H-dibaryons and Primordial Nucleosynthesis
The apparent discrepancy between abundances of light nuclides predicted by
the standard Big-Bang and observational data is explained, by assuming the
presence of metastable H dibaryons at the nucleosynthesis era. These dibaryons
could be formed out of a small fraction of strange quarks at the moment of the
confinement transition. For a primordial deuterium abundance of the order of 3
10^{-5}, the measured differences in the 4He abundances requires a relative
abundance of H dibaryons of the order of n_H/n_B = 0.07, decaying in a
timescale of the order of 10^5 s.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, to appear in PR
Nuclear and nucleon transitions of the H di-baryon
We consider 3 types of processes pertinent to the phenomenology of an H
di-baryon: conversion of two 's in a doubly-strange hypernucleus to an
H, decay of the H to two baryons, and -- if the H is light enough -- conversion
of two nucleons in a nucleus to an H. We compute the spatial wavefunction
overlap using the Isgur-Karl and Bethe-Goldstone wavefunctions, and treat the
weak interactions phenomenologically. The observation of decays from
doubly-strange hypernuclei puts a constraint on the H wavefunction which is
plausibly satisfied. In this case the H is very long-lived as we calculate. An
absolutely stable H is not excluded at present. SuperK can provide valuable
limits
Analytic structure of rho meson propagator at finite temperature
We analyse the structure of one-loop self-energy graphs for the rho meson in
real time formulation of finite temperature field theory. We find the
discontinuities of these graphs across the unitary and the Landau cuts. These
contributions are identified with different sources of medium modification
discussed in the literature. We also calculate numerically the imaginary and
the real parts of the self-energies and construct the spectral function of the
rho meson, which are compared with an earlier determination. A significant
contribution arises from the unitary cut of the pi-omega loop, that was ignored
so far in the literature
Determination of alphaS from Hadronic Event Shapes in e+e- Annihilation at 192 < sqrt(s) < 208 GeV
Results are presented from a study of the structure of high energy hadronic
events recorded by the L3 detector at sqrt(s)>192 GeV. The distributions of
several event shape variables are compared to resummed O(alphaS^2) QCD
calculations. We determine the strong coupling constant at three average
centre-of-mass energies: 194.4, 200.2 and 206.2 GeV. These measurements,
combined with previous L3 measurements at lower energies, demonstrate the
running of alphaS as expected in QCD and yield alphaS(mZ) = 0.1227 +- 0.0012 +-
0.0058, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is
theoretical
Supersymmetry beyond minimal flavour violation
We review the sources and phenomenology of non-minimal flavour violation in
the MSSM. We discuss in some detail the most important theoretical and
experimental constraints, as well as promising observables to look for
supersymmetric effects at the LHC and in the future. We emphasize the
sensitivity of flavour physics to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking and
to new degrees of freedom present at fundamental scales, such as the grand
unification scale. We include a discussion of present data that may hint at

Studies of Hadronic Event Structure in e+e- Annihilation from 30 GeV to 209 GeV with the L3 Detector
In this Report, QCD results obtained from a study of hadronic event structure
in high energy e^+e^- interactions with the L3 detector are presented. The
operation of the LEP collider at many different collision energies from 91 GeV
to 209 GeV offers a unique opportunity to test QCD by measuring the energy
dependence of different observables. The main results concern the measurement
of the strong coupling constant, \alpha_s, from hadronic event shapes and the
study of effects of soft gluon coherence through charged particle multiplicity
and momentum distributions.Comment: To appear in Physics Report
Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries
Background
Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.
Methods
This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries.
Results
In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.
Conclusion
This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries
