Thermal conductivity of Mg-doped CuGeO_3 at very low temperatures: Heat conduction by antiferromagnetic magnons
Thermal conductivity \kappa is measured at very low temperatures down to 0.28
K for pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 single crystals. The doped samples carry larger
amount of heat than the pure sample at the lowest temperature. This is because
antiferromagnetic magnons appear in the doped samples and are responsible for
the additional heat conductivity, while \kappa of the pure sample represents
phonon conductivity at such low temperatures. The maximum energy of the magnon
is estimated to be much lower than the spin-Peierls-gap energy. The result
presents the first example that \kappa at very low temperatures probes the
magnon transport in disorder-induced antiferromagnetic phase of spin-gap
systems
Low-temperature electronic heat transport in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals: Unusual low-energy physics in the normal and superconducting states
The thermal conductivity \kappa is measured in a series of
La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0 - 0.22) single crystals down to 90 mK to elucidate
the evolution of the residual electronic thermal conductivity \kappa_{res},
which probes the extended quasiparticle states in the d-wave gap. We found that
\kappa_{res}/T grows smoothly, except for a 1/8 anomaly, above x = 0.05 and
shows no discontinuity at optimum doping, indicating that the behavior of
\kappa_{res}/T is not governed by the metal-insulator crossover in the normal
state; as a result, \kappa_{res}/T is much larger than what the normal-state
resistivity would suggest in the underdoped region, which highlights the

Absence of residual quasiparticle conductivity in the underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu4O8
We report here measurements of the in-plane thermal conductivity K(T) of the
underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124) below 1K. K(T) is shown to follow a simple,
phononic T^3 dependence at the lowest temperatures for both current directions,
with a negligible linear, quasiparticle contribution. This observation is in
marked contrast with behavior reported in optimally doped cuprates, and implies
that extended zero-energy (or low energy) low-energy quasiparticles are absent

Breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory in a cuprate superconductor
The behaviour of electrons in solids is remarkably well described by Landau's
Fermi-liquid theory, which says that even though electrons in a metal interact
they can still be treated as well-defined fermions, called ``quasiparticles''.
At low temperature, the ability of quasiparticles to transport heat is strictly
given by their ability to transport charge, via a universal relation known as
the Wiedemann-Franz law, which no material in nature has been known to violate.
High-temperature superconductors have long been thought to fall outside the
realm of Fermi-liquid theory, as suggested by several anomalous properties, but
this has yet to be shown conclusively. Here we report on the first experimental
test of the Wiedemann-Franz law in a cuprate superconductor,
(Pr,Ce)CuO. Our study reveals a clear departure from the universal law
and provides compelling evidence for the breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory in

Long-term exposure to transportation noise and risk of incident stroke:A pooled study of nine scandinavian cohorts
BACKGROUND: Transportation noise is increasingly acknowledged as a cardiovascular risk factor, but the evidence base for an association with stroke is sparse. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association between transportation noise and stroke incidence in a large Scandinavian population. METHODS: We harmonized and pooled data from nine Scandinavian cohorts (seven Swedish, two Danish), totaling 135,951 participants. We identified residential address history and estimated road, railway, and aircraft noise for all addresses. Information on stroke incidence was acquired through link-age to national patient and mortality registries. We analyzed data using Cox proportional hazards models, including socioeconomic and lifestyle con-founders, and air pollution. RESULTS: During follow-up (median = 19:5 y), 11,056 stroke cases were identified. Road traffic noise (Lden ) was associated with risk of stroke, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.06 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03, 1.08] per 10-dB higher 5-y mean time-weighted exposure in analyses adjusted for indi-vidual-and area-level socioeconomic covariates. The association was approximately linear and persisted after adjustment for air pollution [particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2:5 lm (PM2:5 ) and NO2 ]. Stroke was associated with moderate levels of 5-y aircraft noise exposure (40–50 vs. ≤40 dB) (HR = 1:12; 95% CI: 0.99, 1.27), but not with higher exposure (≥50 dB, HR = 0:94; 95% CI: 0.79, 1.11). Railway noise was not associated with stroke. DISCUSSION: In this pooled study, road traffic noise was associated with a higher risk of stroke. This finding supports road traffic noise as an important cardiovascular risk factor that should be included when estimating the burden of disease due to traffic noise. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP8949
A distal region of the human TGM1 promoter is required for expression in transgenic mice and cultured keratinocytes
BACKGROUND: TGM1(transglutaminase 1) is an enzyme that crosslinks the cornified envelope of mature keratinocytes. Appropriate expression of the TGM1 gene is crucial for proper keratinocyte function as inactivating mutations lead to the debilitating skin disease, lamellar ichthyosis. TGM1 is also expressed in squamous metaplasia, a consequence in some epithelia of vitamin A deficiency or toxic insult that can lead to neoplasia. An understanding of the regulation of this gene in normal and abnormal differentiation states may contribute to better disease diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: In vivo requirements for expression of the TGM1 gene were studied by fusing various lengths of promoter DNA to a reporter and injecting the DNA into mouse embryos to generate transgenic animals. Expression of the reporter was ascertained by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Further delineation of a transcriptionally important distal region was determined by transfections of progressively shortened or mutated promoter DNA into cultured keratinocytes. RESULTS: In vivo analysis of a reporter transgene driven by the TGM1 promoter revealed that 1.6 kilobases, but not 1.1 kilobases, of DNA was sufficient to confer tissue-specific and cell layer-specific expression. This same region was responsible for reporter expression in tissues undergoing squamous metaplasia as a response to vitamin A deprivation. Mutation of a distal promoter AP1 site or proximal promoter CRE site, both identified as important transcriptional elements in transfection assays, did not prevent appropriate expression. Further searching for transcriptional elements using electrophoretic mobility shift (EMSA) and transfection assays in cultured keratinocytes identified two Sp1 elements in a transcriptionally active region between -1.6 and -1.4 kilobases. While mutation of either Sp1 site or the AP1 site singly had only a small effect, mutation of all three sites eliminated nearly all the transcriptional activity. CONCLUSIONS: A distal region of the TGM1 gene promoter, containing AP1 and Sp1 binding sites, is evolutionarily conserved and responsible for high level expression in transgenic mice and in transfected keratinocyte cultures
A critical appraisal of appendage disparity and homology in fishes
Fishes are both extremely diverse and morphologically disparate. Part of this disparity can be observed in the numerous possible fin configurations that may differ in terms of the number of fins as well as fin shapes, sizes and relative positions on the body. Here, we thoroughly review the major patterns of disparity in fin configurations for each major group of fishes and discuss how median and paired fin homologies have been interpreted over time. When taking into account the entire span of fish diversity, including both extant and fossil taxa, the disparity in fin morphologies greatly complicates inferring homologies for individual fins. Given the phylogenetic scope of this review, structural and topological criteria appear to be the most useful indicators of fin identity. We further suggest that it may be advantageous to consider some of these fin homologies as nested within the larger framework of homologous fin‐forming morphogenetic fields. We also discuss scenarios of appendage evolution and suggest that modularity may have played a key role in appendage disparification. Fin modules re‐expressed within the boundaries of fin‐forming fields could explain how some fins may have evolved numerous times independently in separate lineages (e.g., adipose fin), or how new fins may have evolved over time (e.g., anterior and posterior dorsal fins, pectoral and pelvic fins). Vitamin D Deficiency and Its Health Consequences in Africa
Africa is heterogeneous in latitude, geography, climate, food availability, religious and cultural practices, and skin pigmentation. It is expected, therefore, that prevalence of vitamin D deficiency varies widely, in line with influences on skin exposure to UVB sunshine. Furthermore, low calcium intakes and heavy burden of infectious disease common in many countries may increase vitamin D utilization and turnover. Studies of plasma 25OHD concentration indicate a spectrum from clinical deficiency to values at the high end of the physiological range; however, data are limited. Representative studies of status in different countries, using comparable analytical techniques, and of relationships between vitamin D status and risk of infectious and chronic diseases relevant to the African context are needed. Public health measures to secure vitamin D adequacy cannot encompass the whole continent and need to be developed locally
