In addition, the user can process the measured data from the same computer terminal used for range control. The design of the laser metrology system was completed. It provides precise measruement of probe location during near-field measurements as well as position data for control of the translation beam and probe cart.     Observations of Ultracool White Dwarfs

    We present new spectroscopic and photometric measurements of the white dwarfs LHS 3250 and WD 0346+246. Along with F351-50, these white dwarfs are the coolest ones known, all with effective temperatures below 4000 K. Their membership in the Galactic halo population is discussed, and detailed comparisons of all three objects with new atmosphere models are presented. The new models consider the effects of mixed H/He atmospheres and indicate that WD 0346+246 and F351-50 have predominantly helium atmospheres with only traces of hydrogen. LHS 3250 may be a double degenerate whose average radiative temperature is between 2000 and 4000 K, but the new models fail to explain this object

    Synthesis and Characterization of Symmetrically versus Unsymmetrically Proton-Bridged Hexa-Iron Clusters

    Syntheses and magnetic and structural characterization of hexa-iron complexes of derivatized salicylaldoximes are discussed. Complexation of Fe(BF4)2·6H2O with each ligand (H2 L1 and H4 L2) in a methanolic-pyridine solution resulted in hexa-iron compounds (C1 and C2, respectively), which each contain two near-parallel metal triangles of [Fe3-μ3-O], linked by six fluoride bridges and stabilized by a hydrogen-bonded proton between the μ3-O groups. Within each metal triangle of C2, Fe(III) ions are connected via the amine "straps" of (H4 L2-2H). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer data of C1 and C2 indicate the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the high-spin (S = 5/2) Fe(III) centers. For C1, two quadrupole doublets are observed at room temperature and 5 K, consistent with structural data from which discrete but disordered [Fe3-μ3-O] and [Fe3-μ3-OH] species were inferred. For C2, a single sharp quadrupole doublet with splitting intermediate between those determined for C1 was observed, consistent with the symmetric [Fe3-μ3-O···H···μ3-O-Fe3] species inferred crystallographically from the very short μ3-O···μ3-O separation. The differences in the physical properties of the complexes, as seen in the Mössbauer, X-ray, and magnetic data, are attributed to the conformational flexibility imparted by the nature of the linkages between the closely related ligands

    Phase appearance or disappearance in two-phase flows

    This paper is devoted to the treatment of specific numerical problems which appear when phase appearance or disappearance occurs in models of two-phase flows. Such models have crucial importance in many industrial areas such as nuclear power plant safety studies. In this paper, two outstanding problems are identified: first, the loss of hyperbolicity of the system when a phase appears or disappears and second, the lack of positivity of standard shock capturing schemes such as the Roe scheme. After an asymptotic study of the model, this paper proposes accurate and robust numerical methods adapted to the simulation of phase appearance or disappearance. Polynomial solvers are developed to avoid the use of eigenvectors which are needed in usual shock capturing schemes, and a method based on an adaptive numerical diffusion is designed to treat the positivity problems. An alternate method, based on the use of the hyperbolic tangent function instead of a polynomial, is also considered. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed solutions

    Generating multimedia presentations: from plain text to screenplay

    In many Natural Language Generation (NLG) applications, the output is limited to plain text – i.e., a string of words with punctuation and paragraph breaks, but no indications for layout, or pictures, or dialogue. In several projects, we have begun to explore NLG applications in which these extra media are brought into play. This paper gives an informal account of what we have learned. For coherence, we focus on the domain of patient information leaflets, and follow an example in which the same content is expressed first in plain text, then in formatted text, then in text with pictures, and finally in a dialogue script that can be performed by two animated agents. We show how the same meaning can be mapped to realisation patterns in different media, and how the expanded options for expressing meaning are related to the perceived style and tone of the presentation. Throughout, we stress that the extra media are not simple added to plain text, but integrated with it: thus the use of formatting, or pictures, or dialogue, may require radical rewording of the text itself

    Ultraviolet Emission Line Ratios of Cataclysmic Variables

    We present a statistical analysis of the ultraviolet emission lines of cataclysmic variables (CVs) based on 430\approx 430 ultraviolet spectra of 20 sources extracted from the International Ultraviolet Explorer Uniform Low Dispersion Archive. These spectra are used to measure the emission line fluxes of N V, Si IV, C IV, and He II and to construct diagnostic flux ratio diagrams. We investigate the flux ratio parameter space populated by individual CVs and by various CV subclasses (e.g., AM Her stars, DQ Her stars, dwarf novae, nova-like variables). For most systems, these ratios are clustered within a range of 1\sim 1 decade for log Si IV/C IV 0.5\approx -0.5 and log He II/C IV 1.0\approx -1.0 and 1.5\sim 1.5 decades for log N V/C IV 0.25\approx -0.25. These ratios are compared to photoionization and collisional ionization models to constrain the excitation mechanism and the physical conditions of the line-emitting gas. We find that the collisional models do the poorest job of reproducing the data. The photoionization models reproduce the Si IV/C IV line ratios for some shapes of the ionizing spectrum, but the predicted N V/C IV line ratios are simultaneously too low by typically 0.5\sim 0.5 decades. Worse, for no parameters are any of the models able to reproduce the observed He II/C IV line ratios; this ratio is far too small in the collisional and scattering models and too large by typically 0.5\sim 0.5 decades in the photoionization models.Comment: LaTeX format, uses aaspp4.sty, 28 pages, 11 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal 10/16/9

My reading of the novels enables me to trace important themes in recent discourses on the nature of contemporary capitalism, including notions of resistance and universality.
