How Coupling Determines the Entrainment of Circadian Clocks

Autonomous circadian clocks drive daily rhythms in physiology and behaviour. A network of coupled neurons, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), serves as a robust self-sustained circadian pacemaker. Synchronization of this timer to the environmental light-dark cycle is crucial for an organism's fitness. In a recent theoretical and experimental study it was shown that coupling governs the entrainment range of circadian clocks. We apply the theory of coupled oscillators to analyse how diffusive and mean-field coupling affects the entrainment range of interacting cells. Mean-field coupling leads to amplitude expansion of weak oscillators and, as a result, reduces the entrainment range. We also show that coupling determines the rigidity of the synchronized SCN network, i.e. the relaxation rates upon perturbation. %(Floquet exponents). Our simulations and analytical calculations using generic oscillator models help to elucidate how coupling determines the entrainment of the SCN. Our theoretical framework helps to interpret experimental data

Measurement of angular parameters from the decay B⁰  → K⁎0^{⁎0} ÎŒâș Ό⁻ in proton–proton collisions at √s 8 TeV

    Get PDF
Angular distributions of the decay B⁰  → K⁎0^{⁎0} ÎŒâș Ό⁻ are studied using a sample of proton–proton collisions at √s=8TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.5fb⁻Âč . An angular analysis is performed to determine the P₁ and P2˘7^{\u27}₅ parameters, where the P2˘7^{\u27}₅ parameter is of particular interest because of recent measurements that indicate a potential discrepancy with the standard model predictions. Based on a sample of 1397 signal events, the P₁ and P2˘7^{\u27}₅ parameters are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass squared. The measurements are in agreement with predictions based on the standard model

Search for gauge-mediated supersymmetry in events with at least one photon and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    Get PDF
A search for gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) in final states with photons and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The data sample of pp collisions at s=13TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. Data are compared with models in which the lightest neutralino has bino- or wino-like components, resulting in decays to photons and gravitinos, where the gravitinos escape detection. The event selection is optimized for both electroweak (EWK) and strong production SUSY scenarios. The observed data are consistent with standard model predictions, and limits are set in the context of a general gauge mediation model in which gaugino masses up to 980 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Gaugino masses below 780 and 950 GeV are excluded in two simplified models with EWK production of mass-degenerate charginos and neutralinos. Stringent limits are set on simplified models based on gluino and squark pair production, excluding gluino (squark) masses up to 2100 (1750) GeV depending on the assumptions made for the decay modes and intermediate particle masses. This analysis sets the highest mass limits to date in the studied EWK models, and in the considered strong production models when the mass difference between the gauginos and the squarks or gluinos is small

Search for excited quarks of light and heavy flavor in γ  + jet final states in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

A search is presented for excited quarks of light and heavy flavor that decay to Îł+jet final states. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb⁻Âč collected by the CMS experiment in proton–proton collisions at √s=13TeV at the LHC. A signal would appear as a resonant contribution to the invariant mass spectrum of the Îł+jet system, above the background expected from standard model processes. No resonant excess is found, and upper limits are set on the product of the excited quark cross section and its branching fraction as a function of its mass. These are the most stringent limits to date in the Îł+jet final state, and exclude excited light quarks with masses below 5.5 TeV and excited b quarks with masses below 1.8 TeV, assuming standard model like coupling strengths

Deterministic mathematical modelling for cancer chronotherapeutics: cell population dynamics and treatment optimisation

    Get PDF
Chronotherapeutics has been designed and used for more than twenty years as an effective treatment against cancer by a few teams around the world, among whom one of the first is Francis LĂ©vi's at Paul-Brousse hospital (Villejuif, France), in application of circadian clock physiology to determine best infusion times within the 24-hour span for anticancer drug delivery. Mathematical models have been called in the last ten years to give a rational basis to such optimised treatments, for use in the laboratory and ultimately in the clinic. While actual clinical applications of the theoretical optimisation principles found have remained elusive so far to improve chronotherapeutic treatments in use, mathematical models provide proofs of concepts and tracks to be explored experimentally, to progress from theory to bedside. Starting from a simple ordinary differential equation model that allowed setting and numerically solving a drug delivery optimisation problem with toxicity constraints, this modelling enterprise has been extended to represent the division cycle in proliferating cell populations with different molecular targets, to allow for the representation of anticancer drug combinations that are used in clinical oncology. The main point to be made precise in such a therapeutic optimisation problem is to establish, here in the frame of circadian chronobiology, physiologically based differences between healthy and cancer cell populations in their responses to drugs. To this aim, clear biological evidence at the molecular level is still lacking, so that, starting from indirect observations at the experimental and clinical levels and from theoretical considerations on the model, speculations have been made, that will be exposed in this review of cancer chronotherapeutics models with the corresponding optimisation problems and their numerical solutions, to represent these differences between the two cell populations, with regard to circadian clock control

Search for pair production of excited top quarks in the lepton + jets final state

    Get PDF
A search is performed for the pair production of spin-3/2 excited top quarks, each decaying to a top quark and a gluon. The search uses the data collected with the CMS detector from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb−1 . Events are selected by requiring an isolated muon or electron, an imbalance in the transverse momentum, and at least six jets of which exactly two must be compatible with originating from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. No significant excess over the standard model predictions is found. A lower limit of 1.2 TeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of the spin-3/2 excited top quark in an extension of the Randall–Sundrum model, assuming a 100% branching fraction of its decay into a top quark and a gluon. These are the best limits to date in a search for excited top quarks and the first at 13 TeV
