Use of ERTS imagery for natural resources research and development in Lesotho
The author has identified the following significant results. As far as the geological aspects of the project were concerned, the project was a success. It was concluded that: (1) It is possible to trace the lithological boundaries between sedimentary rocks and basaltic rocks, both extrusive and intrusive. (2) It was possible to localize sponges in the mountain areas, some of which may conceal undiscovered diamond pipes. (3) Possible main structural axes were localized within the framework of lineaments. Due to drought which occured at the time the images were gathered by ERTS-1, the usefulness of the data was limited for agricultural purposes
What drives diesel fuel prices?
Historically, gasoline has commanded a premium over diesel, but that changed in mid-to-late 2007, when diesel rose above gasoline. In 2007 and 2008, however, gasoline traded higher than diesel only 21.1 percent of the time. This deviation from historic norms raises an interesting question--what drives diesel prices? As with virtually all petroleum-derived products, the story begins with oil prices. Seasonal patterns also play a significant role. Demand for a range of oil-based products changes with the weather, and prices fluctuate as refiners adjust their output mix. Government regulations are another source of price variability. Earlier this decade, new standards aimed at reducing diesel fuel's sulfur content required further processing that increased refinery costs and prices for consumers. Finally, short-term changes in supply and demand--including imports--factor into pricing on a day-to-day basis. Our model suggests that spot diesel should rise 25 cents a gallon over the next six months and 41 cents a gallon over the next 18 months.Petroleum products - Prices ; Petroleum industry and trade ; Energy consumption ; Econometric models
Resolving the structure of TiBe
There has been considerable controversy regarding the structure of
TiBe, which is variously reported as hexagonal and tetragonal. Lattice
dynamics simulations based on density functional theory show the tetragonal
phase space group to be more stable over all temperatures, while the
hexagonal phase exhibits an imaginary phonon mode, which, if followed, would
lead to the cell adopting the tetragonal structure. We then report the
predicted ground state elastic constants and temperature dependence of the bulk

Theoretical study of ionization of an alkali atom adsorbed on a metal surface by laser assisted subfemtosecond pulse
The first numerical simulation of the process of ionization of an atom
adsorbed on a metal surface by the subfemtosecond pulse is presented. The
streaking scheme is considered, when a weak sub-femtosecond pulse comes
together with a strong IR pulse with a variable delay between them. The problem
is analyzed with numerical solving the non-stationary Schroedinger equation in
the cylindrical coordinate. The results obtained are compared with ones in the
gas phase. We show that the surface influences the DDCS, but the observation of
this influence, beside the trivial polarization shift of the energy of the
initial state, requires a quite high experimental resolution
Quantum corrections to the Larmor radiation formula in scalar electrodynamics
We use the semi-classical approximation in perturbative scalar quantum
electrodynamics to calculate the quantum correction to the Larmor radiation
formula to first order in Planck's constant in the non-relativistic
approximation, choosing the initial state of the charged particle to be a
momentum eigenstate. We calculate this correction in two cases: in the first
case the charged particle is accelerated by a time-dependent but
space-independent vector potential whereas in the second case it is accelerated
by a time-independent vector potential which is a function of one spatial
coordinate. We find that the corrections in these two cases are different even
for a charged particle with the same classical motion. The correction in each
case turns out to be non-local in time in contrast to the classical

Advanced manufacturing development of a composite empennage component for L-1011 aircraft. Phase 3: Production readiness verification testing
Twenty-two specimens of each of two key structural elements of the Advance Composite Vertical Fin (ACVF) were fabricated and tested. One element represented the front spar at the fuselage attachment area and the other element represented the cover at the fuselage joint area. Ten specimens of each element were selected for static testing. The coefficient of variation resulting from the tests was 3.28 percent for the ten cover specimens and 6.11 percent for the ten spar specimens, which compare well with metallic structures. The remaining twelve cover and twelve spar specimens were durability tested in environmental chambers which permitted the temperature and humidity environment to be cycled as well as the applied loads. Results of the durability tests indicated that such components will survive the service environment
The interpretive approach to religious education : challenging Thompson's interpretation
In a recent book chapter, Matthew Thompson makes some criticisms of my work, including the interpretive approach to religious education and the research and activity of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit. Against the background of a discussion of religious education in the public sphere, my response challenges Thompson’s account, commenting on his own position in relation to dialogical approaches to religious education. The article rehearses my long held view that the ideal form of religious education in fully state funded schools of a liberal democracy should be ‘secular’ but not ‘secularist’; there should be no implication of an axiomatic secular humanist interpretation of religions
