    Technological change and human resource development practices in Asia: a study of Singapore-based companies

    Technological change is a constant phenomenon in contemporary organizations. How to prepare employees for technological change has increasingly become an issue for human resource development theory and practice. This study investigated the human resource development practices of organizations in Singapore, where companies are continuously responding to rapid technological changes in order to remain competitive. The results show similar patterns of responses across business sectors; however, some differences were found in the transport and communications sectors. On-the-job training was reported as the most frequently used training method to address organizational change needs. The discussion and recommendations focus on the need for improved change management approaches

    Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is thought to be an acquired osteochondral disorder, and its etiology may be multi-factorial. Trauma, both acute and repetitive events, has previously been proposed as a potential cause for OCD development. We present two cases of skeletally immature males who developed a symptomatic OCD lesion following a femoral condyle bone contusion. These cases suggest that an acute traumatic event may lead to the development of OCD of the knee

    Aortic valve replacement in neonates and infants: An analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database

    ObjectiveWe sought to describe early outcomes of aortic valve replacement in neonates and infants across a large multicenter cohort.MethodsNeonates and infants in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database undergoing nontruncal aortic valve replacement with the Ross-Konno procedure, Ross procedure, or homograft replacement from 2000 to 2009 were included. Preoperative characteristics, operative data, and early outcomes are described.ResultsA total of 160 patients (43 neonates, 117 infants) from 47 centers were included. Society of Thoracic Surgeons–defined preoperative risk factors were present in 76 patients (48%) and were most prevalent in neonates (67%) and patients undergoing homograft aortic valve replacement (93%). Concomitant arch repair or mitral valve surgery was performed in 30 patients (19%) and 19 patients (12%), respectively. Postoperative mechanical circulatory support was used in 17 patients (11%). Overall in-hospital mortality was 18% and was highest for neonates (28%) and patients undergoing homograft aortic valve replacement (40%). Concomitant arch repair was associated with higher in-hospital mortality (33% vs 15%, P = .02), whereas concurrent mitral valve surgery was not (21% vs 18%, P = .73). Postoperative mechanical circulatory support was also associated with increased in-hospital mortality (65% vs 13%, P < .0001).ConclusionsNeonates and infants undergoing aortic valve replacement are a high-risk group, with hospital mortality comparable with some of the highest risk procedures in this age group. The requirement for arch repair or postoperative mechanical circulatory support was associated with an increased risk of death in this cohort

    Loss of Nmp4 optimizes osteogenic metabolism and secretion to enhance bone quality

    A goal of osteoporosis therapy is to restore lost bone with structurally sound tissue. Mice lacking the transcription factor Nuclear Matrix Protein 4 (Nmp4, Zfp384, Ciz, ZNF384) respond to several classes of osteoporosis drugs with enhanced bone formation compared to wild type (WT) animals. Nmp4-/- mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells (MSPCs) exhibit an accelerated and enhanced mineralization during osteoblast differentiation. To address the mechanisms underlying this hyper-anabolic phenotype, we carried out RNA-sequencing and molecular and cellular analyses of WT and Nmp4-/- MSPCs during osteogenesis to define pathways and mechanisms associated with elevated matrix production. We determined that Nmp4 has a broad impact on the transcriptome during osteogenic differentiation, contributing to the expression of over 5,000 genes. Phenotypic anchoring of transcriptional data was performed for the hypothesis-testing arm through analysis of cell metabolism, protein synthesis and secretion, and bone material properties. Mechanistic studies confirmed that Nmp4-/- MSPCs exhibited an enhanced capacity for glycolytic conversion- a key step in bone anabolism. Nmp4-/- cells showed elevated collagen translation and secretion. Expression of matrix genes that contribute to bone material-level mechanical properties were elevated in Nmp4-/- cells, an observation that was supported by biomechanical testing of bone samples from Nmp4-/- and WT mice. We conclude that loss of Nmp4 increases the magnitude of glycolysis upon the metabolic switch, which fuels the conversion of the osteoblast into a super-secretor of matrix resulting in more bone with improvements in intrinsic quality

    [EN] Agglomerations and firm performance: who benefits and how much? Regional Studies. Agglomeration can generate gains. If it does, how does it work and how are those gains distributed across agglomerated firms? The paper examines the effect of localization externalities on innovation. Localization externalities are measured as industry specialization or a firm s colocation in a relatively high own-industry employment region. By analyzing a large dataset of 6697 firms integrated with another regional agglomeration-related dataset, results show that (1) co-location in an agglomeration has a positive influence on a firm s innovative performance; and (2) firms benefit heterogeneously from agglomerations, with benefits being distributed asymmetrically.     Mice with altered serotonin 2C receptor RNA editing display characteristics of Prader–Willi syndrome

    RNA transcripts encoding the 2C-subtype of serotonin (5HT2C) receptor undergo up to five adenosine-to-inosine editing events to encode twenty-four protein isoforms. To examine the effects of altered 5HT2C editing in vivo, we generated mutant mice solely expressing the fully-edited (VGV) isoform of the receptor. Mutant animals present phenotypic characteristics of Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) including a failure to thrive, decreased somatic growth, neonatal muscular hypotonia, and reduced food consumption followed by post-weaning hyperphagia. Though previous studies have identified alterations in both 5HT2C receptor expression and 5HT2C-mediated behaviors in both PWS patients and mouse models of this disorder, to our knowledge the 5HT2C gene is the first locus outside the PWS imprinted region in which mutations can phenocopy numerous aspects of this syndrome. These results not only strengthen the link between the molecular etiology of PWS and altered 5HT2C expression, but also demonstrate the importance of normal patterns of 5HT2C RNA editing in vivo

    Utility of Different Blood Pressure Measurement Components in Childhood to Predict Adult Carotid Intima-Media Thickness : The i3C Consortium Study

    Childhood blood pressure (BP) levels predict adult subclinical atherosclerosis. However, the best childhood BP component for prediction has not been determined. This study comprised 5925 participants aged 3 to 18 years from 6 cohorts who were followed into adulthood (mean follow-up 25.8 +/- 6.2 years). Childhood BP was measured by using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer in all cohorts. Study-specific carotid intima-media thickness 90th percentile was used to define subclinical atherosclerosis. Per SD change in the predictor, childhood systolic BP (SBP; age- and sex-adjusted odds ratio [95% CI], 1.24 [1.13-1.37]), mean arterial pressure (1.10 [1.07-1.13]), and pulse pressure (1.15 [1.05-1.27]) were associated with increased adulthood intima-media thickness. In age- and sex-adjusted analyses, area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for SBP (C value [95% CI], 0.677 [0.657-0.704]) showed significantly improved prediction compared with diastolic BP (0.669 [0.646-0.693], P=0.006) or mean arterial pressure (0.674 [0.653-0.699], P=0.01). Pulse pressure provided a C value that was not different from SBP (0.676 [0.653-0.699], P=0.16). Combining different BP components did not improve prediction over SBP measurement alone. Based on the associations with adult carotid intima-media thickness, cut points for elevated SBP were 105 mmHg for 3- to 6-year-old boys, 108 mmHg for 3- to 6-year-old girls, 108 mmHg for 7- to 12-year-old boys, 106 mmHg for 7- to 12-year-old girls, 123 mmHg for 13- to 18-year-old boys, and 115 mmHg for 13- to 18-year-old girls. Our analyses suggest that several childhood BP measurement components are related to adulthood carotid intima-media thickness. Of these, SBP provided the best predictive ability.Peer reviewe
