    Descendants of the Jurassic turiasaurs from Iberia found refuge in the Early Cretaceous of western USA

    A new, largely complete eusauropod dinosaur with cranial and postcranial elements from two skeletons, Mierasaurus bobyoungi gen. nov., sp. nov. from the lower Yellow Cat Member (Early Cretaceous) of Utah (USA), is the first recognized member of Turiasauria from North America. Moreover, according to our phylogenetic results, Moabosaurus utahensis from the lower Yellow Cat Member of Utah (USA) is also a member of this clade. This group of non-neosauropod eusauropods, which now includes five genera (Losillasaurus, Turiasaurus, Mierasaurus, Moabosaurus and Zby), was previously known only from the Jurassic of Europe. These recent discoveries in Utah suggest that turiasaurs as a lineage survived the Jurassic-Cretaceous extinction boundary and expanded their known range, at least, into western North America. The revised spatiotemporal distribution of turiasaurs is consistent with the presence of a land connection between North America and Europe sometime during the late Tithonian to Valanginian (c.147-133 Ma). Mierasaurus and Moabosaurus are the only non-neosauropod eusauropods known from North America, despite being younger than the classic neosauropods of the Morrison Formation (c.150 Ma)

    Semantic-aware dynamic retrospective-prospective reasoning for event-level video question answering

    Event-Level Video Question Answering (EVQA) requires complex reasoning across video events to obtain the visual information needed to provide optimal answers. However, despite significant progress in model performance, few studies have focused on using the explicit semantic connections between the question and visual information especially at the event level. There is need for using such semantic connections to facilitate complex reasoning across video frames. Therefore, we propose a semantic-aware dynamic retrospective-prospective reasoning approach for video-based question answering. Specifically, we explicitly use the Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) structure of the question in the dynamic reasoning process where we decide to move to the next frame based on which part of the SRL structure (agent, verb, patient, etc.) of the question is being focused on. We conduct experiments on a benchmark EVQA dataset - TrafficQA. Results show that our proposed approach achieves superior performance compared to previous state-of-the-art models.     Pencil drawn paper based supercapacitors

This is the first comprehensive analysis of paper-based supercapacitors, P-SCs, that are produced utilising commercially available pencils to draw an interdigitated design upon common household printing paper, developing cheap, green and reliable low profile electrical conductors and electrodes. The P-SCs are optimised in terms of the composition of pencil used, the number of layers and the analysis of single or double sided interdigitated electrode designs; such a comprehensive study is seldom explored in previous literature. A full analysis of the physical and electrochemical properties of the pencil drawn electrodes has been performed, including the application of a new capacitive testing/evaluation circuit applied to charge/discharge measurements/analysis, which provides a revolutionary and unambiguous analysis of the capacitance of the fabricated electrodes; an easy to use experiment guide is presented. The P-SCs are benchmarked using 0.1 M H 2 SO 4 as the aqueous electrolyte. The P-SCs demonstrate a specific capacitance of ∼10.6 μF mg -1 at a charge current of 0.46 A g -1 . The P-SCs are integrated into a novel pouch design, providing a flexible, cheap and easily manufactured supercapacitor, which demonstrates a capacitance of ∼101.4 μF, exhibiting a specific capacitance of ∼42.4 μF g -1 at a current density of 0.46 A g -1 , exhibiting energy and power densities of ∼0.45 J mg -1 (0.125 mW h mg -1 ) and ∼0.03 W mg -1 respectively. The pouch cell, fabricated from P-SCs, utilises five parallel double-sided pencil drawn electrodes, with paper separators, and retains 82.2% of its maximum capacitance, after 5121 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 0.09 A g -1 . Last, a solid state P-SC is developed utilising a PVA-H 2 SO 4 solid electrolyte, which demonstrates a specific capacitance of 141.8 μF g -1 , at a charging current of 4.33 μA g -1

    Is a video worth n × n Images? A highly efficient approach to transformer-based video question answering

    Conventional Transformer-based Video Question Answering (VideoQA) approaches generally encode frames independently through one or more image encoders followed by interaction between frames and question. However, such schema incur significant memory use and inevitably slow down the training and inference speed. In this work, we present a highly efficient approach for VideoQA based on existing vision-language pre-trained models where we concatenate video frames to a n × n matrix and then convert it to one image. By doing so, we reduce the use of the image encoder from n 2 to 1 while maintaining the temporal structure of the original video. Experimental results on MSRVTT and TrafficQA show that our proposed approach achieves state-of-theart performance with nearly 4× faster speed and only 30% memory use. We show that by integrating our approach into VideoQA systems we can achieve comparable, even superior, performance with a significant speed up for training and inference. We believe the proposed approach can facilitate VideoQA-related research by reducing the computational requirements for those who have limited access to budgets and resources.     Rapid, energy-efficient synthesis of the layered carbide, Al<sub>4</sub>C<sub>3</sub>

    The phase-pure binary aluminium carbide, Al4C3 can be synthesised in vacuo from the elements in 30 minutes via microwave heating in a multimode cavity reactor. The success of the reaction is dependent on the use of finely divided aluminium and graphite starting materials, both of which couple effectively to the microwave field. The yellow-brown powder product was characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis and Raman spectroscopy. Powders were composed of hexagonal single crystallites tens of microns in diameter (rhombohedral space group R[3 with combining macron]m; Z = 3; a = 3.33813(5) Å, c = 25.0021(4) Å) and were stable to 1000 °C in air, argon and nitrogen. Equivalent microwave reactions of the elements in air led to the formation of the oxycarbide phases Al2OC and Al4O4C
