Summary Breast cancers are now the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst worldwide women, with the number of newly diagnosed cases 1 670 000 patients (in 2012). Among deaths due to cancer, breast cancer is the first cause of women death in less developed countries and the second (after lung cancer) in developed countries. In Poland continuous increase of breast cancer incidences is being observed. Breast cancers are mostly diagnosed in 50 - 69 years women, but recently the number of breast cancer rates in younger women is increasing. In the last two decades, new prevention strategies allow the detection of the disease development in its early stages, significantly increasing the chance of patients longer life or full recovery. However, the treatment of breast cancer remains a long-term process which not gives a guarantee for the inhibition and recovery. The therapeutic efficacy of therapy methods is very diverse and always requires customization, and uses separate treatment strategies (surgery, pharmacotherapy, physiotherapy, psychotherapy), which will improve patient general health, slowing down the disease progression or improving the quality of life. This article is an attempt to systematize the available diagnosis and treatment methods of breast cancer with a particular focus on a comprehensive approach to this clinical problem. The aim is to better understand the role of early diagnosis in prevention of breast cancer development and the need of a comprehensive approach (interaction of treatments methods in the field of pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology) in the treatment of this disease
Single high-dose vitamin D supplementation as an approach for reducing ultramarathon-induced inflammation : a double-blind randomized controlled trial
Purpose: A growing number of studies indicate the importance of vitamin D supplementation for sports performance. However, the effects of a single high-dose vitamin D supplementation on ultramarathon-induced inflammation have not been investigated. We here analyzed the effect of a single high-dose vitamin D supplementation on the inflammatory marker levels in ultramarathon runners after an ultramarathon run (maximal run 240 km). Methods: In the study, 35 runners (amateurs) were assigned into two groups: single high-dose vitamin D supplementation group, administered vitamin D (150,000 IU) in vegetable oil 24 h before the start of the run (n = 16); and placebo group (n = 19). Blood was collected for analysis 24 h before, immediately after, and 24 h after the run. Results: Serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly increased after the ultramarathon in both groups. The increase was greater in the vitamin D group than in the control group. Based on post-hoc and other analyses, the increase in interleukin 6 and 10, and resistin levels immediately after the run was significantly higher in runners in the control group than that in those in the supplementation group. Leptin, oncostatin M, and metalloproteinase tissue inhibitor levels were significantly decreased in both groups after the run, regardless of the supplementation. Conclusions: Ultramarathon significantly increases the serum 25(OH)D levels. Attenuation of changes in interleukin levels upon vitamin D supplementation confirmed that vitamin D has anti-inflammatory effect on exercise-induced inflammation
Gross motor coordination and their relationship with body mass and physical activity level during growth in children aged 8-11 years old: a longitudinal and allometric approach

The published version can be accessed at the following link on the publisher’s website: https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.13483Background: Gross motor coordination (GMC) is fundamental to the harmonious development of physical skills during the growth of children. This research aimed to explore the developmental changes in GMC during childhood, having controlled for the differences in children's body size and shape using a longitudinal, allometric scaling methodology. Methods: A total of 104 children from North-East Italy of third-fourth- and fifth-grade students and each participant were tested for three consequently years. Subjects performed the short version of korperkoordinationstest fur kinder (KTK3) and the anthropometric characteristics were simultaneously collected. The physical activity questionnaire (PAQ-C) was used to evaluate the weekly physical engagement. Results: Ontogenetic multiplicative models suggested nonlinear associations with GMC across the children's developmental years. Linear physique was a significant predictor associated with the development of GMC across time. PAQ-C was significantly associated with GMC from 8 to 13 years old. Conclusion: Growth does not respect linear trends. A greater lean body mass could be assessed as a reliable predictor of GMC in children. The crucial period of life to improve the GMC is 8-10 years, while stabilization becomes evident from 10 to 13 years.Published onlin
How art constitutes the human : aesthetics, empathy, and the interesting in autofiction
This chapter examines ‘graphic autofiction’ in Lynda Barry’s One! Hundred! Demons! (2002) and What It Is (2009) and Phoebe Gloeckner’s A Child’s Life and Other Stories (2000) and The Diary of A Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures (2002), demonstrating how it allows feminist performances that visualize cartoonists’ authentic experiences of sexual and other forms of trauma. The chapter makes a valuable contribution to current debates on autofiction by moving beyond its literary expressions and investigating how the hybrid medium of comics accommodates the genre and how that, in its turn, complicates the representation of trauma. It also proposes that ‘graphic autofiction’ allows the formation of feminist counter-narratives to the silencing of female abuse victims and the latter’s representation beyond victimhood
