The MeqTrees software system and its use for third-generation calibration of radio interferometers
The formulation of the radio interferometer measurement equation (RIME) by
Hamaker et al. has provided us with an elegant mathematical apparatus for
better understanding, simulation and calibration of existing and future
instruments. The calibration of the new radio telescopes (LOFAR, SKA) would be
unthinkable without the RIME formalism, and new software to exploit it.
MeqTrees is designed to implement numerical models such as the RIME, and to
solve for arbitrary subsets of their parameters. The technical goal of MeqTrees
is to provide a tool for rapid implementation of such models, while offering
performance comparable to hand-written code. We are also pursuing the wider
goal of increasing the rate of evolution of radio astronomical software, by
offering a tool for rapid experimentation and exchange of ideas.
MeqTrees is implemented as a Python-based front-end called the meqbrowser,
and an efficient (C++-based) computational back-end called the meqserver.
Numerical models are defined on the front-end via a Python-based Tree
Definition Language (TDL), then rapidly executed on the back-end. The use of
TDL facilitates an extremely short turn-around time for experimentation with
new ideas. This is also helped by unprecedented visualization capabilities for
all final and intermediate results. A flexible data model and a number of
important optimizations in the back-end ensures that the numerical performance
is comparable to that of hand-written code.
MeqTrees is already widely used as the simulation tool for new instruments
(LOFAR, SKA) and technologies (focal plane arrays). It has demonstrated that it
can achieve a noise-limited dynamic range in excess of a million, on WSRT data.
It is the only package that is specifically designed to handle what we propose
to call third-generation calibration (3GC), which is needed for the new
generation of giant radio telescopes.Comment: 15 pages; 14 figure
Subtraction of Bright Point Sources from Synthesis Images of the Epoch of Reionization
Bright point sources associated with extragalactic AGN and radio galaxies are
an important foreground for low frequency radio experiments aimed at detecting
the redshifted 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen during the epoch of
reionization. The frequency dependence of the synthesized beam implies that the
sidelobes of these sources will move across the field of view as a function of
observing frequency, hence frustrating line-of-sight foreground subtraction
techniques. We describe a method for subtracting these point sources from dirty
maps produced by an instrument such as the MWA. This technique combines matched
filters with an iterative centroiding scheme to locate and characterize point
sources in the presence of a diffuse background. Simulations show that this
technique can improve the dynamic range of EOR maps by 2-3 orders of magnitude.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, submitted to PAS
Antioxidant Supplementation in Oxidative Stress-Related Diseases: What Have We Learned from Studies on Alpha-Tocopherol?
Oxidative stress has been proposed as a key contributor to lifestyle- and age-related diseases. Because free radicals play an important role in various processes such as immune responses and cellular signaling, the body possesses an arsenal of different enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanisms. Oxidative stress is, among others, the result of an imbalance between the production of various reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defense mechanisms including vitamin E (α-tocopherol) as a non-enzymatic antioxidant. Dietary vitamins, such as vitamin C and E, can also be taken in as supplements. It has been postulated that increasing antioxidant levels through supplementation may delay and/or ameliorate outcomes of lifestyle- and age-related diseases that have been linked to oxidative stress. Although supported by many animal experiments and observational studies, randomized clinical trials in humans have failed to demonstrate any clinical benefit from antioxidant supplementation. Nevertheless, possible explanations for this discrepancy remain underreported. This review aims to provide an overview of recent developments and novel research techniques used to clarify the existing controversy on the benefits of antioxidant supplementation in health and disease, focusing on α-tocopherol as antioxidant. Based on the currently available literature, we propose that examining the difference between antioxidant activity and capacity, by considering the catabolism of antioxidants, will provide crucial knowledge on the preventative and therapeutical use of antioxidant supplementation in oxidative stress-related diseases
Numerical study of two-body correlation in a 1D lattice with perfect blockade
We compute the dynamics of excitation and two-body correlation for two-level
"pseudoatoms" in a 1D lattice. We adopt a simplified model where pair
excitation within a finite range is perfectly blocked. Each superatom is
initially in the ground state, and then subjected to an external driving laser
with Rabi frequency satisfying a Poissonian distribution, mimicking the
scenario as in Rydberg gases. We find that two-body quantum correlation drops
very fast with the distance between pseudoatoms. However, the total correlation
decays slowly even at large distance. Our results may be useful to the
understanding of Rydberg gases in the strong blockade regime

The highest frequency detection of a radio relic : 16 GHz AMI observations of the 'Sausage' cluster

All rights reserved.We observed the cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager at 16 GHz and present the first high radio-frequency detection of diffuse, non-thermal cluster emission. This cluster hosts a variety of bright, extended, steep-spectrum synchrotron-emitting radio sources, associated with the intracluster medium, called radio relics. Most notably, the northern, Mpc-wide, narrow relic provides strong evidence for diffusive shock acceleration in clusters. We detect a puzzling, flat-spectrum, diffuse extension of the southern relic, which is not visible in the lower radio-frequency maps. The northern radio relic is unequivocally detected and measures an integrated flux of 1.2 ± 0.3 mJy. While the low-frequency (<2 GHz) spectrum of the northern relic is well represented by a power law, it clearly steepens towards 16 GHz. This result is inconsistent with diffusive shock acceleration predictions of ageing plasma behind a uniform shock front. The steepening could be caused by an inhomogeneous medium with temperature/density gradients or by lower acceleration efficiencies of high energy electrons. Further modelling is necessary to explain the observed spectrum.Peer reviewe
Ventricular repolarization is associated with cognitive function, but not with cognitive decline and brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) measurements in older adults
We aimed to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of electrocardiogram (ECG)-based QT, QTc, JT, JTc, and QRS intervals with cognitive function and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in a cohort of older individuals at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, but free of known arrhythmias. We studied 4627 participants (54% female, mean age 75 years) enrolled in the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). Ten-second ECGs were conducted at baseline. Cognitive function was tested at baseline and repeated during a mean follow-up time of 3.2 years. Structural MRIs were conducted in a subgroup of 535 participants. Analyses were performed with multivariable (repeated) linear regression models and adjusted for cardiovascular risk-factors, co-morbidities, and cardiovascular drug use. At baseline, longer QT, JT, JTc—but not QTc and QRS intervals—were associated with a worse cognitive performance. Most notably, on the Stroop Test, participants performed 3.02 (95% CI 0.31; 5.73) seconds worse per standard deviation higher QT interval, independent of cardiovascular risk factors and medication use. There was no association between longer ventricular de- or repolarization and structural brain measurements. Therefore, specifically ventricular repolarization was associated with worse cognitive performance in older individuals at baseline but not during follow-up
