The Frequency Dependence of Critical-velocity Behavior in Oscillatory Flow of Superfluid Helium-4 Through a 2-micrometer by 2-micrometer Aperture in a Thin Foil
The critical-velocity behavior of oscillatory superfluid Helium-4 flow
through a 2-micrometer by 2-micrometer aperture in a 0.1-micrometer-thick foil
has been studied from 0.36 K to 2.10 K at frequencies from less than 50 Hz up
to above 1880 Hz. The pressure remained less than 0.5 bar. In early runs during
which the frequency remained below 400 Hz, the critical velocity was a
nearly-linearly decreasing function of increasing temperature throughout the
region of temperature studied. In runs at the lowest frequencies, isolated 2 Pi
phase slips could be observed at the onset of dissipation. In runs with
frequencies higher than 400 Hz, downward curvature was observed in the decrease
of critical velocity with increasing temperature. In addition, above 500 Hz an
alteration in supercritical behavior was seen at the lower temperatures,
involving the appearance of large energy-loss events. These irregular events
typically lasted a few tens of half-cycles of oscillation and could involve
hundreds of times more energy loss than would have occurred in a single
complete 2 Pi phase slip at maximum flow. The temperatures at which this
altered behavior was observed rose with frequency, from ~ 0.6 K and below, at

Universal transport in 2D granular superconductors
The transport properties of quench condensed granular superconductors are
presented and analyzed. These systems exhibit transitions from insulating to
superconducting behavior as a function of inter-grain spacing.
Superconductivity is characterized by broad transitions in which the resistance
drops exponentially with reducing temperature. The slope of the log R versus T
curves turns out to be universaly dependent on the normal state film resistance
for all measured granular systems. It does not depend on the material, critical
temperature, geometry, or experimental set-up. We discuss possible physical

Early stage morphology of quench condensed Ag, Pb and Pb/Ag hybrid films
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has been used to study the morphology of
Ag, Pb and Pb/Ag bilayer films fabricated by quench condensation of the
elements onto cold (T=77K), inert and atomically flat Highly Oriented Pyrolytic
Graphite (HOPG) substrates. All films are thinner than 10 nm and show a
granular structure that is consistent with earlier studies of QC films. The
average lateral diameter, , of the Ag grains, however, depends on
whether the Ag is deposited directly on HOPG ( = 13 nm) or on a Pb
film consisting of a single layer of Pb grains ( = 26.8 nm). In
addition, the critical thickness for electrical conduction () of Pb/Ag
films on inert glass substrates is substantially larger than for pure Ag films.
These results are evidence that the structure of the underlying substrate
exerts an influence on the size of the grains in QC films. We propose a

A paradox of syntactic priming: why response tendencies show priming for passives, and response latencies show priming for actives
Speakers tend to repeat syntactic structures across sentences, a phenomenon called syntactic priming. Although it has been suggested that repeating syntactic structures should result in speeded responses, previous research has focused on effects in response tendencies. We investigated syntactic priming effects simultaneously in response tendencies and response latencies for active and passive transitive sentences in a picture description task. In Experiment 1, there were priming effects in response tendencies for passives and in response latencies for actives. However, when participants' pre-existing preference for actives was altered in Experiment 2, syntactic priming occurred for both actives and passives in response tendencies as well as in response latencies. This is the first investigation of the effects of structure frequency on both response tendencies and latencies in syntactic priming. We discuss the implications of these data for current theories of syntactic processing
Estudo morfológico de superfícies ósseas após secção por pontas diamantadas ou laser de érbio: YAG
The purpose of this study was to analyze bone surfaces cut by Er:YAG laser or by diamond points. Five male rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were killed by lethal dose of phenobarbital, and selected bones were cut by Er:YAG laser at 300 mJ and 2 Hz, or by diamond points. The samples were submitted to evaluation through SEM at standard magnifications. By analyzing the surfaces, the authors could observe a pattern for each group, with a smoother surface in the laser cut group than in the diamond cut group. In higher magnifications, the images suggest melting and solidifying in the laser group. The authors conclude that the laser was effective in bone cutting. However, it was responsible for morphological changes that suggest a significant temperature increase.O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar morfologicamente as superfícies ósseas resultantes da secção por pontas diamantadas ou por laser de érbio:YAG. Cinco ratos (Rattus norvegicus albinus foram sacrificados por dose letal de fenobarbital. Após a execução deste procedimento, os ossos predeterminados foram submetidos à secção por pontas diamantadas ou por laser de érbio:YAG em uma energia de 300 mJ por pulso e taxa de repetição de 2 Hz. As amostras foram submetidas a análise em microscópio eletrônico de varredura, revelando a existência de um padrão para as secções obtidas com cada instrumento, sendo verificada uma superfície mais regular nas amostras seccionadas com o laser de érbio:YAG. Em aumentos da ordem de 3000 vezes, pode-se observar indícios de fusão e seqüente solidificação das superfícies seccionadas por meio do laser de érbio:YAG. Conclui-se que o laser de érbio:YAG foi eficaz na remoção de tecido ósseo, mas que, nos parâmetros utilizados neste estudo, foi responsável por alterações morfológicas sugestivas de significativo aumento de temperatura, não devendo ser indicado, nestas condições, para a execução de secções ósseas

Anisotropic Magnetoconductance in Quench-Condensed Ultrathin Beryllium Films
Near the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition, quench-condensed
ultrathin Be films show a large magnetoconductance which is highly anisotropic
in the direction of the applied field. Film conductance can drop as much as
seven orders of magnitude in a weak perpendicular field (< 1 T), but is
insensitive to a parallel field in the same field range. We believe that this
negative magnetoconductance is due to the field de-phasing of the
superconducting pair wavefunction. This idea enables us to extract the finite
superconducting phase coherence length in nearly superconducting films. Our
data indicate that this local phase coherence persists even in highly
