Liquidity effects of the events of September 11, 2001

Banks rely heavily on incoming payments from other banks to fund their own payments. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, destroyed facilities in Lower Manhattan, leaving some banks unable to send payments through the Federal Reserve's Fedwire payments system. As a result, many banks received fewer payments than expected, causing unexpected shortfalls in banks' liquidity. These disruptions also made it harder for banks to redistribute balances across the banking system in a timely manner. In this article, the authors measure the payments responses of banks to the receipt of payments from other banks, both under normal circumstances and during the days following the attacks. Their analysis suggests that the significant injections of liquidity by the Federal Reserve, first through the discount window and later through open market operations, were important in allowing banks to reestablish their normal patterns of payments coordination.Fedwire ; Electronic funds transfers ; War - Economic aspects ; Bank liquidity ; Payment systems

UnlabelledPremise of the studyWe developed microsatellite primers for the tropical tree Chrysophyllum cainito (Sapotaceae) to determine the native range of the species, investigate the origin of cultivated populations, and examine the partitioning of genetic diversity in wild and cultivated populations. •Methods and resultsWe developed 10 polymorphic primers from C. cainito genomic DNA libraries enriched for di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide repeat motifs. The loci amplified were polymorphic in samples collected from Jamaica and Panama. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 10 and three to 12, while observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.074 to 0.704 and 0.407 to 0.852 in Jamaica and Panama, respectively. •ConclusionsThe microsatellite primers will be useful in future population genetic studies as well as those aimed at understanding the geographic origin(s) of wild and cultivated populations

We apply our methods to the commonly used sunspot data set and find strong evidence in favor of the Endogenous Delay Threshold Autoregressive (EDTAR) model over linear and traditional threshold autoregressions

Pedagogies of production: Re-imagining literacies for the digital age

This chapter reflects on the relationships between film, digital media, and new literacy and learning practices and explores the ways in which the study and production of audiovisual texts can be integrated into school settings. The chapter also considers the attendant new pedagogies to which film and media-making give rise, including the development of fluid and less hierarchical teaching practices that speak better to the everyday digital lives of children and young people in relation to the sociopolitical barriers to progressive education. Arguing in favor of more collaborative, social, and dynamic literacies inclusive of the moving image, the authors support the view that film is one of the foremost art forms of the last and the current century

Political and Media Discourses about Integrating Refugees in the UK

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.This article addresses political and media discourses about integrating refugees in the UK in the context of the “refugee crisis”. A discursive psychological approach is presented as the best way to understand what talk about the concept is used to accomplish in these debates. A large corpus of political discussions (13 hours of debate featuring 146 politicians) and 960 newspaper articles from the UK were discourse analysed. The analysis identified five dilemmas about integration: Integration is positive and necessary, but challenging; Host communities are presented as welcoming, but there are limits to their capacity; Refugees are responsible for integration, but host communities need to provide support; Good refugees integrate, bad ones don't; Refugees are vulnerable and are skilled. All are used to warrant the inclusion or exclusion of refugees. The responsibility of western nations to support refugees is therefore contingent on the refugees behaving in specific ways
