Effect of Vinyl Flooring on the Modal Properties of a Steel Footbridge
Damping ratios associated with non structural elements play an important role in mitigating the pedestrian-induced vibrations of slender footbridges. In particular, this paper analyses the effect of vinyl flooring on the modal parameters of steel footbridges. Motivated by the unexpected high experimental damping ratios of the first vibration modes of a real footbridge, whose deck was covered by a vinyl flooring, this paper aims at assessing more accurately the experimental damping ratios generated by this non-structural element on steel footbridges. For this purpose, a laboratory footbridge was built and vinyl flooring was installed on it. Its numerical and experimental modal parameters without and with the vinyl flooring were determined. The operational modal analysis method was used to estimate experimentally the modal parameters of the structure. The damping ratios associated with the vinyl flooring were obtained via the substraction between the experimental damping ratios of the laboratory footbridge with and without the vinyl flooring. An average increase of the damping ratios of 2.069% was observed due to the vinyl flooring installed. According to this result, this type of pavement may be a useful tool to significantly increase the damping ratios of steel footbridges in order to reduce pedestrian-induced vibrationsMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2014-53947-RFondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional DPI2014-53947-
No
The different types of tourists establish the motivation and behaviour, or a
combination of both criteria, as changing segmentation factors. Nevertheless, these
variables are usually understood as a result of subjective processes and are applied
universally to all types of tourists, independently of the social contexts where they are
originated.
This research emphasizes that ethnicity is a fundamental variable to understand
the motivations which drive to travel and to the destination’s tourist practices. To prove
this hypothesis, two sectors of tourists who visit Andalusia are compared: those who
came from Japan and those who come from Germany
The Saca de las Yeguas is an activity of ethnological interest of remote origins,
which is contained within a set of tasks that the livestock farmers of today’s Doñana
National Park carry out in this territory to a wide extent. It consists of the transfer of
semi-wild horses from Doñana to the town of Almonte in Huelva, where they are
cleaned up and put on the market. Although the horse breeding in Doñana has ceased to
be a prominent productive sector, the saca de las yeguas gathers together wide-ranging
cultural values which are recognized by the local population and, increasingly, by
outsiders who come to watch the herds of mares on their way through El Rocío and
Almonte every 26th June. However, the gradual transformation of this livestock practice
into a tourist attraction presents a risk to its conservation, especially if its leading
players (los yegüerizos) end up losing control of it. Arguably, the saca de las yeguas
runs the risk of dying of success if no action is taken to slow down and channel this
dynamic. Faced with this, it becomes necessary to promote a local participative management strategy which reconciles the protection of ethnological heritage with a
model of tourism development of an endogenous nature
Effect of on-site Coulomb repulsion term U on the band-gap states of the reduced rutile (110) TiO2 surface
We present a study concerning the effect of the on site d-d Coulomb interaction energy U on the band-gap
states of nonstoichiometric rutile 110 TiO2 surface. As well known, the excess electrons resulting from the
formation of oxygen vacancies localize on the Ti 3d orbitals forming band-gap states. Local density approximation
LDA does not give a correct description of these band-gap states, either with or without gradient
corrections. The failure of LDA is often attributed to an inadequate treatment of electron correlation in systems
with localized orbitals and is commonly corrected with an empirical local Coulomb repulsion term, i.e., the
LDA+U method. This study provides a completely general strategy to estimate the U value in this kind of
systems, illustrated here for reduced 110 TiO2 surface, well characterized from experiments. From ab initio
embedded cluster configuration interaction calculations, combined with the effective Hamiltonian theory, a
value of U of 5.5±0.5 eV is obtained, in good agreement with those reported for this system from x-ray
photoemission spectroscopy experiments U=4.5±0.5 eV . It is observed that when the ab initio estimate of U
is injected into the periodic LDA+U calculations, a correct description of the gap states is obtained from the
periodic LDA+U calculations. Additionally, the results indicate that the position of these states on the band
gap strongly depends on the level at which lattice relaxation is taken into account, with significant differences
between the density of states curves at the LDA+U level obtained using the optimal generalized gradient
approximation or LDA+U geometries. These results suggest that this combined strategy could be a useful tool
for those systems where electron correlation plays a key role, and no experimental data are available for the
on-site Coulomb repulsio
The sustainable touristic development requires a dynamic and participative social model
where all social agents, not only at community level but also public and private, are
involving in an actively and articulated way. Tourism is a phenomenon that is present in
all spheres of social life, regarding material evidences as ideological aspects which must
be adapted to community organization in which acting to prevent socio-economic imbalances and promote the protection and enhancement the uses and symbolic values
of cultural heritage.
This theoretical framework draws on anthropological research carried out in 2011 in
Leymebamba, a semi-highland located south of the Amazon region has a rich cultural
heritage (archaeological, ecological and ethnological) and an emerging network of
institutional and business actors centered on tourism. In this study we verify that
sustainable tourism development demands the active participation and the
interdependence of social partners and the articulation of their joint initiatives on a
model based on a governance system capable of integrating different sectors and
interests in society
In this paper we propose that tourism development should not be seen outside the culture,
as this is the main mechanism for social and economic development of peoples.
According to the above, in this study a heritage inventory of Morón de la Frontera is
developed, taking into account the historical, artistic and ethnological values , and serving
their tangible and intangible dimensions. This inventory is the instrument for designing a
tourist route that tries to articulate the various assets of the locality. Entrenched local
legends constitute the theme of this itinerary that will transit the most significant heritage
landmarks of Morón de la Frontera
Performance and risk in the Brazilian banking industry
Andres J. Picazo-Tadeo aknowledges the financial support from the Generalitat Valenciana (project PROMETEO 2018/102).This paper assesses the technical performance of Brazilian banks while accounting for risk, which is considered as an undesirable outcome of banking. To this end, frontier techniques based on Data Envelopment Analysis and directional distance functions are applied to a sample of 124 banks and data for the six-year period 2014-19. Our main finding is that the Brazilian banking industry could notably increase its production of conventional outputs without additional input usage and while maintaining the same levels of risk. Besides, investment banks are found to be more efficient than commercial banks mainly because of their superior managerial performance.Generalitat Valenciana
