    Handwriting Performance of Typical Second-Grade Students as Measured by the Evaluation Tool of Children\u27s Handwriting - Manuscript and Teacher Perceptions of Legibility

    Background: The purpose of the study was to describe scores achieved by typical second-grade students on the Evaluation Tool of Children’s Handwriting – Manuscript and to compare scores with teacher perceptions. Method: As part of a larger study, the ETCH-M was administered to 74 second-grade students. Teachers scored classroom samples of handwriting assignments using a researcher-developed scale and scores were compared to ETCH-M scores to determine cutoff values for good versus poor handwriting. Results: Mean scores for total word legibility, total letter legibility, and total numeral legibility were 88.82%, 84.30%, and 89.26%, respectively. Cutoff scores below 82% for word legibility and 77% for letter legibility for second-grade students based on teacher perceptions of below average handwriting are cautiously suggested. Research with a larger dataset is needed. Boys scored significantly lower on the ETCH-M and this finding warrants further research. Conclusion: The findings add to the limited body of information about the psychometric properties of the ETCH-M and the normative performance of typical second-grade students

    Comparative Floristic Studies of Georgian Sandhill Ecosystems Reveals a Dynamic Composition of Endemics and Generalists

    Sandhill habitats are characterized by sandy, xeric soils that contain a unique assemblage of plants and animals. Similar to the broader long-leaf pine (Pinus palustris) and wire grass (Aristida stricta) ecosystem that sandhills are a subset of, agriculture, development, and habitat modifications have caused sandhill ecosystems to become degraded, putting many species at risk of extinction. Previous studies have focused on diversity within individual sandhills, leaving us with an incomplete understanding of how these communities form, what species are endemic, whether endemics are widespread across sandhills, and how species have adapted to these communities. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of these ecosystems, we sampled four Georgian Coastal Plain sandhills and compared species occurrences and life history patterns. Species diversity was positively correlated with sandhill area size, however, the proportion of endemic taxa was not influenced by area, as all four sites contained approximately the same number of endemics regardless of size. Endemic species differed from generalists in that the majority of species were herbaceous perennials. Sandhill generalists were seldom widespread across sites and mostly occurred on one or two sites. Taken together, our results provide the first opportunity to observe the dynamic nature of sandhill ecosystems, which we found to differ from one another due to endemic and generalist species turnover, but were consistently inhabited by a similar subset of taxa. Continued destruction of sandhill habitats will have a negative effect on plant species diversity, which could lead to the loss of the small, but important endemic sandhill community

    Diet Composition of Age-0 Fishes in Created Habitats of the Lower Missouri River

    Channelization of the Missouri River has greatly reduced the availability of shallow water habitats used by many larval and juvenile fishes and contributed to imperilment of floodplain-dependent biota. Creation of small side channels, or chutes, is being used to restore shallow water habitat and reverse negative environmental effects associated with channelization. In the summer of 2012, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected early life stages of fishes from constructed chutes and nearby unrestored shallow habitats at six sites on the Missouri River between Rulo, Nebraska and St. Louis, Missouri. We compared the diets of two abundant species of fishes to test the hypothesis that created shallow chutes provided better foraging habitat for early life stages than nearby unrestored shallow habitats. Graphical analysis of feeding patterns of freshwater drum indicated specialization on chironomid larvae, which were consumed in greater numbers in unrestored mainstem reaches compared to chutes. Hiodon spp. were more generalist feeders with no differences in prey use between habitat types. Significantly greater numbers of individuals with empty stomachs were observed in chute shallow-water habitats, indicating poor foraging habitat. For these two species, constructed chute shallow-water habitat does not appear to provide the hypothesized benefits of higher quality foraging habitat

    Observation of a subgap density of states in superconductor-normal metal bilayers in the Cooper limit

    We present transport and tunneling measurements of Pb-Ag bilayers with thicknesses, dPbd_{Pb} and dAgd_{Ag}, that are much less than the superconducting coherence length. The transition temperature, TcT_c, and energy gap, Δ\Delta, in the tunneling Density of States (DOS) decrease exponentially with dAgd_{Ag} at fixed dPbd_{Pb}. Simultaneously, a DOS that increases linearly from the Fermi energy grows and fills nearly 40% of the gap as TcT_c is 1/10 of TcT_c of bulk Pb. This behavior suggests that a growing fraction of quasiparticles decouple from the superconductor as TcT_c goes to 0. The linear dependence is consistent with the quasiparticles becoming trapped on integrable trajectories in the metal layer.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures.     Pyrazolyl Methyls Prescribe the Electronic Properties of Iron(II) Tetra(pyrazolyl)lutidine Chloride Complexes

    A series of iron(II) chloride complexes of pentadentate ligands related to α,α,α′,α′-tetra(pyrazolyl)-2,6-lutidine, pz4lut, has been prepared to evaluate whether pyrazolyl substitution has any systematic impact on the electronic properties of the complexes. For this purpose, the new tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethylpyrazolyl)lutidine ligand, pz**4lut, was prepared via a CoCl2-catalyzed rearrangement reaction. The equimolar combination of ligand and FeCl2 in methanol gives the appropriate 1:1 complexes [FeCl(pzR4lut)]Cl that are each isolated in the solid state as a hygroscopic solvate. In solution, the iron(II) complexes have been fully characterized by several spectroscopic methods and cyclic voltammetry. In the solid state, the complexes have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, and, in some cases, by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Mössbauer studies show that the complexes remain high spin to 4 K and exclude spin-state changes as the cause of the surprising solid-state thermochromic properties of the complexes. Non-intuitive results of spectroscopic and structural studies showed that methyl substitution at the 3- and 5- positions of the pyrazolyl rings reduces the ligand field strength through steric effects whereas methyl substitution at the 4-position of the pyrazolyl rings increases the ligand field strength through inductive effects

    3D Forward and Back-Projection for X-Ray CT Using Separable Footprints

    Iterative methods for 3D image reconstruction have the potential to improve image quality over conventional filtered back projection (FBP) in X-ray computed tomography (CT). However, the computation burden of 3D cone-beam forward and back-projectors is one of the greatest challenges facing practical adoption of iterative methods for X-ray CT. Moreover, projector accuracy is also important for iterative methods. This paper describes two new separable footprint (SF) projector methods that approximate the voxel footprint functions as 2D separable functions. Because of the separability of these footprint functions, calculating their integrals over a detector cell is greatly simplified and can be implemented efficiently. The SF-TR projector uses trapezoid functions in the transaxial direction and rectangular functions in the axial direction, whereas the SF-TT projector uses trapezoid functions in both directions. Simulations and experiments showed that both SF projector methods are more accurate than the distance-driven (DD) projector, which is a current state-of-the-art method in the field. The SF-TT projector is more accurate than the SF-TR projector for rays associated with large cone angles.
