Preferred Tone Reproduction of Images on Soft Displays

    Get PDF
A series of psychophysical experiments have been carried out to investigate the preferred subjective contrast of displayed images. The contrast of the displayed images was evaluated with the use of a gamma model which involved cascading the gamma values of the individual components of the imaging system. The preferred contrast was found to be scene dependent and varied between 1.56 and 1.96 when images where viewed in total darkness. Probit analysis on the distributions of preferred gamma values showed that the probits of those scenes which had extremes in contrast were outside the confidence limits of other more representative scenes. The validity and implications of applying the gamma model to determine the tone reproduction of an imaging system has been investigated

Pseudo-Schwarzschild Spherical Accretion as a Classical Black Hole Analogue

We demonstrate that a spherical accretion onto astrophysical black holes, under the influence of Newtonian or various post-Newtonian pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potentials, may constitute a concrete example of classical analogue gravity naturally found in the Universe. We analytically calculate the corresponding analogue Hawking temperature as a function of the minimum number of physical parameters governing the accretion flow. We study both the polytropic and the isothermal accretion. We show that unlike in a general relativistic spherical accretion, analogue white hole solutions can never be obtained in such post-Newtonian systems. We also show that an isothermal spherical accretion is a remarkably simple example in which the only one information--the temperature of the fluid, is sufficient to completely describe an analogue gravity system. For both types of accretion, the analogue Hawking temperature may become higher than the usual Hawking temperature. However, the analogue Hawking temperature for accreting astrophysical black holes is considerably lower compared with the temperature of the accreting fluid.Comment: Final Version to appear in the journal General Relativity & Gravitation, Volume 27, Issue 11, 2005. 17 pages, Two colour and one black and white figures. Smooth Paths on Three Dimensional Lattice

    Get PDF
A particular class of random walks with a spin factor on a three dimensional cubic lattice is studied. This three dimensional random walk model is a simple generalization of random walk for the two dimensional Ising model. All critical diffusion constants and associated critical exponents are calculated. Continuum field theories such as Klein-Gordon, Dirac and massive Chern-Simons theories are constructed near several critical points.Comment: 7 pages,NUP-A-94-

Spectroscopy by frequency entangled photon pairs

Quantum spectroscopy was performed using the frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. An absorptive sample was placed in front of the idler photon detector, and the frequency of signal photons was resolved by a diffraction grating. The absorption spectrum of the sample was measured by counting the coincidences, and the result is in agreement with the one measured by a conventional spectrophotometer with a classical light source.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Background Independent Quantum Mechanics and Gravity

We argue that the demand of background independence in a quantum theory of gravity calls for an extension of standard geometric quantum mechanics. We discuss a possible kinematical and dynamical generalization of the latter by way of a quantum covariance of the state space. Specifically, we apply our scheme to the problem of a background independent formulation of Matrix Theory.Comment: 9 pages, LaTe

The Extended Loop Group: An Infinite Dimensional Manifold Associated with the Loop Space

    Get PDF
A set of coordinates in the non parametric loop-space is introduced. We show that these coordinates transform under infinite dimensional linear representations of the diffeomorphism group. An extension of the group of loops in terms of these objects is proposed. The enlarged group behaves locally as an infinite dimensional Lie group. Ordinary loops form a subgroup of this group. The algebraic properties of this new mathematical structure are analized in detail. Applications of the formalism to field theory, quantum gravity and knot theory are considered.Comment: The resubmited paper contains the title and abstract, that were omitted in the previous version. 42 pages, report IFFI/93.0

    Twisted sectors in three-dimensional gravity

    Get PDF
Twisted sectors --solutions to the equations of motion with non-trivial monodromies-- of three dimensional Euclidean gravity are studied. We argue that upon quantization this new sector of the theory provides the necessary (and no more) degrees of freedom to account for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.Comment: An unnecessary restriction removed. Corrections to flat-space particle dynamics arising from space granularity

The construction of effective Hamiltonians describing corrections to flat space particle dynamics arising from the granularity of space at very short distances is discussed in the framework of an heuristic approach to the semiclassical limit of loop quantum gravity. After some general motivation of the subject, a brief non-specialist introduction to the basic tools employed in the loop approach is presented. The heuristical semiclassical limit is subsequently defined and the application to the case of photons and spin 1/2 fermions is described. The resulting modified Maxwell and Dirac Hamiltonians, leading in particular to Planck scale corrections in the energy-momentum relations, are presented. Alternative interpretations of the results and their limitations, together with other approaches are briefly discussed along the text. Three topics related to the above methods are reviewed: (1) The determination of bounds to the Lorentz violating parameters in the fermionic sector, obtained from clock comparison experiments.(2) The calculation of radiative corrections in preferred frames associated to space granularity in the framework of a Yukawa model for the interactions and (3) The calculation of synchrotron radiation in the framework of the Myers-Pospelov effective theories describing Lorentz invariance violations, as well as a generalized approach to radiation in Planck scale modified electrodynamics. The above exploratory results show that quantum gravity phenomenology provides observational guidance in the construction of quantum gravity theories and opens up the possibility of probing Planck scale physics.Comment: 49 pages, 6 figures and 4 tables.
