    Effects of membrane depolarization and changes in extracellular [K+] on the Ca2+ transients of fast skeletal muscle fibers. Implications for muscle fatigue

    Repetitive activation of skeletal muscle fibers leads to a reduced transmembrane K+ gradient. The resulting membrane depolarization has been proposed to play a major role in the onset of muscle fatigue. We used a double Vaseline gap method to simultaneously record action potentials (AP) and Ca2+ transients from rested frog fibers activated by single and tetanic stimulation (10 pulses, 100 Hz) at various \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}[K+]o [ {\text{K}}^{ + } ]_{\text{o}} \end{document} and membrane potentials. Depolarization resulting from current injection or raised \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}[K+]o [ {\text{K}}^{ + } ]_{\text{o}} \end{document} produced an increase in the resting [Ca2+]. Ca2+ transients elicited by single stimulation were potentiated by depolarization from −80 to −60 mV but markedly depressed by further depolarization. Potentiation was inversely correlated with a reduction in the amplitude, overshoot and duration of APs. Similar effects were found for the Ca2+ transients elicited by the first pulse of 100 Hz trains. Depression or block of Ca2+ transient in response to the 2nd to 10th pulses of 100 Hz trains was observed at smaller depolarizations as compared to that seen when using single stimulation. Changes in Ca2+ transients along the trains were associated with impaired or abortive APs.     Body indices and basic vital signs in Helicobacter pylori positive and negative persons

    It has been hypothesized that Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection may contribute to reduced stature, risk of hypertension or obesity. The aim was to evaluate body indices in Hp positive and negative persons. A total of 2436 subjects (4–100 years old) were tested for Hp status by 13Curea breath test. Data on height and weight were collected for 84%, and blood pressure for 80% of the study subjects. The prevalence of Hp infection was 41.6%. The odds ratio for a 10-year increase in age was 1.21 (95% CI 1.17–1.25, p-value <0.001). Statistically significant negative association of Hp positivity with body height was most pronounced in the younger age groups, while a positive association of Hp positivity with body mass index was only seen in those aged 15+ years. There was a negative effect of Hp positivity on systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects below 25 and a relatively strong positive effect on blood pressure in subjects over 65 years. Residual confounding by social characteristics as a possible explanation for the associations of Hp positivity with height and blood pressure cannot be excluded. Unmeasured factors related to social and family environment may cause the apparent association between Hp positivity and children’s growth and blood pressure

    Liver surgery in the presence of cirrhosis or steatosis: Is morbidity increased?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background data</p> <p>The prevalence of steatosis and hepatitis-related liver cirrhosis is dramatically increasing together worldwide. Cirrhosis and, more recently, steatosis are recognized as a clinically important feature that influences patient morbidity and mortality after hepatic resection when compared with patients with healthy liver.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To review present knowledge regarding how the presence of cirrhosis or steatosis can influence postoperative outcome after liver resection.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A critical review of the English literature was performed to provide data concerning postoperative outcome of patients presenting injured livers who required hepatectomy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In clinical studies, the presence of steatosis impaired postoperative outcome regardless the severity and quality of the hepatic fat. A great improvement in postoperative outcome has been achieved using modern and multidisciplinary preoperative workup in cirrhotic patients. Due to the lack of a proper classification for morbidity and a clear definition of hepatic failure in the literature, the comparison between different studies is very limited. Although, many surgical strategies have been developed to protect injured liver surgery, no one have gained worldwide acceptance.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Surgeons should take the presence of underlying injured livers into account when planning the extent and type of hepatic surgery. Preoperative and perioperative interventions should be considered to minimize the additional damage. Further randomized trials should focus on the evaluation of novel preoperative strategies to minimize risk in these patients. Each referral liver center should have the commitment to report all deaths related to postoperative hepatic failure and to use a common classification system for postoperative complications.</p

    Unified Passivity-Based Visual Control for Moving Object Tracking

    In this chapter, a unified passivity-based visual servoing control structure con-sidering a vision system mounted on the robot, is presented. This controller, is suit-able to be applied for robotic arms, mobile robots as well as for mobile manipula-tors. The proposed control law makes the robot able to perform a moving target tracking in its workspace. Taking advantage of the passivity properties of the con-trol system and considering exact knowledge of the target?s velocity, the asymptotic convergence to zero of the control errors are proved. Later, it is carried a robustness analysis out based on 2-gain performance, hence proving that control errors are ultimately bounded even when there exist bounded errors in the estimation of the target velocity. Both, numerical simulation and experimental results illustrate the performance of the algorithm in a robotic manipulator, a mobile robot and also in a mobile manipulator.Fil: Roberti, Flavio.     Assessing the internal validity of a household survey-based food security measure adapted for use in Iran

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prevalence of food insecurity is an indicator of material well-being in an area of basic need. The U.S. Food Security Module has been adapted for use in a wide variety of cultural and linguistic settings around the world. We assessed the internal validity of the adapted U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module to measure adult and child food insecurity in Isfahan, Iran, using statistical methods based on the Rasch measurement model.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module was translated into Farsi and after adaptation, administered to a representative sample. Data were provided by 2,004 randomly selected households from all sectors of the population of Isfahan, Iran, during 2005.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>53.1 percent reported that their food had run out at some time during the previous 12 months and they did not have money to buy more, while 26.7 percent reported that an adult had cut the size of a meal or skipped a meal because there was not enough money for food, and 7.2 percent reported that an adult did not eat for a whole day because there was not enough money for food. The severity of the items in the adult scale, estimated under Rasch-model assumptions, covered a range of 6.65 logistic units, and those in the child scale 11.68 logistic units. Most Item-infit statistics were near unity, and none exceeded 1.20.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The range of severity of items provides measurement coverage across a wide range of severity of food insecurity for both adults and children. Both scales demonstrated acceptable levels of internal validity, although several items should be improved. The similarity of the response patterns in the Isfahan and the U.S. suggests that food insecurity is experienced, managed, and described similarly in the two countries.</p
