Many opportunities exist for conducting stateside professional improvement workshops to train Extension professionals from developing countries. To conduct a successful workshop it is important to understand the needs of the partner country and identify participants who can use their workshop training to address those needs. An effective workshop will have high-quality field trips, practical classroom instruction, and opportunities for cultural exchange. Pre-workshop planning and close attention to logistical issues are essential to the success of the workshop. Good evaluation of the workshop is important to measure the impacts of the workshop and provide input for improving future workshops

Geologic Descriptions and Coal Analyses for 1982 Coal Drilling in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Eastern Kentucky

This report contains core descriptions, lithologic logs, and analyses of coal from 21 stratigraphic test holes drilled in 1982 in the Daniel Boone National Forest, including the Redbird Purchase Unit, in eastern Kentucky. The test holes ranged in depth from 85 to 1,988 feet and averaged about 700 feet. A total of 89 coal samples were analyzed. Results of analyses (on the as-received basis) showed the following ranges: ash, 2.37 to 28.8 percent; sulfur, 0.3 to 8.4 percent; and Btu, 9,017 to 14,550 per pound

Familial Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Associated with Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis

Background: This is a report of a patient with a novel genotype phenotype relationship of a c804 mutation of the RET proto-oncogene manifesting as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and cutaneous lichen amyloidosis (CLA). Summary: Clinical data were obtained for patient appearance and laboratory results. Analyzed were histopathology of the skin lesion and thyroid gland, genetic mutation, and family pedigree. Skin histology and histochemistry were consistent with CLA. Serum calcitonin levels were moderately elevated. Thyroid histology demonstrated a 4mm focus of MTC. Measurements of serum parathormone, calcium, and plasma metanephrines were normal. DNA analysis demonstrated a mutation in codon 804 of the RET proto-oncogene resulting in a Valine to Methionine (V804M) substitution. Genetic testing in two siblings revealed the same mutation. Conclusions: This is the first description of a patient with CLA not associated with a mutation in codon 634. Insulinlike Growth Factor 1- and 2-Augmented Collagen Gel Repair of Facial Osseous Defects

BACKGROUND: Defects of the facial bone structure are common problems for the facial plastic surgeon. Native type 1 collagen gels (T1CGs) have been shown to mediate repair of facial critical-size defects in rat models. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of T1CG augmented with insulinlike growth factor (IGF) 1, IGF-2, and a combination of IGF-1 and IGF-2 on the repair of facial critical-size defects in a rodent model. METHODS: Twenty-four retired male breeder Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 animals. Facial critical-size defects were created by removing the nasalis bones with a bone-cutting drill. Defects were treated with 300 pg of type 1 collagen gel (T1CG), T1CG augmented with 3 microg of IGF-1, T1CG augmented with 3 microg of IGF-2, or T1CG augmented with a combination of 3 microg of IGF-1 and 3 microg of IGF-2. After 30 days the animals were examined at necropsy with precise planimetry, histological analysis of new bone growth, and radiodensitometric analysis of bone thickness. RESULTS: Radiodensitometric measurements showed that IGF-2 augmentation resulted in greatest osseous healing, with measurements being statistically significant over those of all other groups (P\u3c or = .03). Combination IGF-1 and IGF-2 had osseous healing that was intermediate between IGF-1 augmentation and IGF-2 augmentation alone, with measurements being statistically significant over those of unaugmented gels (P CONCLUSION: Collagen gels augmented with IGF significantly enhance the osteoconductive repair of nasal critical-size defects in a rodent model, with IGF-2 showing highest efficacy
