Supermassive Black Hole Binaries: The Search Continues
Gravitationally bound supermassive black hole binaries (SBHBs) are thought to
be a natural product of galactic mergers and growth of the large scale
structure in the universe. They however remain observationally elusive, thus
raising a question about characteristic observational signatures associated
with these systems. In this conference proceeding I discuss current theoretical
understanding and latest advances and prospects in observational searches for
SBHBs.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures. To appear in the Proceedings of 2014 Sant Cugat

TERT promoter mutations are highly recurrent in SHH subgroup medulloblastoma
Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations were recently shown to drive telomerase activity in various cancer types, including medulloblastoma. However, the clinical and biological implications of TERT mutations in medulloblastoma have not been described. Hence, we sought to describe these mutations and their impact in a subgroup-specific manner. We analyzed the TERT promoter by direct sequencing and genotyping in 466 medulloblastomas. The mutational distributions were determined according to subgroup affiliation, demographics, and clinical, prognostic, and molecular features. Integrated genomics approaches were used to identify specific somatic copy number alterations in TERT promoter-mutated and wild-type tumors. Overall, TERT promoter mutations were identified in 21 % of medulloblastomas. Strikingly, the highest frequencies of TERT mutations were observed in SHH (83 %; 55/66) and WNT (31 %; 4/13) medulloblastomas derived from adult patients. Group 3 and Group 4 harbored this alteration in <5 % of cases and showed no association wit
Strongly Hyperbolic Extensions of the ADM Hamiltonian
The ADM Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity with prescribed lapse
and shift is a weakly hyperbolic system of partial differential equations. In
general weakly hyperbolic systems are not mathematically well posed. For well
posedness, the theory should be reformulated so that the complete system,
evolution equations plus gauge conditions, is (at least) strongly hyperbolic.
Traditionally, reformulation has been carried out at the level of equations of
motion. This typically destroys the variational and Hamiltonian structures of
the theory. Here I show that one can extend the ADM formalism to (i)
incorporate the gauge conditions as dynamical equations and (ii) affect the
hyperbolicity of the complete system, all while maintaining a Hamiltonian
description. The extended ADM formulation is used to obtain a strongly
hyperbolic Hamiltonian description of Einstein's theory that is generally
covariant under spatial diffeomorphisms and time reparametrizations, and has
physical characteristics. The extended Hamiltonian formulation with 1+log
slicing and gamma--driver shift conditions is weakly hyperbolic.Comment: This version contains minor corrections and clarifications. The

High Energy Photon Generation in Colliding Laser Pulses
The acceleration of charged leptons to TeV energies is a problem of considerable importance. At these energies, electroweak spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism are expected to play a dominant role in the interaction physics. Alternatively, short wavelength photons can also be used to probe this energy range, as exemplified by the γ-γ collider project [1].</jats:p
Numerical relativity simulations in the era of the Einstein Telescope
Numerical-relativity (NR) simulations of compact binaries are expected to be an invaluable tool in gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy. The sensitivity of future detectors such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) will place much higher demands on NR simulations than first- and second-generation ground-based detectors. We discuss the issues facing compact-object simulations over the next decade, with an emphasis on estimating where the accuracy and parameter space coverage will be sufficient for ET and where significant work is needed. <br/
