Measuring an entropy in heavy ion collisions

    Get PDF
We propose to use the coincidence method of Ma to measure an entropy of the system created in heavy ion collisions. Moreover we estimate, in a simple model, the values of parameters for which the thermodynamical behaviour sets in.Comment: LATTICE98(hightemp), 3 pages, LaTeX with two eps figure

The Goddard VLBI group reports the results of analyzing 361 Mark III VLBI data sets from fixed observatories through the end of 1985 which are available to the Crustal Dynamics Project. All POLARIS/IRIS full-day data sets are included. The mobile VLBI sites at Platteville, Colorado; Penticton, British Columbia; and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories are also included since these occupations bear on the study of plate stability. Two large solutions, GLB027 and GLB028, were used to obtain site/baseline evolutions and earth rotation parameters, respectively. Source positions and nutation offsets were also adjusted in each solution. The results include 23 sites and 101 baselines

The Goddard VLBI group reports the results of analyzing the fixed observatory VLBI data available to the Crustal Dynamics Project through the end of 1984. All POLARIS/IRIS full-day data are included. The mobile site at Platteville, Colorado is also included since its occupation bears on the study of plate stability. Data from 1980 through 1984 were used to obtain the catalog of site and radio source positions labeled S284C. Using this catalog two types of one-day solutions were made: (1) to estimate site and baseline motions; and (2) to estimate Earth rotation parameters. A priori Earth rotation parameters were interpolated to the epoch of each observation from BIH Circular D

Radio source positions were estimated globally while nutation offsets were estimated from each data set. The results include 25 sites and 108 baselines

Solid-state interdiffusion reactions in Ni/Ti and Ni/Zr multilayered thin films

    Get PDF
We have performed a comparative transmission electron microscopy study of solid-state interdiffusion reactions in multilayered Ni/Zr and Ni/Ti thin films. The Ni-Zr reaction product was amorphous while the Ni-Ti reaction product was a simple intermetallic compound. Because thermodynamic and chemical properties of these two alloy systems are similar, we suggest kinetic origins for this difference in reaction product

Time-Dependent Symmetries of Variable-Coefficient Evolution Equations and Graded Lie Algebras

Polynomial-in-time dependent symmetries are analysed for polynomial-in-time dependent evolution equations. Graded Lie algebras, especially Virasoro algebras, are used to construct nonlinear variable-coefficient evolution equations, both in 1+1 dimensions and in 2+1 dimensions, which possess higher-degree polynomial-in-time dependent symmetries. The theory also provides a kind of new realisation of graded Lie algebras. Some illustrative examples are given.Comment: 11 pages, latex, to appear in J. Phys. A: Math. Ge

Stochastic stability of viscoelastic systems under Gaussian and Poisson white noise excitations

    Get PDF
As the use of viscoelastic materials becomes increasingly popular, stability of viscoelastic structures under random loads becomes increasingly important. This paper aims at studying the asymptotic stability of viscoelastic systems under Gaussian and Poisson white noise excitations with Lyapunov functions. The viscoelastic force is approximated as equivalent stiffness and damping terms. A stochastic differential equation is set up to represent randomly excited viscoelastic systems, from which a Lyapunov function is determined by intuition. The time derivative of this Lyapunov function is then obtained by stochastic averaging. Approximate conditions are derived for asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of the viscoelastic system. Validity and utility of this approach are illustrated by a Duffing-type oscillator possessing viscoelastic forces, and the influence of different parameters on the stability region is delineated
