The EET Horizontal Tails Investigation and the EET Lateral Controls Investigation
In the energy efficient transport (EET) Horizontal Tails Investigation, aerodynamic data were measured for five different horizontal tails on a full span model with a wide body fuselage. Three of the horizontal tails were low tail configurations and two were T tail configurations. All tails were tested in conjunction with two wings, a current wide body wing and a high aspect ratio supercritical wing. Local downwash angles and dynamic pressures in the vicinity of the tails were measured using a yaw head rake. The results provide a comparison of the aerodynamic characteristics of the two wing configurations at trimmed conditions for Mach numbers between 0.60 and 0.90. In the EET Lateral Controls Investigation, the control effectiveness of a conventional set of lateral controls was measured over a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.90 on a high aspect ratio supercritical wing semispan model. The conventional controls included a high speed aileron, a low speed aileron, and six spoiler segments. The wing was designed so that the last 25% of the chord is removable to facilitate testing of various control systems. The current status and an indication of the data obtained in these investigations are presented
Passive propellant system
The system utilizes a spherical tank structure A separated into two equal volume compartments by a flat bulkhead B. Each compartment has four similar gallery channel legs located in the principal vehicle axes, ensuring that bulk propellant will contact at least one gallery leg during vehicle maneuvers. The forward compartment gallery channel legs collect propellant and feed it into the aft compartment through communication screens which protrude into the aft compartment. The propellant is then collected by the screened gallery channels in the aft compartment and supplied to the propellant outlet. The invention resides in the independent gallery assembly and screen structure by means of which propellant flow from forward to aft compartments is maintained. Liquid surface tension of the liquid on the screens is used to control liquid flow. The system provides gas-free propellants in low or zero-g environments regardless of axial accelerations and propellant orientation in bulk regions of the vessel
Macro Dark Matter
Dark matter is a vital component of the current best model of our universe,
CDM. There are leading candidates for what the dark matter could be
(e.g. weakly-interacting massive particles, or axions), but no compelling
observational or experimental evidence exists to support these particular
candidates, nor any beyond-the-Standard-Model physics that might produce such
candidates. This suggests that other dark matter candidates, including ones
that might arise in the Standard Model, should receive increased attention.
Here we consider a general class of dark matter candidates with characteristic
masses and interaction cross-sections characterized in units of grams and
cm, respectively -- we therefore dub these macroscopic objects as Macros.
Such dark matter candidates could potentially be assembled out of Standard
Model particles (quarks and leptons) in the early universe. A combination of
Earth-based, astrophysical, and cosmological observations constrain a portion
of the Macro parameter space. A large region of parameter space remains, most
notably for nuclear-dense objects with masses in the range g and
g, although the lower mass window is closed

Healthiness from Duality
Healthiness is a good old question in program logics that dates back to
Dijkstra. It asks for an intrinsic characterization of those predicate
transformers which arise as the (backward) interpretation of a certain class of
programs. There are several results known for healthiness conditions: for
deterministic programs, nondeterministic ones, probabilistic ones, etc.
Building upon our previous works on so-called state-and-effect triangles, we
contribute a unified categorical framework for investigating healthiness
conditions. We find the framework to be centered around a dual adjunction
induced by a dualizing object, together with our notion of relative
Eilenberg-Moore algebra playing fundamental roles too. The latter notion seems
interesting in its own right in the context of monads, Lawvere theories and

Ultra-Efficient Cooling of Resonators: Beating Sideband Cooling with Quantum Control
The present state-of-the-art in cooling mechanical resonators is a version of
"sideband" cooling. Here we present a method that uses the same configuration
as sideband cooling --- coupling the resonator to be cooled to a second
microwave (or optical) auxiliary resonator --- but will cool significantly
colder. This is achieved by varying the strength of the coupling between the
two resonators over a time on the order of the period of the mechanical
resonator. As part of our analysis, we also obtain a method for fast,

Surface states in nearly modulated systems
A Landau model is used to study the phase behavior of the surface layer for
magnetic and cholesteric liquid crystal systems that are at or near a Lifshitz
point marking the boundary between modulated and homogeneous bulk phases. The
model incorporates surface and bulk fields and includes a term in the free
energy proportional to the square of the second derivative of the order
parameter in addition to the usual term involving the square of the first
derivative. In the limit of vanishing bulk field, three distinct types of
surface ordering are possible: a wetting layer, a non-wet layer having a small
deviation from bulk order, and a different non-wet layer with a large deviation
from bulk order which decays non-monotonically as distance from the wall
increases. In particular the large deviation non-wet layer is a feature of
systems at the Lifshitz point and also those having only homogeneous bulk

Polarization--universal rejection filtering by ambichiral structures made of indefinite dielectric--magnetic materials
An ambichiral structure comprising sheets of an anisotropic dielectric
material rejects normally incident plane waves of one circular polarization
(CP) state but not of the other CP state, in its fundamental Bragg regime.
However, if the same structure is made of an dielectric--magnetic material with
indefinite permittivity and permeability dyadics, it may function as a
polarization--universal rejection filter because two of the four planewave
components of the electromagnetic field phasors in each sheet are of the
positive--phase--velocity type and two are of the negative--phase--velocity

Conditions for the Quantum to Classical Transition: Trajectories vs. Phase Space Distributions
We contrast two sets of conditions that govern the transition in which
classical dynamics emerges from the evolution of a quantum system. The first
was derived by considering the trajectories seen by an observer (dubbed the
``strong'' transition) [Bhattacharya, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85: 4852
(2000)], and the second by considering phase-space densities (the ``weak''
transition) [Greenbaum, et al., Chaos 15, 033302 (2005)]. On the face of it
these conditions appear rather different. We show, however, that in the
semiclassical regime, in which the action of the system is large compared to
, and the measurement noise is small, they both offer an essentially
equivalent local picture. Within this regime, the weak conditions dominate
while in the opposite regime where the action is not much larger than Planck's
