations for several notions of bisimilarity on open terms: closed-instance (ci-)bisimilarity and formal-hypothesis (fh-)bisimilarity, both due to Robert de Simone, and hypothesis-preserving (hp-)bisimilarity, due to Arend Rensink. For both fh-bisimilarity and hp-bisimilarity, we prove that arbitrary sound equations on open terms are preserved by all disjoint extensions which do not add labels. We also define slight variations of fh- and hp-bisimilarity such that all sound equations are preserved by arbitrary disjoint extensions. Finally, we give two sets of syntactic criteria (on equations, resp. operational extensions) and prove each of them to be sufficient for preserving ci-bisimilarity.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS'10, arXiv:1011.601

Completeness of timed mu mu CRL

We provide soundness and completeness results for the extension of muCRL with time put forward by Groote. The specification language muCRL has been designed especially to deal with data in a process algebraic context. Using the features for data, only a minor extension of the language was needed to obtain a very expressive variant of time. The main tool to establish the completeness result is a mapping of timed to untimed muCRL and employing the completeness results obtained for untimed muCRL

Managing the complexity of doing it all : an exploratory study on students' experiences when trained stepwise in conducting consultations

Background: At most medical schools the components required to conduct a consultation, medical knowledge, communication, clinical reasoning and physical examination skills, are trained separately. Afterwards, all the knowledge and skills students acquired must be integrated into complete consultations, an art that lies at the heart of the medical profession. Inevitably, students experience conducting consultations as complex and challenging. Literature emphasizes the importance of three didactic course principles: moving from partial tasks to whole task learning, diminishing supervisors' support and gradually increasing students' responsibility. This study explores students' experiences of an integrated consultation course using these three didactic principles to support them in this difficult task. Methods: Six focus groups were conducted with 20 pre-clerkship and 19 clerkship students in total. Discussions were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed by Nvivo using the constant comparative strategy within a thematic analysis. Results: Conducting complete consultations motivated students in their learning process as future physician. Initially, students were very much focused on medical problem solving. Completing the whole task of a consultation obligated them to transfer their theoretical medical knowledge into applicable clinical knowledge on the spot. Furthermore, diminishing the support of a supervisor triggered students to reflect on their own actions but contrasted with their increased appreciation of critical feedback. Increasing students' responsibility stimulated their active learning but made some students feel overloaded. These students were anxious to miss patient information or not being able to take the right decisions or to answer patients' questions, which sometimes resulted in evasive coping techniques, such as talking faster to prevent the patient asking questions. Conclusion: The complex task of conducting complete consultations should be implemented early within medical curricula because students need time to organize their medical knowledge into applicable clinical knowledge. An integrated consultation course should comprise a step-by-step teaching strategy with a variety of supervisors' feedback modi, adapted to students' competence. Finally, students should be guided in formulating achievable standards to prevent them from feeling overloaded in practicing complete consultations with simulated or real patients

Completeness in discrete-time process algebra

We prove soundness and completeness for some ACP-style concrete, relative-time, discrete-time process algebras. We treat non-delayable actions, delayable actions, and immediate deadlock. Basic process algebras are examined extensively, and also some concurrent process algebras are considered. We conclude with ACPdrt, which combines all described features in one theory

Vroegtijdige zorgplanning bij personen met dementie. Eefect van VZP op tevredenheid en op kwaliteitsindicatoren

Context: Vroegtijdige zorgplanning (VZP) is een proces van continu overleg tussen patiënt en zorgverlener(s). Het is gericht op het uitklaren van waarden en wensen van de patiënt ten aanzien van de toekomstige (palliatieve) zorg. Personen met dementie vormen een kwetsbare subgroep, waarop in dit proefschrift specifiek gefocust wordt. Er is weinig gekend over het effect van VZP op de tevredenheid en op kwaliteitsindicatoren. Onderzoeksvragen: Antwoorden op volgende vragen werden gezocht: Wat is VZP en wat zijn de kenmerken? Wat is in de literatuur gekend over VZP in woonzorgcentra (WZC’s)? Heeft VZP een invloed op de kwaliteit van zorg? Bestaan er kwaliteitsindicatoren voor het meten van zorgkwaliteit bij personen met dementie in WZC’s? Hoe kunnen we deze resultaten in de praktijk meten? Wat is de (subjectieve) tevredenheid en de perceptie van de bewoner na het doorlopen van het VZP traject? Wat is de (objectieve) uitkomst van enkele kwaliteitsindicatoren? Methode: Vooreerst werd een literatuurstudie over VZP verricht. Specifieke aandacht ging naar personen met dementie en kwaliteitsindicatoren. Ten tweede werd een interventiestudie verricht in 3 WZC’s in Tienen en omgeving. Inclusiecriteria waren nieuwe residenten met een MMSE van 19-25. VZP werd systematisch en via een vast sjabloon aangereikt. Er vonden twee interdisciplinaire overlegmomenten (IDO’s) plaats, waarbij de vaste huisarts betrokken werd. Het effect van VZP op de tevredenheid (enerzijds bewoner en anderzijds zorgverlener) werd nagegaan via enquêteformulieren. Het effect van VZP op enkele kwaliteitsindicatoren werd nagegaan via een invultabel. Twee kwaliteitsindicatoren werden vergeleken met een controlegroep. Resultaten: VZP heeft een positief effect op de tevredenheid van de bewoner (50% ‘goed’ en 25% ‘zeer goed’ voor versus 75% ‘goed’ en 25% ‘zeer goed’ na het traject). Ook de zorgverlener ervaart de zorg beter na het introduceren van VZP (50% ‘goed’ en 25% ‘zeer goed’) dan ervoor (41,6% ‘goed’ en 16,6% ‘zeer goed’). De bewoner vindt VZP nuttig (50% ‘nuttig’ en 33,3% ‘zeer nuttig’) en de zorgverlener ervaart een gunstig effect van VZP op de kwaliteit van zorg (58,3% ‘gunstig’ en 16,6% ‘zeer gunstig’). Meer dan de helft (58,3%) van de bewoners wil VZP krijgen bij intake in een WZC via implementatie door de plaatselijke zorgverlener. De helft (50%) van de vaste huisartsen was aanwezig op de IDO’s van hun patiënt. Er werden geen klinisch significante resultaten gevonden wat betreft de locatie van overlijden (WZC of elders) en ook niet wat betreft frequentie ziekenhuisopnames. Conclusies: VZP heeft een positief effect op de tevredenheid van de bewoner en van de zorgverlener. De bewoner voelt zich nauw betrokken bij de geleverde zorg en vindt VZP nuttig. De zorgverlener vindt dat VZP een gunstig effect heeft op de kwaliteit van zorg. De systematische implementatie van VZP bij nieuw opgenomen personen met dementie met een MMSE tussen 19 en 25 is geslaagd. De WZC’s reageren positief op het aangereikte model en werksjabloon en willen dit initiatief in de toekomst verderzetten. Een langere studieduur is wenselijk.
