Reporting the Irish Famine in America: Images of Suffering Ireland in the American Press, 1845-1848
This chapter is a study of American newspaper reporting on the Great Irish Famine. The study examines six master narratives that constrained the image of Ireland and the Irish people presented to American readers. Those narrative constraints predisposed Americans to respond with hostility when Irish Famine refugees began to arrive in the United States
“Above all Greek, above all Roman Fame”: Classical Rhetoric in America during the Colonial and Early National Periods
The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art. Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early Ameria bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. This essay marks the various specific aspects of the reception and influence of the classical rhetorical tradition in the learning, speaking and writing of Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
The Rhetoric(s) of St. Augustine\u27s Confessions
In this essay, I offer a sympathetic reading of the rhetoric(s) of Augustine’s Confessions. First, as a historian of rhetoric I am interested in what Augustine’s narrative can tell us about the theory and practice of rhetoric in the late classical period and the early Christian era. From this perspective, I am interested in exploring what Augustine discloses about the rhetoric he learned in the provincial Roman schools, and taught at Carthage, Rome, and Milan. Second, I am interested in Augustine’s own work on rhetoric, especially his De Doctrina Christiana, most of which he composed during the period right before he began the Confessions. In particular, I am interested in how the rhetorical ethics that emerges from Augustine’s formal treatment of Biblical exegesis and preaching, and which distinguishes Augustine’s rhetoric from that of his classical predecessors, can illuminate our interpretation of the Confessions. Finally, I am interested in exploring how the Confessions itself works as a rhetorical text— that is, as a discourse addressed to an audience for the purpose of influence. In particular, I am interested in exploring the specific pastoral functions served by Augustine’s narrative
The Child Independence is Born: James Otis and Writs of Assistance
This chapter is a reexamination of the Writs of Assistance speech by James Otis. In particular, it is a reconsideration of the evidence upon which rests the historical reputation of Otis’s address. Are the claims by historians who credit Otis with sparking the Revolutionary movement in colonial America warranted or not? That reassessment begins with a detailed review of the nature and function of writs of assistance within the political, legal, and economic environment of colonial Massachusetts. It then turns to an analysis of the legal dispute over writs of assistance in the 1761 trial. From there we will reconstruct what Otis said, and in particular consider the authenticity of various texts purported to represent Otis’s words and arguments. How did the speech text enter the public record, and what were the various forces that contributed to its corruption and Of particular interest is the reliability of the recollections of John Adams made fifty-seven years after the writs of assistance trial. These recollections have been largely dismissed and discredited by historians and critics as of little value in understanding Otis’s speech. But, are there reasons why we should place more confidence in Adams? Can we credit Adams’s memory enough to construct a fuller portrait of the arguments and evidence advanced by Otis? Finally, what would it mean for our comprehension of Otis’s performance, and his importance in the early patriot movement, if Adams’s recollections were reliable? With a more complete picture of Otis’s manifesto, what must we conclude about Otis’s influence on colonial opposition to British rule, and about his impact on American legal development in the areas of constitutional protection against unreasonable search, and with regard to the practice of judicial review of legislative action
One and Inseparable: The Union and Deliberative Conduct in Webster\u27s Reply to Hayne.
In Daniel Webster\u27s view, the survival of the Union required not only an orator who could defend the Constitution as he did against Robert Hayne, but one who could embody the spirit of the constitution in deliberative performance. Webster uses his performance in debate not only to assail his opponent, defend New England, and expound on the Constitution, but further to demonstrate with his own oratory the abiding value of decorum, prudence, and eloquence in the national life. Webster becomes the ideal of deliberative performance as he contrasts his own conduct in debate with that of his Southern opponent. Webster’s speech is inspired by the need to manage preservation of the Union not only with a Constitutional theory, but also with a paradigm of public action
Reflexive obstacle avoidance for kinematically-redundant manipulators
Dexterous telerobots incorporating 17 or more degrees of freedom operating under coordinated, sensor-driven computer control will play important roles in future space operations. They will also be used on Earth in assignments like fire fighting, construction and battlefield support. A real time, reflexive obstacle avoidance system, seen as a functional requirement for such massively redundant manipulators, was developed using arm-mounted proximity sensors to control manipulator pose. The project involved a review and analysis of alternative proximity sensor technologies for space applications, the development of a general-purpose algorithm for synthesizing sensor inputs, and the implementation of a prototypical system for demonstration and testing. A 7 degree of freedom Robotics Research K-2107HR manipulator was outfitted with ultrasonic proximity sensors as a testbed, and Robotics Research's standard redundant motion control algorithm was modified such that an object detected by sensor arrays located at the elbow effectively applies a force to the manipulator elbow, normal to the axis. The arm is repelled by objects detected by the sensors, causing the robot to steer around objects in the workspace automatically while continuing to move its tool along the commanded path without interruption. The mathematical approach formulated for synthesizing sensor inputs can be employed for redundant robots of any kinematic configuration
GRO J1744-28, search for the counterpart: infrared photometry and spectroscopy
Using VLT/ISAAC, we detected 2 candidate counterparts to the bursting pulsar
GRO J1744-28, one bright and one faint, within the X-ray error circles of
XMM-Newton and Chandra. In determining the spectral types of the counterparts
we applied 3 different extinction corrections; one for an all-sky value, one
for a Galactic Bulge value and one for a local value. We find the local value,
with an extinction law of alpha = 3.23 +- 0.01 is the only correction that
results in colours and magnitudes for both bright and faint counterparts
consistent with a small range of spectral types, and for the bright
counterpart, consistent with the spectroscopic identification. Photometry of
the faint candidate indicates it is a K7/M0 V star at a distance of 3.75 +- 1
kpc. This star would require a very low inclination angle (i < 9deg) to satisfy
the mass function constraints; however it cannot be excluded as the counterpart
without follow-up spectroscopy to detect emission signatures of accretion.
Photometry and spectroscopy of the bright candidate indicate it is most likely
a G/K III star. The spectrum does not show Br-gamma emission, a known indicator
of accretion. The bright star's magnitudes are in agreement with the
constraints placed on a probable counterpart by the calculations of Rappaport &
Joss (1997) for an evolved star that has had its envelope stripped. The mass
function indicates the counterpart should have M < 0.3 Msol for an inclination
of i >= 15deg; a stripped giant, or a main sequence M3+ V star are consistent
with this mass-function constraint. In both cases mass-transfer, if present,
will be by wind-accretion as the counterpart will not fill its Roche lobe given
the observed orbital period. The derived magnetic field of 2.4 x 10^{11} G will
inhibit accretion by the propeller effect, hence its quiescent state.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 table, MNRAS accepted Changes to the content

A 17 degree of freedom anthropomorphic manipulator
A 17 axis anthropomorphic manipulator, providing coordinated control of two seven degree of freedom arms mounted on a three degree of freedom torso-waist assembly, is presented. This massively redundant telerobot, designated the Robotics Research K/B-2017 Dexterous Manipulator, employs a modular mechanism design with joint-mounted actuators based on brushless motors and harmonic drive gear reducers. Direct joint torque control at the servo level causes these high-output joint drives to behave like direct-drive actuators, facilitating the implementation of an effective impedance control scheme. The redundant, but conservative motion control system models the manipulator as a spring-loaded linkage with viscous damping and rotary inertia at each joint. This approach allows for real time, sensor-driven control of manipulator pose using a hierarchy of competing rules, or objective functions, to avoid unplanned collisions with objects in the workplace, to produce energy-efficient, graceful motion, to increase leverage, to control effective impedance at the tool or to favor overloaded joints
