    A bibliometric analysis of the presence of finances in high-impact tourism journals

    The purpose of this study is to observe the presence of financial research applied to tourism during the 1995–2012 period. The Scopus database has been used for tourism journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports and the Mendeley reference manager was used to manage the results. Two hundred and fifty-two articles were selected with basically financial content. The results reveal that in the majority of cases empirical research typology was used; the subject matter that aroused most interest was corporate finances and, within this, financial management, value creation, capital structure and investment decisions

    Performance Evaluation of Distributed Mobility Management Protocols: Limitations and Solutions for Future Mobile Networks

    Mobile Internet data traffic has experienced an exponential growth over the last few years due to the rise of demanding multimedia content and the increasing number of mobile devices. Seamless mobility support at the IP level is envisioned as a key architectural requirement in order to deal with the ever-increasing demand for data and to efficiently utilize a plethora of different wireless access networks. Current efforts from both industry and academia aim to evolve the mobility management protocols towards a more distributed operation to tackle shortcomings of fully centralized approaches. However, distributed solutions face several challenges that can result in lower performance which might affect real-time and multimedia applications. In this paper, we conduct an analytical and simulated evaluation of the main centralized and proposed Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) solutions. Our results show that, in some scenarios, when users move at high speed and/or when the mobile node is running long-lasting applications, the DMM approaches incur high signaling cost and long handover latency.This work was supported by the Government of Extremadura under Grant no.     Evaluation Activities in Pharmacognosy

    La implantación del EEES comporta un nuevo sistema educativo enfocado al aprendizaje basado en el trabajo del estudiante, el cual deja de ser un sujeto pasivo que adquiere y memoriza conocimientos para convertirse en un sujeto activo de su desarrollo competencial y ser capaz de gestionar sus conocimientos eficientemente, bajo la tutela del profesor. Esto implica modificar no sólo la docencia sino también la evaluación, que como parte esencial del proceso educativo, asegura cubrir necesidades de aprendizaje y actualizar contenidos, proporciona retroalimentación, reflexión y análisis de la propia práctica y permite corregir deficiencias y mejorar metodologías. En Farmacognosia, actualmente en segundo curso de la Licenciatura de Farmacia, se han introducido estrategias de evaluación coherentes con los resultados de aprendizaje descritos, a considerar cuando se inicie el desarrollo de sus competencias en tercer curso de Grado. Inicialmente, se ha realizado una prueba de conocimientos previos. Se han aplicado dos tipos de pruebas, unas que enfatizan en la adquisición y comprensión de conocimientos y otras que abarcan competencias disciplinarias y transversales. Entre las primeras se han incluido: tests en aula virtual, que permiten discriminar información y dar una retroalimentación rápida; pruebas de respuesta abierta para comprobar capacidad de expresión, organización de ideas y razonamiento; y resolución de problemas para ver capacidad de gestionar información. Entre las segundas, después de realizar prácticas de laboratorio, se plantea una prueba de ejecución para una droga problema y se elabora un informe que demuestre el desarrollo de la ejecución, búsqueda y selección de información, observación e interpretación de resultados, y posterior exposición oral para valorar capacidad de comunicación.The implantation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) requires an educational system rooted in a competency-based learning approach in which, under professorial supervision, the students become active agents in order to reach a sufficient level of competence, retain more knowledge, and manage and apply this knowledge more efficiently. It implies modifying not only our teaching practices, but also our methods of evaluation, which, as an essential part of the education process, guarantees the acquisition of an ample range of skills and keeps course material up to date while providing students and educators with feed-back, reflection and analysis of the whole process. This, in turn, facilitates the correction of deficiencies and improvement of methodologies. In Pharmacognosy, which is currently taught in the second year of the Pharmacy program and in which ca. 200 students are enrolled, various evaluation strategies coherent with the established learning objectives were introduced to two groups of students. We first administered a questionnaire to ascertain the range of knowledge the students already had in related subjects. Then, two types of test were given: one type emphasizing the acquisition and understanding of knowledge and the other type focussing on more generic, interdisciplinary competence. The former type included: on-line multiple choice questionnaires, which allow for discernment of information and quick feed-back; open answer tests to determine the students’ ability to reason, organize their thoughts and express their ideas; and the resolution of problems to see how the students handle information. The latter type of exercise was given to pairs of students who, upon completing the laboratory component of the class, were given a proposal for solving a problem relating to a crude drug. The students then had to draft a scientific paper-like document describing the experimental protocol along with their observations, analysis of the results, and how they searched for and selected information.     Staff training influence on non-invasive ventilation outcome for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure

    Background. Although non-invasive ventilation (NIV) efficacy in the treatment of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (AHRF) have been previously demonstrated, not all the studies reveal this fact in the same degree, with some variability in the results. This study aimed to analyse variables related to NIV outcome for AHRF. Methods. A group of consecutive patients requiring NIV due to AHRF were included in a prospective observational cohort study performed in conventional wards. Variables considered included those reported in the literature, as well as staff problems during the management of the ventilators. The study aimed to include all patients during one year, but after the initial results, it had to be suspended. Results. Fifteen patients were included in the study: 10 males, mean age 68 ± 12. APACHE-II score was 17.6 ± 6.5. pH and pCO2 before NIV were 7.22 ± 0.11 and 110 ± 72 mmHg respectively. pH, corticosteroids use, APACHE score, and EPAP were found to influence outcome. Besides, an inadequate use of NIV due to lack of personnel training was detected in all patients with NIV failure (RR 3.5; 95% CI: 1.08-11.2; p = 0.007). In the light of these results, the study had to be suspended and patients were transferred to the respiratory ward. Conclusions. NIV is a life-saving respiratory treatment influenced by several factors, of which staff training is a key one. Centres attending acute respiratory patients should have an area in which this requirement is fulfilled

    Optimal modelling of buildings through simultaneous automatic simplifications of point clouds obtained with a laser scanner

    [EN] In recent years, the laser scanner has become the most used tool for modelling buildings in pure documentation and structural studies. Laser scanning provides large numbers of points in a minimum amount of time with great precision. The point clouds generated and the subsequent mosaics (data fusion of different clouds) contain millions of points with a heterogeneous density that define the 3D geometry of the buildings. Often, the number of points results in excessive information without offering a better definition. As a result, it is necessary to analyse which points can be eliminated and which ones cannot, based on precision criteria, to obtain a precise geometry with the smallest possible number of points for each part of the building. The algorithm developed in this work reduces the point clouds (in mosaics made up of clouds with over 10 million points) with precision criteria by as much as 99% while still accurately resolving the geometry of the object. The developed process is automatic such that different models with different resolutions can be obtained simultaneously. As a result, we obtain single clouds with homogenous distributions and densities throughout the model of the building (based on multiple overlapping clouds), with a computational cost of only a few seconds per cloud.     Effectiveness and safety of sofosbuvir‐based regimens plus an NS5A inhibitor for patients with HCV genotype 3 infection and cirrhosis: results of a multicenter real‐life cohort

    [Abstract] Patients with HCV genotype 3 (GT3) infection and cirrhosis are currently the most difficult to cure. We report our experience with sofosbuvir+daclatasvir (SOF+DCV) or sofosbuvir/ledipasvir (SOF/LDV), with or without ribavirin (RBV) in clinical practice in this population. This was a multicenter observational study including cirrhotic patients infected by HCV GT3, treated with sofosbuvir plus an NS5A inhibitor (May 2014‐October 2015). In total, 208 patients were included: 98 (47%) treatment‐experienced, 42 (20%) decompensated and 55 (27%) MELD score >10. In 131 (63%), treatment was SOF+DCV and in 77 (37%), SOF/LDV. Overall, 86% received RBV. RBV addition and extension to 24 weeks was higher in the SOF/LDV group (95% vs 80%, P=.002 and 83% vs 72%, P=.044, respectively). A higher percentage of decompensated patients were treated with DCV than LDV (25% vs 12%, P=.013). Overall, SVR12 was 93.8% (195/208): 94% with SOF+DCV and 93.5% with SOF/LDV. SVR12 was achieved in 90.5% of decompensated patients. Eleven treatment failures: 10 relapses and one breakthrough. RBV addition did not improve SVR (RR: 1.08; P=.919). The single factor associated with failure to achieve SVR was platelet count <75×10E9/mL (RR: 3.50, P=.019). In patients with MELD <10, type of NS5A inhibitor did not impact on SVR12 (94% vs 97%; adjusted RR: 0.49). Thirteen patients (6.3%) had serious adverse events, including three deaths (1.4%) and one therapy discontinuation (0.5%), higher in decompensated patients (16.7% vs 3.6%, P<.006). In patients with GT3 infection and cirrhosis, SVR12 rates were high with both SOF+DCV and SOF/LDV, with few serious adverse events

    A precision medicine test predicts clinical response after idarubicin and cytarabine induction therapy in AML patients

    Complete remission (CR) after induction therapy is the first treatment goal in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients and has prognostic impact. Our purpose is to determine the correlation between the observed CR/CRi rate after idarubicin (IDA) and cytarabine (CYT) 3 + 7 induction and the leukemic chemosensitivity measured by an ex vivo test of drug activity. Bone marrow samples from adult patients with newly diagnosed AML were included in this study. Whole bone marrow samples were incubated for 48 h in well plates containing IDA, CYT, or their combination. Pharmacological response parameters were estimated using population pharmacodynamic models. Patients attaining a CR/CRi with up to two induction cycles of 3 + 7 were classified as responders and the remaining as resistant. A total of 123 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were evaluable for correlation analyses. The strongest clinical predictors were the area under the curve of the concentration response curves of CYT and IDA. The overall accuracy achieved using MaxSpSe criteria to define positivity was 81%, predicting better responder (93%) than non-responder patients (60%). The ex vivo test provides better yet similar information than cytogenetics, but can be provided before treatment representing a valuable in-time addition. After validation in an external cohort, this novel ex vivo test could be useful to select AML patients for 3 + 7 regimen vs. alternative schedules

    Ecología trófica del delfín listado en aguas del Mar de Alborán y el Golfo de Cádiz

    Existe muy poca información sobre la dieta del delfín listado (Stenella coeruleoalba) en aguas del sur de España. En este estudio se analizaron los estómagos de 61 delfines varados en Andalucía en los últimos ocho años (2007-2014). Diez estómagos estaban vacios y de los 51 individuos restantes, 35 vararon en la costa del Mar de Alborán y 11 en el Golfo de Cádiz. Para las 5 muestras restantes no se dispone de localidad concreta. Los restos de las presas en los estómagos consistieron sobre todo en estructuras duras: otolitos, cristalinos y unos pocos huesos de peces, así como mandíbulas y cristalinos de cefalópodos. No aparecieron otro tipo de restos lo que parece indicar que los individuos no se habían alimentado recientemente. Para caracterizar la dieta se calcularon tres índices (calculados para cada categoría de presa): frecuencia de aparición en los estómagos, número de individuos y peso reconstruido y sus porcentajes respectivos. El delfín listado parece ser una especie predominantemente piscívora (se identificaron restos de 5682 peces frente a solamente 210 cefalópodos) que se alimenta de especies mesopelágicas principalmente. La familia más importante tanto en número como en frecuencia de aparición fue Myctophidae, principalmente Ceratoscopelus maderensis y Myctophum punctatum a las que pertenecieron casi la mitad de los peces identificados (36,4%N, 35,3%F y 12,3%N, 25,5%F, respectivamente). También se identificó Maurolicus muelleri (Sternoptychidae 13,4%N y 17,6%F). Otras familias identificadas presentan una distribución más costera: Sparidae (Boops boops) y Carangidae (Trachurus sp.) (4,5%N, 9,8%F y 1,2%N, 3,9%F, respectivamente). Los cefalópodos identificados pertenecieron a 11 familias siendo la más abundante Ommastrephidae (26,7%N y 39,2%F). Otras familias incluyen representantes oceánicos, Brachioteuthidae (16,7%N y 21,5%F); Chiroteuthidae (6,7%N y 9,8%F); Enoploteuthidae (4,8%N y 3,9%F), Ancistrocheridae (0.5%N y 2%F) y otros de distribución más costera, Sepiolidae (19%N y 19,6%F), Sepiidae (5,7%N y 3,9%F) y Loliginidae (3,8%N y 5,9%F)
