    Thurston's pullback map on the augmented Teichm\"uller space and applications

    Let ff be a postcritically finite branched self-cover of a 2-dimensional topological sphere. Such a map induces an analytic self-map σf\sigma_f of a finite-dimensional Teichm\"uller space. We prove that this map extends continuously to the augmented Teichm\"uller space and give an explicit construction for this extension. This allows us to characterize the dynamics of Thurston's pullback map near invariant strata of the boundary of the augmented Teichm\"uller space. The resulting classification of invariant boundary strata is used to prove a conjecture by Pilgrim and to infer further properties of Thurston's pullback map. Our approach also yields new proofs of Thurston's theorem and Pilgrim's Canonical Obstruction theorem.Comment: revised version, 28 page

    Finite-temperature properties of the Hubbard chain with bond-charge interaction

    We investigate the one-dimensional Hubbard model with an additional bond-charge interaction, recently considered in the description of compounds that exhibit strong 1D features above the temperature of ordered phases. The partition function of the model is exactly calculated for a value of the bond-charge coupling; the behavior of the specific heat and spin susceptibility as a function of temperature is derived at arbitrary filling, and particularly discussed across the occurring metal-insulator transition.     The impact of electrode resistance on the biogalvanic characterisation technique

    Measurement of a tissue-specific electrical resistance may offer a discriminatory metric for evaluation of tissue health during cancer surgery. With a move toward minimally-invasive procedures, applicable contact sensing modalities must be scalable, fast and robust. A passive resistance characterisation method utilising a biogalvanic cell as an intrinsic power source has been proposed as a potentially suitable solution. Previous work has evaluated this system with results showing effective discrimination of tissue type and damage (through electroporation). However, aspects of the biogalvanic cell have been found to influence the characterisation performance, and are not currently accounted for within the system model. In particular, the electrode and salt-bridge resistance are not independently determined, leading to over-predictions of tissue resistivity.This paper describes a more comprehensive model and characterisation scheme, with electrode parameters and salt-bridge resistivity being evaluated independently. In a generalised form, the presented model illustrates how the relative resistive contributions from the electrodes and medium relate to the existing characterisation method efficacy. We also describe experiments with physiologically relevant salt solutions (1.71, 17.1, 154 mM), used for validation and comparison. The presented model shows improved performance over the current biogalvanic measurement technique at the median conductivity. Both the proposed and extant system models become unable to predict conductivity accurately at high conductivity due to the dominance of the electrodes. The characterisation techniques have also been applied to data collected on freshly excised human colon tissue (healthy and cancerous). The findings suggest that the resistance of the cell under the test conditions is electrode dominated, leading to erroneous tissue resistance determination. Measurement optimisation strategies and the surgical applicability of the biogalvanic technique are discussed in light of these findings

    Influence of a Uniform Current on Collective Magnetization Dynamics in a Ferromagnetic Metal

    We discuss the influence of a uniform current, j⃗\vec{j} , on the magnetization dynamics of a ferromagnetic metal. We find that the magnon energy ϵ(q⃗)\epsilon(\vec{q}) has a current-induced contribution proportional to q⃗⋅J⃗\vec{q}\cdot \vec{\cal J}, where J⃗\vec{\cal J} is the spin-current, and predict that collective dynamics will be more strongly damped at finite j⃗{\vec j}. We obtain similar results for models with and without local moment participation in the magnetic order. For transition metal ferromagnets, we estimate that the uniform magnetic state will be destabilized for j≳109Acm−2j \gtrsim 10^{9} {\rm A} {\rm cm}^{-2}. We discuss the relationship of this effect to the spin-torque effects that alter magnetization dynamics in inhomogeneous magnetic systems.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    A local families index formula for d-bar operators on punctured Riemann surfaces

    Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.Comment: 47 page

    The effect of steps to promote higher levels of farm animal welfare across the EU. Societal versus animal scientists’ perceptions of animal welfare

    Information about animal welfare standards and initiatives from eight European countries was collected, grouped, and compared to EU welfare standards to detect those aspects beyond minimum welfare levels demanded by EU welfare legislation. Literature was reviewed to determine the scientific relevance of standards and initiatives, and those aspects going beyond minimum EU standards. Standards and initiatives were assessed to determine their strengths and weaknesses regarding animal welfare. Attitudes of stakeholders in the improvement of animal welfare were determined through a Policy Delphi exercise. Social perception of animal welfare, economic implications of upraising welfare levels, and differences between countries were considered. Literature review revealed that on-farm space allowance, climate control, and environmental enrichment are relevant for all animal categories. Experts’ assessment revealed that on-farm prevention of thermal stress, air quality, and races and passageways’ design were not sufficiently included. Stakeholders considered that housing conditions are particularly relevant regarding animal welfare, and that animal-based and farm-level indicators are fundamental to monitor the progress of animal welfare. The most notable differences between what society offers and what farm animals are likely to need are related to transportation and space availability, with economic constraints being the most plausible explanation

    Evaluating the usability of a visual feature modeling notation

    International audienceFeature modeling is a popular Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) technique used to describe variability in a product family. A usable feature modeling tool environment should enable SPLE practitioners to produce good quality models, in particular, models that effectively communicate modeled information. FAMILIAR is a text-based environment for manipulating and composing Feature Models (FMs). In this paper we present extensions we made to FAMILIAR to enhance its usability. The extensions include a visualization of FMs, or more precisely , a feature diagram rendering mechanism that supports the use of a combination of text and graphics to describe FMs, their configurations, and the results of FM analyses. We also present the results of a preliminary evaluation of the environment's usability. The evaluation involves comparing the use of the extended environment with the previous text-based console-driven version. The preliminary experiment provides some evidence that use of the new environment results in increased cognitive effectiveness of novice users and improved quality of new FMs
